O’Connell) which was forced to be checked to avoid the heels of BOURGEOIS BABE. L. Appo’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 8 February and to expire at midnight 19 February.

Stewards questioned riders D. McIntosh (FALKOR) and L. Appo (BOURGEOIS BABE), regarding their respective riding tactics when leading and setting a quick tempo in the middle stages and the overall performance of FALKOR. D. McIntosh stated that his instructions were to pressure his mount from the barriers and to lead. He added that he was taken on in the lead by BOURGEOIS BABE which he felt had a detrimental effect on his mount which resulted in FALKOR being under pressure approaching the 400m before weakening significantly from this point. L. Appo stated that his instructions were to go forward and to keep BOURGEOIS BABE’S mind on the race by pressuring it throughout as the horse has a tendency lose focus and not finish it races off. A. Barnes, the trainer of FALKOR, confirmed the instructions adding that D. McIntosh is the regular rider and that the horse has been successful recently when leading. He further added that he had specifically instructed the rider to lead comfortably and not allow other runners to sit outside FALKOR as the horse has weakened before when taken on in the lead. Stewards in considering the riding tactics issued to both riders noted the explanations tendered. A. Barnes undertook to advise stewards in the followings days of anything that may come to his attention that may have had a bearing on FALKOR’S performance. A post race veterinary examination of FALKOR failed to reveal any abnormalities.

CHROMED (Q. Krogh) was momentarily held up on entering the home straight.

Apprentice Q. Krogh (CHROMED) stated that from the wide barrier he restrained his mount to take up a position with cover in accordance with his riding instructions.

ELLO ELLO (L. Appo) was slow to begin.

When asked to comment on the performance of REGAL PRINCE, apprentice N. Ogura stated that his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage and was under pressure from the 800m. He added that the horse would be better suited to races over further distance.

A post race veterinary examination of THE BARGAIN (W. O’Connell) which raced at the rear of the field and was eased down in the home straight, revealed the gelding to have some thickening of the near fore tendon however was not lame. Trainer D.
