STEWARDS REPORT

WANDOAN DIGGERS RACE CLUB – 23 MARCH 2013

WEATHER - FINE TRACK RATING – GOOD 3 RAIL - TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – S. Fletcher
Stewards – T. Preston, A. Stephens
Clerk of Scales – P. Erbacher
Judge – P. Webster
Veterinarian – Dr H. Oliver
Swab attendants – Dr H. Oliver
Starter – C. James

Race 1: Landmark Wandoan/Jundah Contracting Class 4 Handicap 1000m

KEEP UP THE ATTACK (S. Apthorpe) shifted out at the start and bumped BUILT TOUGH (T. Serjeant).

Leaving the 800m NINEDAYFORTNIGHT (R. Faehr) hung out forcing BUILT TOUGH wider on the track.

R. Faehr reported that NINEDAYFORTNIGHT hung out throughout the race and proved difficult to ride. Trainer J. Devine was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of NINEDAYFORTNIGHT.

Race 2: Black Toyota/Dell James Patron Class B Handicap 1000m

Correct weight was delayed when, on returning to scale, S. Apthorpe the rider of BUTCH, which was placed second, was found to have weighed in, in excess of half a kilogram under its allotted weight. After taking evidence from S. Apthorpe, trainer B. Hudson and the Clerk of Scales, stewards disqualified BUTCH from the race under the provisions of AR143. Stewards declared correct weight on the amended placing’s of: 1st – BOXSA, 2nd – JET LARGO, 3rd - CRACK A SMILE, 4th- BEFORE A PROMISE. At a subsequent inquiry, trainer B. Hudson was found guilty of a charge under AR143(b) in that as the trainer of BUTCH, he negligently failed to properly affix the lead bag to that runner which was part of that geldings gear to be carried, resulting in BUTCH carrying less weight than it should carry. B. Hudson was fined the sum of $500.

Apprentice N. Ogura was reprimanded for failing to claim his full allowance on DOOVALACKIE.

GOLD RECORD (R. Ride) and BOXSA (D. Rewald) were tightened for room at the start between BUTCH (S. Apthorpe) and RESONATING (J. Kehoe) which after beginning awkwardly shifted out.

BOXSA lost both fore plates in running.

Stewards issued a charge against Apprentice L. Tilley (DR HOUSE) for failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race. After considering further evidence including the official race patrol footage, stewards could not be satisfied that L. Tilley had failed to ride his mount out and therefore did not sustain the charge.

Race 3: Mike Jones Earthmoving Class 1 Handicap 1200m

SHANNON’S COMMAND (N. Ogura) began awkwardly.

Near the 1100m DANZ ART (L. Tilley) shifted out and bumped FORTUITOUS BLADE (J. Kehoe).

CHILLDOWN (T. Serjeant) over raced in the early stages.

SHANNON’S COMMAND laid in under pressure in the straight.

Race 4: John Mullins Memorial Open Handicap 1200m

Stewards permitted G. Geran to ride JACK ‘N’ ME a half a kilogram over the gelding’s handicap weight.

Near the 800m LIGER (S. Apthorpe) laid out and was steadied from the heels of REGAL PRINCE (N. Ogura).

RATTLE ‘N’ RUN was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and was eased approaching the 100m when STEALING KISSES (T. Serjeant) shifted in slightly.

Race 5: Western Downs Regional Council QTIS Maiden Handicap 1100m

ANGIE’S DIARY (R. Ride) and LIQUID NITROGEN (N. Ogura) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 400m NO MORE DOUBTS (T. Serjeant) was retired from the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed NO MORE DOUBTS to be lame in the near fore and off hind leg. Trainer R. Cole was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the gelding before being permitted to race again, Mr Cole indicated that it would be his intention to retire the gelding.

Stewards sought an explanation from Apprentice N. Ogura the rider of LIQUID NITROGEN, regarding the horse racing a significant distance behind the main body of the field and the overall performance of the filly. N. Ogura stated that the filly normally races forward, however after being fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and raced in a rearward position. He added that LIQUID NITROGEN resented the kick back from the track in the early stages and was reluctant to stretch out and then hung out leaving the 800m which resulted in his mount losing ground. He further added that his mount finished the race off fairly. Stewards noted the explanation.
