Race 1: CHANNEL 7 TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M

Track temperature – 14 degrees Celsius

Stewards accepted W. O’Connell’s explanation for his inability to fulfil his engagement on BLUGIRL. J. Letherby was substituted as the rider of that filly.

CANID (T. Jeffries) was slow to begin.

RUBYRICHBOY (S. Bogenhuber) shifted in at the start and bumped FLETCHER CREEK (S. Shield).

SECTION SIX (J. Kehoe) bounded at the start.

RUBYRICHBOY hung in in the early and middle stages.

DOUBLE COST (L. Tarrant) hung out throughout.

Upon straightening, DOUBLE COST was inconvenienced when it improved into a narrow run inside SECTION SIX which was weakening.

Race 2: CHARLTON TYRE SERVICE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1300M

Track temperature – 12 degrees Celsius

RULING HEART (J. Letherby) stood flat-footed and missed the start considerably. Trainer J. Smith was advised that a warning would be placed against the gelding.

MATTY’S SEQUEL (K. Yoshida) began awkwardly and then shifted out and made heavy contact with ESTHER CAROLINE (N. Tomizawa).

After the 1100m RULING HEART commenced to race very keenly and refused to settle and for this reason its rider had no option but to allow it to shift out and stride forward.

Jockey N. Tomizawa (ESTHER CAROLINE) explained, as was reported at its last start, that on that occasion the horse was sitting back in its gate at the start and consequently got well back in the race. He said the cushion surface at that venue is significantly different to the cushion surface here and that after the horse missed the start, it totally resented the kickback. He added that tonight with the increase in distance and a good jump at the start, ESTHER CAROLINE was able to race in a forward position three wide without receiving any kickback and this was the significant difference in the horse’s performance this evening.

Race 3: MAINZ DEVELOPMENTS QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

Track temperature – 12 degrees Celsius

ANIMOSITY was a late scratching at 4.30 pm for veterinary reasons.

BETA THAN ALPHA (W. O'Connell) was slow to begin.

After being crossed near the 1100m ANOTHER DANEHILL (S. Shield) commenced to race keenly, shifted out and bumped with HANDFUL OF SILVER (N. Evans) on a few occasions.

The performance of ANOTHER DANEHILL, which tailed out in the straight, was considered unacceptable. Trainer D. Jones advised the Stewards that it was now the intention to retire the gelding. Mr Jones was nonetheless advised that the gelding would be barred from competing at TAB meetings until it can establish more competitive form.

After the race, trainer L Wheeler reported that HANDFUL OF SILVER had twisted its near hind plate and had sustained a slight puncture wound.

Race 4: PALM LAKE RESORT CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1625M

Track temperature – 11 degrees Celsius

BIG WHEELS (S. Bogenhuber) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hind quarters of MAGIC TWIST (L. Tarrant).

ROYAL SEAL (J. Letherby) and STRONGHOLD (M. O'Brien) raced keenly in the early stages.

After the 1000m BIG WHEELS endeavoured to shift out from behind STRONGHOLD and made contact with CANADIAN HUSSEY (N. Tomizawa).

From the 600m MAGIC TWIST hung out.

Rounding the home turn IDLE MINDS (R. Goltz) hung in.

L. Tarrant (MAGIC TWIST) reported that his mount got its tongue over the bit during running.

Race 5: RAY WHITE TOOWOOMBA RANGE BM75 H'CAP – 1625M

Track temperature – 11 degrees Celsius

Near the 1500m PRIMED (M. O'Brien), which was racing keenly, was restrained. RODRIGEUZ (S. Bogenhuber), which was following, was steadied off that horse’s heels as a consequence.

EXTREME MOVER (T. Jeffries), which was caught three wide in the early stages and raced very keenly, was allowed to stride forward by its rider.

When questioned, apprentice T. Jeffries (EXTREME MOVER) stated that she was instructed to try to find cover if possible, however from the awkward draw she was unsure whether this would eventuate. She said shortly after the start she was hopeful that she would be able to maintain the position behind SECOND GO (J. Letherby), however when that horse took hold, EXTREME MOVER commenced to race very keenly and she was unable to restrain the horse and as a consequence it improved to the outside of SECOND GO. She added that because of the manner in which EXTREME MOVER was racing and being wide without cover, she elected to allow it to stride forward after the 1300m in the hope of racing outside VIVAHEART (C. Small). She said when she commenced to do this, TELLINTAIMZ (N. Tomizawa) shifted away from the rail, which then left her racing three wide. She said because of this she persisted with her intention to stride to the position outside the lead, however EXTREME MOVER continued to race very keenly up to the 800m when she was unable to restrain it. She said the horse then travelled fairly well, however in the straight when placed under pressure it failed to respond and weakened over the concluding stages. Ms Jeffries conceded that the horse was ridden in a manner contrary to its usual racing pattern, however in her opinion she believed that occurred as a result of her being a victim of circumstances.

Trainer S. Hamilton was afforded the opportunity to explain the improved performance of SECOND GO. Mr Hamilton stated that the horse’s previous start was over 2000m on a rain-affected track and in that race he was of the view that the horse did not run out the distance. He said the start prior to that at Toowoomba, the horse was beaten only 4 lengths where there was little pace on and which developed into a sprint home. He added that the horse had previously raced in blinkers, however it had shown a tendency to race keenly. Since then he has had recommendations to reapply the blinkers, which he did for today’s race, and he was of the view that this had also a beneficial effect on the horse’s improved performance. Mr Hamilton stated that the horse may now only have one more run before he intends sending it for a spell. His explanation was accepted.

Race 6: CRACKER PRINT AND PAPER BM80 H'CAP – 1200M

Track temperature – 10 degrees Celsius

STARSTREAMED (A. Best) had to be resaddled behind the barriers. STARSTREAMED then missed the start. A. Best reported that in the early stages of the race the saddle again shifted back on STARSTREAMED.
