Race 1: RM Williams Maiden Plate 800m

PUNK STAR (B. Powell) shifted out at the start and bumped LADY’S GATHERING (R. Johnston-Bell).

SIERRA QUEEN (N. Ogura) stood flat footed and then shifted out abruptly losing ground.

Near the 600m CONSUMPTION (B. Ainsworth) shifted out and bumped SUCCESSIVE which shifted wider on the track.

FIRST RUMBLE (D. McIntosh) hung out rounding the home turn and then continued to shift out under pressure in the straight.

SUCCESSIVE and LADY’S GATHERING hung out rounding the home turn.

Near the 200m CONSUMPTION (B. Ainsworth) shifted out resulting in JUST AVERAGE (A. Best) being momentarily steadied. B. Ainsworth was advised exercise care.

J. Kehoe (SUCCESSIVE) was fined $300 for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.


Race 2: Warwick Hotel Class B Handicap 1100m

Stewards acceded to a request from trainer G. Blades for RUBI OF THE DESERT to race bare behind after the mare shifted a plate and the horse being unable to be re-plated.
The start of this race was delayed when CLUELESS got away from a barrier attendant and cantered up into the 1500m chute before being recaptured. A veterinary examination of CLUELESS passed the gelding to race.

Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of SHADOWY PAST at 1.38 pm on veterinary advice after that runner reared in the barriers and became cast.

Stewards ordered that all monies invested on SHADOWY PAST be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 1.38pm:

0 cents in the dollar for the Win #10
15 cents in the dollar for place of winner #10
13 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #11
8 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #2


Trainer P. Moncrieff was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of SHADOWY PAST and that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for the gelding before racing again.

DOG TIRED (N. Ogura) shifted in at the start and made contact with CLUELESS.

MANFRED THE MAN (R. Goltz) jumped in the air at the start and lost ground.

DANCING AL (S. Payne) began awkwardly and lost ground.

MASSIE BELLE (B. Powell) overraced in the early stages.

Approaching the 800m REPRESENT (D. McIntosh) shifted out forcing DRAGON BAY (T. Banks) wider on the track.

REPRESENT race wide for the majority of the event.

DRAGON BAY made the home turn extremely wide and then hung in under pressure in the straight.

Jockey D. McIntosh was stood down due to illness after this race and replaced as per the stewards summary.

Stewards questioned rider A. Best and trainer B. Sturgess regarding PERANTO leading today, which in contrast to the horses recent racing pattern and the improved performance of that horse. A. Best stated that the instructions were to be positive from the barriers, however it was not his intention to lead. B. Sturgess confirmed the instructions, stating the horse can begin well and that he believed the horse would be positioned just behind the leaders with cover. He added with regards to today’s performance, that PERANTO had not appreciated the firm track and anticlockwise way of going recently at Taroom. He further added that the horse had worked well leading up to today’s race and he was hopeful of an improved performance. Stewards in noting the explanations, reminded Mr Sturgess of his obligations to advise stewards of any intention to the change in riding tactics.


Race 3: Gross Wholesale Meats QTIS Maiden Handicap1200m

Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of AS GOOD AS ME MUM (B. Abbey) at 2.12 pm after that runner commenced to buck after leaving the enclosure, dislodged the rider and then galloped a significant distance before being recaptured.

Stewards ordered that all monies invested on AS GOOD AS ME MUM be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 2.12 pm:

0 cents in the dollar for the Win #10
3 cents in the dollar for place of winner #10
2 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
2 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #8


Trainer K. Kelly was advised that As Good As Me Mum will be required to officially trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again.

HORNIBROOK began awkwardly.

SHIMBOOK (J. Kehoe) began awkwardly and lost ground.

FELTON PHANTOM (B. Stower) and UPTOWN ROCK (A. Best) made heavy contact on jumping away.

Shortly after the start COURT COUTURE (T. Tincknell), SPECTACULAR ROCK (A. Merritt) and RINGSFIELD (G. Killen) were all tightened for room and became unbalanced between BLUMAC (R. Goltz) and UPTOWN ROCK which shifted out after bumping heavily with another runner. In this incident SPECTACULAR ROCK was checked and lost ground.

COURT COUTURE over raced in the early stages.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the reason for MONSTER TRUCK (B. Ainsworth) and RINGSFIELD (G. Killen) falling near the 850m. Evidence was taken from G. Geran (LIVINGSTON), A. Best (UPTOWN ROCK) and apprentice R. Johnston-Bell (TIERRO). The inquiry was adjourned until a time and date to allow B. Ainsworth to be present to provide evidence. In this incident FELTON PHANTOM, SPECTACULAR ROCK, REAL DYNAMITE, BLUMAC and OUTBACK IMAGE were all checked to varying degrees to avoid the fallen riders and horses. RINGSFIELD fell when unable to avoid the fallen MONSTER TRUCK. Apprentice B. Ainsworth was transported to the Warwick Hospital for further observations.

HORNIBROOK (F. Jervis) raced greenly in the home straight.

G. Geran (LIVINGSTON) was fined $200 for weighing in in excess of a half a kilogram over his declared weight.

G. Killen was observed by the attending Ambulance officers and cleared to fulfil the remainder of his engagements.


Race 4: Warwick Veterinary Clinic Benchmark 65 Handicap 1200m

VICE OR VIRTUE (I. French) and STEPHEN GOT EVEN (G. Geran) were slow to begin.

VICE OR VIRTUE which raced extremely wide rounding the first turn continued to race wide without cover for the remainder of the event.

R. Goltz (KATIKA) reported his mount hung out throughout the race. Trainer K. Kelly will be advised that a warning will be placed on the racing manners of KATIKA for hanging out.

Approaching the 600m GRAPPA made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced and lost ground.

Near the 600m VAIN DAZZER (R. Payne) improved onto the heels of CHEQUE FOR FREDOM (S. Fawke) and shifted out wider on the track.

VICE OR VIRTUE shifted out under pressure in the home straight.


Race 5: Warwick Credit Union Cup Open Handicap 1500m

HAKAKUNA (S. Fawke) was slow to begin.

ROCKLEA RAIDER raced wide for the majority of the event.

LADY AGULAS (R. Johnston-Bell) was awkwardly placed on the heels of FLOOD HERO (S. Payne) approaching the home turn.

Stewards questioned apprentice R. Johnston-Bell regarding his riding of LADY AGULAS in the home straight, of concern was his vigour at that point of the race. He stated that upon entering the home straight he applied pressure to his mount by way of hands and heels and that his riding was consistent with his normal riding style and that he had ridden to the best of his ability. He added that the trainer had informed him that LADY AGULAS finishes its races off well and felt that the mare responded well to his riding and made ground in the straight. C. Williamson, master of apprentice Johnston-Bell, stated that he has encouraged his apprentice not to use his whip up to this stage of his riding career until he can use it properly, so that he remains balanced in his riding of his mounts. Stewards in considering the evidence noted apprentice Johnston-Bell’s relative inexperience over the short time that he had been race riding and accepted the explanation.


Race 6: Fraser’s Livestock Transport Warwick Newmarket Open Handicap 1100m

Trainer D. Baker was fined $100 for a late gear change of blinkers on for EASY GAME. A broadcast was made regarding this change.

EASY GAME (R. Goltz) was tightened for room at the start between BELLANTINA (G. Geran) and WESTERN SHADOW (F. Jervis) which shifted out.

NEAR the 800m EASY GAME was eased when tightened for room between YEAR OF THE TIGER (A. Merritt) and BELLANTINA when both runners shifted slightly.

DALINGI (J. Kehoe) raced wide for the majority of the event.

BELLANTINA made the home turn wide forcing EASY GAME wider on the track.

Leaving the 100m SPURTASTIC (R. Johnston-Bell) shifted out abruptly and made heavy contact with MOUNT KOSCIUSCO (S. Payne) resulting in both runners becoming unbalanced.

A post-race veterinary examination of DALINGI which weakened from the 400m and finished a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

G. Geran the rider of BELLANTINA which performed below market expectations stated that it was the intention to go forward today however his mount did not begin well and raced back in the field. He added the mare was very agitated in the barriers today and felt the warm conditions and the 61kg impost may have had an effect on today’s performance. Stewards will interview trainer L. Clarke with regards to the performance.
