Race 1: Toowoomba Cup Day 2nd June Class 1 H'cap – 1000m
Track temperature – 25 degrees Celsius
SHOW DIVA (N. Tomizawa) and PERFECT RAINBOW (M. Abe) were slow to begin.
After being crossed in the early stages, LAREDO (M. O’Brien) then raced very keenly for some distance.
Near the 400m, LAREDO, which was inclined to lay out, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MINI STYLE (K. Yoshida), which hung in.
After racing wide throughout, EQUALITY (T. Jeffries) weakened in the straight. T. Jeffries, rider of EQUALITY, was reminded of her obligations regarding use of the whip on horses out of contention.
Race 2: Happy 90th Eric Edwards Class 5 H'cap – 1200m
Track temperature – 24 degrees Celsius
Near the 400m, SEZWHO (N. Tomizawa) was badly crowded and DODGING EDDIE (M. O'Brien) clipped heels and checked when crowded for room between RODRIGEUZ (T. Jeffries), which shifted out slightly away from LITTLE PIN UP GIRL (R. Ride), and STARSTREAMED (A. Best), which was inclined to lay in slightly and then was turned in further when bumped on the hindquarters by DODGING EDDIE, which had received pressure from its inside. In the circumstances, stewards could not attribute blame to any one ride and no action was taken.
Following Race 2, trainer M. Webb approached stewards to report alleged comments made by jockey A. Best, rider of STARSTREAMED, after this race in the vicinity of the weighing room. Mr Webb requested licensed stablehands Mr R. Matthews and Mr A. Wallace be present to place on the record comments attributed to A. Best which they witnessed. After taking preliminary evidence, jockey Best admitted that some comments of a derogatory nature were made about Mr Webb however he denied using any expletives. Mr Webb therefore made application to the stewards to have jockey Best stood down from his engagement for him on BEADSWORTH in Race 6. After considering the circumstances, and concessions made by A. Best, stewards deemed it appropriate to replace A. Best as the rider of BEADSWORTH, and D. Robinson was substituted as the rider of that colt. Mr Webb undertook to compensate jockey Best with any winning percentage and riding fee. A. Best was subsequently reprimanded for the comments he made in the vicinity of the weighing room regarding Mr Webb.
Trainer M. Webb advised that SAVAGE, with the addition of blinkers tonight and the slight increase in distance, was able to cross to the lead. Mr Webb was somewhat surprised with the manner that SAVAGE was permitted to lead without pressure from other runners and was of the view that because it was able to set a favourable tempo without being pressured, these were telling factors in the horse being successful.
Race 3: Win News Toowoomba Class 3 Plate – 1625m
Track temperature – 21 degrees Celsius
In the early stages, DOBROS (S. Apthorpe) pulled very hard.
Making the first turn near the 1400m, SANDY’S DRAGON refused to settle and was allowed to shift out by its rider and stride forward to find cover.
After the 1000m, due mainly to the pace, TELLINTAIMZ (R. Ride) improved up inside the heels of GOLD RECORD (K. Yoshida) and was restrained.
Race 4: Palm Lake Maiden H'cap – 1625m
Track temperature – 19 degrees Celsius
NORTHERN CULTURE (T. Jeffries) was slow to begin.
In the early stages, both NORTHERN CULTURE and JAVA BAY (R. Goltz) raced keenly.
K. Yoshida, rider of SUNDAE DREAMIN’, was reprimanded for shifting out just prior to straightening, resulting in NORTHERN CULTURE having to be steadied.
For a major part of the race, JAVA BAY hung in badly and on several occasions struck the running rail. A post race veterinary examination of JAVA BAY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stable representative Mr N. Auld, representing trainer T. Gollan, explained that QUICKANDTHEDEAD at 2 previous starts at Ipswich that both were on rain-affected tracks. He said that at its last start, although beaten a significant margin, the horse was hampered at the start and then after racing with cover on the slow track, the rider was of the view that QUCKANDTHEDEAD never handled the soft surface. He added that QUICKANDTHEDEAD has only had one previous start on the cushion surface where it finished second, and because Mr Gollan had been pleased that the horse’s condition had improved since its last start at Ipswich some 3 weeks ago, he was of the view that the cushion surface tonight would see a somewhat improved performance.
Race 5: Ray White Toowoomba Range Class 2 H'cap – 1200m
Track temperature – 19 degrees Celsius
After arriving at the start, A. Best was dislodged from TEGIC, which galloped a short distance before being recaptured at the 1600m chute. It was returned to the start, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race. Also after arriving at the start, DANISH LASS threw its head down, dislodging R. Ride, who was winded slightly. Apprentice Ride was examined by the club’s medical officers at the start and cleared to fulfil her engagement.
When questioned regarding the performance of DANISH LASS, in the presence of her master, Mr K. Kemp, R. Ride explained that trainer Mr M. Nolen advised her prior to tonight’s race that the mare is somewhat difficult to ride and for this reason he engaged her to ride it in trackwork leading up to tonight’s race. She added that DANISH LASS was fractious before the start and difficult in the barriers. Then when the gates were released it shifted in very abruptly, resulting in her almost becoming dislodged. R. Ride said that after regaining her balance, DANISH LASS threw its head up on a number of occasions in the early stages and refused to stride out. She said she elected to allow the mare to find its feet and gradually made up the ground lost at the start, however when the pace quickened from the 500m DANISH LASS was unable to make up lost ground and finished the race off only moderately. R. Ride said that immediately on pulling up she became aware of muscle soreness in the region of her ribs and for this reason sought assistance in dismounting on returning to scale. Apprentice Ride was examined by medical officers and stood down from her remaining engagement on EARHART in Race 6. Trainer M. Nolan will be advised that the mare will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official jumpout before being permitted to start again and stewards will suggest that it may be in the bests interests to engage the services of a senior rider for the mare in the near future.
As R. Ride (DANISH LASS) was experiencing extreme discomfort on return to scale and was unable to dismount without assistance, acting under AR142, correct weight was declared in her absence.
When racing 3 wide without cover in the early and middle stages, LORD LION (T. Wolfgram) raced keenly.
Race 6: City Pro Computers QTIS 3yo Maiden H'cap 1050m
Track temperature – 19 degrees Celsius
Trainer G. Richardson approached stewards and sought permission, which was granted, for apprentice M. O’Brien not to carry a whip on JUST WATCHER. Mr Richardson advised that the filly had shown in the past a dislike for being slapped with the whip.
After being mounted in the mounting yard, jockey W. O’Connell was dislodged and after entering the track was dislodged on a couple of occasions and refused to go to the start. YOULGETEM was subsequently declared a late at 8.10pm. All monies invested on YOULGETEM were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.
0 cent in the dollar for the Win #7
7 cents in the dollar for place of winner #7
7 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #8
6 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #2
YOULGETEM will be required to parade and perform satisfactorily before starting again.
JOUR GOLD ROSE (N. Tomizawa) and BLAZING ASALT (J. Letherby) were slow to begin. BLAZING ASALT then tailed out throughout.
Making the first turn, OUR GOLD ROSE (N. Tomizawa), which was racing keenly, shifted out.
After the race, trainer G. Blades reported that BLAZING ASALT had lacerations to the near hind hip and hind leg. Mr Blades undertook to immediately spell the colt. On this assurance no action was taken against the somewhat poor performance of BLAZING ASALT.
Race 7: Toowoomba Trophy Centre Maiden Plate – 850m
Track temperature – degrees Celsius
LET’S BREAKAWAY (W. O'Connell) and OUTBACK FLASH (N. Evans) were slow to begin.
Near the 600m, STRONGHOLD (D. Robinson) was checked and shifted out abruptly when crowded by DAYTIME HERO (A. Merritt), which shifted in when hanging in badly away from INSOLENT (A. Best).
