Race 1: GOLD COAST FAMILY POOLS QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H'CAP - 800M

Trainer T. Sears was fined $200 for the late declarations of riders in Race 1 (DESERT GAMBLER - B. Evans) and Race 7 (WARP NINE - N. Yamada).

FAN THE FIRE reared over whilst parading and dislodged J. Letherby. As J. Letherby required ambulance attention and was unfit to ride the filly, FAN THE FIRE was declared a late scratching at 12.50 pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on FAN THE FIRE be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

22 cents in the dollar for the Win #2
20 cents in the dollar for place of winner #2
24 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5

As J. Letherby was transported to hospital, the start of this race was further delayed awaiting the arrival of a replacement ambulance. Riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Trainer E. Hayes' stable representative was advised that FAN THE FIRE must perform satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next start.

SOMERSET DAWN (S. Fawke) stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer J. Curtain was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse's barrier manners.

MISS BAM (N. Evans) was slow to begin.

Near the 600m ROSE RAKU (W. O'Connell) laid out and in doing so forced IBELIEVEICANFLY (S. Drake) wider on the track.

Near the 500m IBELIEVEICANFLY shifted in and momentarily crowded DESERT GAMBLER (B. Evans) for room.

At the 400m SOMERSET DAWN shifted in and made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.

On entering the home straight DESERT GAMBLER shifted in abruptly when pressured with the whip.

Over the concluding stages IBELIEVEICANFLY raced greenly, proving difficult to ride out.

B. Evans (DESERT GAMBLER) was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish of the race.

Race 2: ISABELLA @ PSP VIDEO MAIDEN H'CAP - 1350M

As a result of the considerable delay to the start of Race 1, the start of this race was rescheduled from 1.29 pm to 1.35 pm.

On jumping away OAK FIRE (A. Taylor) and GARNETS (G. Geran) were tightened for room between SHINZIGZAG (N. Evans) and STRIKING (D. McIntosh).

PAT'S SECRET (M. O' Brien) began awkwardly and shifted out, losing ground.

Near the 1100m SHINZIGZAG commenced to overrace and when being eased from the heels of OUR JUDICIARY (K. Yoshida) shifted out abruptly, forcing GARNETS wider on the track. GARNETS was then obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.

Near the 700m PICALOVA (S. Fawke) shifted in, resulting in OUR JUDICIARY having to be steadied. Apprentice S. Fawke was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground.

Near the 150m OAK FIRE shifted out, resulting in OUR JUDICIARY having to be momentarily steadied. A. Taylor (OAK FIRE) was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground.

Near the 100m OAK FIRE had to be eased from the heels of POET LAUREATE (W. O'Connell), which shifted out under pressure. W. O'Connell was severely reprimanded and advised that he would be required to make greater efforts to stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.

Stewards questioned A. Taylor, the rider of OAK FIRE, with regards to her shifting out to obtain clear running near the 200m when there appeared to be a run between STRIKING (D. McIntosh) and POET LAUREATE at that stage. A. Taylor stated that STRIKING, which was forward of her, was shifting ground leading up to this point and felt that her best option was to shift around the heels of POET LAUREATE. Stewards noted the explanation.

OAK FIRE bled from both nostrils during the event. Trainer K. Monckton was advised that OAK FIRE would be ineligible to start for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing the mare must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward.

N. Evans, the rider of SHINZIGZAG, which performed below market expectations, stated that he obtained cover in the early stages but his mount overraced and never travelled comfortably during the event. He added that he placed SHINZIGZAG under pressure from the 500m however his mount did not quicken and in his opinion was disappointing.

Race 3: HYNES NEWSAGENCY/WARWICK REAL ESTATE MAIDEN H'CAP - 1100M

NOTHING BUT GLORY (S. Apthorpe) was slow to begin and lost ground.

CROWN THE BOSS (I. Coombes), which began awkwardly, making contact with the barrier gate, was then tightened for room a short distance later between OUTBACK LASS (N. Yamada) and OKINAWA (W. O'Connell), which shifted in.

EXCEEDINGLY BAY (M. O'Brien) raced wide throughout.

Near the 850m TARNISHED REMARC (C. Kearney) hung out despite the efforts of its rider, making contact with OUT BACK LASS, which in turn shifted out making contact with NORTHERN CULTURE (A. Fancourt), which in turn was forced out and as a result clipped the heels of OUR BLACK OPALS (G. Geran) and blundered. After taking evidence from all riders involved, whilst the incident was of some significance, stewards found that there was no rider at fault. As a result, HOW SWEET (R. Ride) which was following, shifted out and away from the heels of NORTHERN CULTURE (A. Fancourt), and in doing so forced TEMPER TRAP (S. Fawke) and DRINKINSILVERS (N. Evans) wider on the track.

Approaching the 600m CROWN THE BOSS improved up on to the heels of TARNISHED REMARC (C. Kearney) and was continually restrained from that runner's heels for a short distance.

Rounding the home turn, TARNISHED REMARC shifted out slightly and was steadied from the heels of HOW SWEET, which shifted in marginally.

Trainer Bill Brown was fined $100 for racing NOTHING BUT GLORY (S. Apthorpe) in blinkers when he had not notified the addition of blinkers to that horse's gear. Stewards advised Mr Brown that NOTHING BUT GLORY, which after being slow to begin and trailed the main body of the field by a significant distance before running home fairly in the home straight, would incur a warning against the horse's competitiveness today.

Race 4: K & R PLUMBING SUPPLIES CLASS 1 H'CAP - 1100M

Trainer T. Webb was fined $100 for the late declaration of B. Appo as the rider of CAZNOT.

The start of this race was delayed due to an interstate race in progress.

YOUSHKA (C. Kearney) shifted out at the start and made contact with MISS CARTER (B. Newport). As a result, MISS CARTER lost ground.

CAZNOT (B. Appo) jumped away awkwardly, losing ground.

G. Geran, the rider of BOOT SHAKER, was issued with a charge of careless riding in that near the 850m he directed his mount inwards on an acute angle when insufficiently clear of TIPSY TYCOON (N. Evans), which was dictated inwards, which forced HOT AUNTY (R. Ride) inwards, tightening the running of GENERAL ASCOT (N. Yamada), resulting in GENERAL ASCOT having to be checked and losing its rightful running. After reviewing the patrol footage and considering the submissions made by jockey Geran as well as the evidence tendered by other riders, stewards were not comfortably satisfied that BOOT SHAKER was insufficiently clear and therefore in a position to dictate the running of TIPSY TYCOON inwards and accordingly did not sustain the charge issued. As a result of this incident, MYSTIC MEDUSA (S. Apthorpe), which was following, had to be checked from the heels of GENERAL ASCOT and shifted out tightening YOUSHKA, which had to be checked as a consequence.

Near the 700m GENERAL ASCOT, which was overracing, improved up on to the heels of RIP RIP WOODCHIP (S. Drake) and had to be restrained. CAZNOT, which was following, had to be checked off the heels of GENERAL ASCOT.

S. Drake (RIP RIP WOODCHIP) dropped her whip near the 200m.

Bradley Appo, the rider of CAZNOT, was fined $100 for using the whip in a forehand manner on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.

GENERAL ASCOT lost its off fore plate in running.

Trainer G. Cornish will be interviewed with regards to the seemingly improved performance of RIP RIP WOODCHIP and the reasons for him not tendering a letter of authority.

Stewards questioned apprentice B. Newport with regards to the performance of MISS CARTER, which performed below market expectations. B. Newport stated that after being slow to begin he was forced to pressure his mount throughout the event and that the horse never travelled comfortably at any stage. He added that the horse however did improve from the 600m and finished the race off fairly.

Race 5: STEEL'S BAKERY & CAFE CLASS 4 H'CAP - 1100M

REALEE (C. Kearney) lost ground at the start when tightened for room between MONDUKE (N. Evans) and ROBERT'S COMMAND (M. O'Brien), both of which shifted ground.

Near the 700m MANCHEBO (G. Geran) improved up on to the heels of FEISTY LADY (A. Fancourt) and had to be checked, and a short distance later shifted out forcing BJORN (I. Coombes) wider on the track. Shortly after, DIAMOND HEIST (R. Ride) shifted out, taking ROBERT'S COMMAND wider on the track. ROBERT'S COMMAND was then forced to race wide for the remainder of the event.

Approaching the winning post, DAILY PLANET (S. Fawke) shifted in and away from DIAMOND HEIST, making contact with FALONLEAH (K. Yoshida) which, when contacted, shifted in and had to be steadied from the heels of ONE OUTED (S. Apthorpe).

M. O’Brien, the rider of ROBERT’S COMMAND, reported that her instructions were not to bustle the horse out of the barriers and that when riding forward in the early stages she was unable to clear the runners to her inside and was forced to race wide throughout. She added that as a result of racing wide ROBERT’S COMMAND weakened in the home straight.

Race 6: HOPE'S BODY REPAIRS/LANG&WALKER/RAY LYONS MEM. CQ SHOWCASE BM 79 H'CAP - 1500M

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer R. Lipp for the late declaration of I. Coombes as the rider of SINGLE IN LONDON.

TRICKIN (S. Fawke) raced keenly in the early stages.

OPEN HEART (B. Powell) raced wide for the majority of the event.

Once placed under pressure in the home straight, EXTREME MOVER (M. O'Brien) was inclined to lay in, requiring the rider to stop riding with the whip over the concluding stages.

S. Fawke reported that TRICKIN travelled well behind the leader however was under pressure when the eventual winner TO THE NORTH quickened near the 700m. He added that when placed under pressure TRICKIN ran home only fairly.

When asked to comment on the performance of JACK 'N' ME, jockey G. Geran stated that from the wide barrier he rode the horse with cover, which was consistent with the gelding's normal racing pattern. He added that his mount travelled well throughout, however when placed under pressure from the 600m his mount failed to run on as expected and in his opinion felt that JACK 'N' ME had come to the end of its preparation. Trainer M. Goodwin confirmed his disappointment in the performance and advised that the horse would be sent for an immediate spell.

RACE 7: BRIAN BUNCH PLUMBING CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1350M

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Overell for the late declaration of S. Drake as the rider of PUTAPAVONIT.

Correct weight was delayed to enable S. Drake, the rider of 4th placegetter PUTAPAVONIT, to view the stewards' patrol footage to ascertain whether she had grounds to lodge an objection against 3rd placegetter HANDFUL OF SILVER (N. Evans) over the concluding stages. After viewing the video, jockey Drake indicated that she did not wish to lodge an objection and correct weight was declared on the Judge's placings.

TURIFF (B. Evans) began awkwardly.

SNIP 'N' SNORT (S. Apthorpe) stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground.

MEDDLESOME (M. O'Brien) was slow to begin.

NEAR the 850m PUTAPAVONIT (S. Drake) improved up onto the heels of HANDFUL OF SILVER (N. Evans) and was checked by the rider.

Leaving the 1100m HANDFUL OF SILVER (N. Evans), which was overracing, shifted out slightly and had to be steadied from the heels of TURIFF.

Approaching the finishing line PUTAPAVONIT was steadied to avoid the heels of HANDFUL OF SILVER, which shifted out under pressure.

A post-race veterinary examination of MASSIE BELLE (B. Powell), which was retired from the race on entering the home straight, revealed that the horse had sustained an injury to the off foreleg and was lame. Trainer M. Hemmings was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for MASSIE BELLE prior to the mare being permitted to race again.

Stewards questioned jockey B. Evans and trainer B. Birch with regards to TURIFF leading in this event, which was in contrast to its most recent race starts. B. Evans stated that his instructions were to ride the horse where comfortable, however he was mindful that the horse had begun slowly at its most recent start and urged his mount forward from the start. He added that the horse obtained the lead without being pressured and he maintained the advantage that it had obtained. B. Birch confirmed the instructions that the horse can be slow to begin and to ride the horse forward and obtain a position where comfortable. He added that he had instructed the rider at its most recent start to ride forward, however the horse was tightened for room at the start and was forced to race back in the field. In all the circumstances, stewards noted the explanations.
