Race 1: Club Hotel Benchmark 65 Handicap 1400m

QUECHUA (B. Powell) stood flat footed at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer W. Baker was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of QUECHUA.

When the pace of the race eased near the 1100m, BRADY ‘N’ ME (M. McGillivray) improved onto the heels of IDAHLIA (E. Ljung) and when being restrained, shifted in abruptly and hampered GRAIN TRADER (J. Letherby). BRADY ‘N’ ME then overraced until leaving the 900m.

SUPERCHEAP (T. Banks) and IDAHLIA raced wide throughout.

SUPERCHEAP hung out from the 400m until entering the home straight.

IDAHLIA hung out rounding the home turn and upon entering the home straight and in doing so proved difficult to ride.

M. McGillivray the rider of BRADY ‘N’ ME reported at scale that his mount felt sore in the off fore leg. A post-race veterinary examination of BRADY ‘N’ ME revealed some swelling around the off fore seasamoidian ligaments but was not lame.


Race 2: Boodles Concrete Maiden Handicap 1200m

WAKE UP WALLY (J. Letherby) was slow to begin and muster speed.

MORE OF THE ZAIM (S. Bayliss) was slow to begin.

Leaving the 1100m OH GOLLY (W. O’Connell) shifted in acutely before being corrected resulting in EIGHT MATCH WINNER shifting in abruptly away from that runner and bumping GLORY ME (R. Payne) which shifted in across the heels of WINNING LEGEND (B. Powell) and when steadied, lost ground. W. O’Connell was severely reprimanded in this incident.

When interviewed regarding the performance of WAKE UP WALLY, jockey J. Letherby stated that his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage and failed to respond to his riding. He added that in his opinion the horse would benefit with a spell from racing. Trainer R. Hilton advised that in light of today’s performance he would send WAKE UP WALLY for an immediate spell.

Stewards questioned Apprentice R. Payne regarding the tactics adopted on GLORY ME. Of concern to stewards was the reason for GLORY ME losing ground from the 900m and racing a significant distance behind the main body of the field and R. Payne’s riding from rounding the home turn. She stated that after receiving interference early in the race that her mount came off the bit and lost ground. She added that she pressured her mount with the whip to improve leaving the 900m, however GLORY ME got its head up when going through the kick back and continued to lose ground despite her efforts. She added that she was able to get the mare back on the bit near the 600m and that GLORY ME responded to her riding and ran on well from that point. R. Payne went on to say that she rode GLORY ME hands and heels in her normal fashion rounding the home turn but did become momentarily unbalanced near the 200m when apply the whip in a backhand manner. Trainer’s representative Mr M. Patterson agreed with R. Payne’s comments that the mare had lost momentum in the early stages and had resented the kickback from the track. He added that he would pass onto trainer M. Goodwin the comments of R. Payne regarding the performance and have him report to stewards any abnormalities that may come to his attention regarding the performance. Stewards noted the explanations tendered.


Race 3: LCR Class B Handicap 1200m

At the start, CALL A TRUCE was tightened for room between LOTZA MATEZ (M. Abe) and BUDDY’S CROWN (W. O’Connell) which blundered on jumping and shifted in. As a result CALL A TRUCE lost ground.

PICALOVA (E. Ljung) was slow to begin.

WRITTENINTHERAIN (R. Payne) and ALUCARD raced wide throughout.

WRITTENINTHERAIN laid in under pressure in the home straight.

When questioned regarding the below market performance of PICALOVA, Apprentice E. Ljung stated that after being slow to begin she positioned her mount with cover. She added however that PICALOVA resented the kick back from the track and threw its head up in the early stages and lost ground. She further added that her mount was under pressure throughout the race to maintain its position, adding that the gelding responded to her riding from the 400m and ran to the line strongly.


Race 4: The Victor Black Memorial Benchmark 70 Handicap 1030m

BIG BAD JOEL (L. Tilley) was slow to begin.

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 900m where BIG BAD JOEL was checked and lost ground when racing to the inside of SEAZA (R. Payne). After taking evidence from all riders involved, and viewing the official patrol footage, stewards found that leading up to the incident VINTAGE FLINT (Q. Krogh) laid in despite the efforts of the rider and in doing so placed pressure on VOLUNTARY (S. Bayliss) and BEAUTIFUL BARB (B. Newport) which shifted in slightly placing SEAZA in restricted room. Stewards nonetheless could not apportion blame against any rider due to conflicting evidence and inconclusive race patrol footage. All riders were advised however to afford sufficient racing room to their fellow riders.


Race 5: Landmark Benchmark 60 Handicap 1030m

Stewards declared ELLO ELLO a late withdrawal at 2.20 pm after trainer H. Clarke approached stewards and advised them that the gelding had sustained an injury to the off fore tendon and was lame. Stewards advised Mr Clarke that he would be required to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness before ELLO ELLO was permitted to race again.

DAIRY (R. Payne) was slow to begin.

INNER BLU (J. Letherby) knuckled on jumping away.

THE WATER BOMBER (M. McGillivray), DESERT LAIR (N. Ogura) and HONOUR JACKO (S. Bayliss) were all tightened for room at the start between MUTINY (L. Tilley) and LA CLOISONNE (R. Faehr) when both runners shifted ground. In this incident, DESERT LAIR had to be checked and lost ground.

MUTINY raced wide throughout.

When asked to comment on the performance EAST VILLAGE, E. Ljung stated that the mare travelled well to the 400m, however did not respond to her riding from that point and weakened in the home straight.

When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of DAIRY, Apprentice R. Payne stated that DAIRY was unable to sprint early and keep up with the early pace of the race. She added that in her opinion DAIRY would be better suited to races over further distance.

L. Tilley the rider of MUTINY was reprimanded for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than five occasions prior to the 100m.

R. Faehr rider of LA CLOISONNE was fined $100 for using his whip in a forehand manner on more than five occasions prior to the 100m.
