WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 2M. ALL TRACK
RACE 1: STEPHEN BARNARD H'CAP - 1110M.
As no other rider was available, permission was granted for M. McDonald to ride TIMELY WATERS half a kilogram overweight. M. McDonald was fined $200.
WEAISHE blundered on jumping away.
HUEY, which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between BLESSUM and MASINDOR, which was taken in by SLIPSTREAM, which shifted in abruptly.
Approaching the 600m., WEAISHE was momentarily tightened for room by SHOW A LITTLE, which shifted in. DOUBLE AR BE, which was following, had to be checked to avoid the heels of WEAISHE. TIMELY WATERS, which was following DOUBLE AR BE, improved to that horse's inside and had to be checked.
Making the home turn, DOUBLE AR BE attempted to improve to the outside of the heels of KOOCHIE and was prevented from doing so by DON'T TELL TOM, which held its ground whilst racing 3 wide.
Shortly after entering the straight, WEAISHE was hampered when disappointed for a run between KEEP COMING and SHOW A LITTLE.
In the early stages of the straight, DOUBLE AR BE had difficulty obtaining clear running, and after leaving the 200m., DOUBLE AR BE raced in restricted room when attempting to improve to the inside of SHOW A LITTLE where there was insufficient room.
DON'T TELL TOM was obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the event.
L. Morrison, rider of KILLACHI, was reprimanded for using her excessively on a horse out of contention.
RACE 2: TOOHEYS EXTRA DRY H'CAP - 1350M.
Trainer J. P. Wallace was fined $50 for presenting NATTIE to the enclosure with blinkers.
TOUGH SWORD, CHIEF DAHAR and AMAIZCAY were slow to begin.
At the entrance to the straight, CONTINUOUSLY shifted out from behind the heels of RAPIDASH in an endeavour to improve its position and in doing so made contact with NATTIE on a number of occasions. Approaching the 200m., CONTINUOUSLY continued to shift out, resulting in NATTIE having to be steadied. G. Colless, rider of CONTINUUSLY, was reprimanded and advised in similar circumstances he must ensure he is fully clear when shifting ground.
In the early stages of the straight, DESK TOP LOVER was held up for clear running behind NATTIE.
S. Seamer, rider of AMAIZCAY, advised that the gelding refused to stretch out at any stage of the race and, in his opinion, the gelding did not appreciate racing on consecutive Saturdays. A veterinary examination of AMAIZCAY failed to reveal and abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 3: XXXX GOLD CLASSIC H'CAP - 1615M.
ASTANA was slow to begin.
BAILS also jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
HIRSCHBERG raced wide in the middle stages.
In the early stages of the straight, KIWI WARRIOR was held up for clear running.
After passing the 300m., CAREYES shifted out under pressure and made contact with CORAL SALUTE.
Over the concluding stages, REGAL TYCOON was held up for clear running.
K. Pope was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CLANGER. He stated that whilst the gelding settled further back than he had anticipated, CLANGER travelled well to a point passing the 600m. where he endeavoured to improved his position, however the horse failed to respond to his riding from the home turn. He could offer no other excuse for the performance. Trainer M. Mair stated he also was disappointed with the run, especially with the horse's finishing effort, where in previous starts CLANGER had found the line well. A veterinary examination of CLANGER failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 4: XXXX QUEENSLANDER DOOMBEN SLIPPER QTIS ADDED STAKES - 1350M.
Trainer G. Osborne was advised that a warning was being placed on KAS NEDIYM in relation to its barrier manners.
SAMMY SEQUALO jumped away awkwardly.
J. Cassidy, rider of NOOR ALA NOO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that after leaving the 1000m. he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of PISTOL KNIGHT, which resulted in that gelding having to be checked approaching the 800m.. J. Cassidy was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 24 May, and to expire at midnight, 5 June. J. Cassidy was also fined $1000.
PROMOTED shifted out at the entrance to the straight to improve and made contact with SLICE OF PARADISE.
Shortly after entering the straight, SAMMY SEQUALO shifted out and made heavy contact with VICTORY GROVE, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.
Approaching the 200m., SAMMY SEQUALAO had to be checked when briefly tightened for room between VICTORY GROVE, which shifted in after being brushed on the hind quarters, and SLICE OF PARADISE, which shifted out slightly.
RACE 5: XXXX BITTER H'CAP - 1200M.
J. Stanley, rider of SNOWY WEATHER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift in approaching the first turn when not clear of GOLDEN SNITCH, resulting in that filly having to be checked. J. Stanley was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 24 May, and to expire at midnight, 5 June. J. Stanley was also fined $1000.
Close to the finish line, GOLDEN SNITCH shifted in and made contact with DANCING HILL.
RACE 6: CASTLEMAINE SOVEREIGN BTC SPRINT - 1350M.
L. Morrison was fined $100 for weighing out on PROUDLY AGGRO without her stirrup irons, which necessitated a delay in the saddling of that horse.
PROUDLY AGGRO and TIMBER TYCOON were both slow to begin.
Passing the 600m., KNICKERBOCKER KID was tightened for room when racing to the inside of SPORTSBRAT.
Approaching the home turn, CARIBOO shifted out to improve from behind the heels of TIT FOR TAAT, and in doing so made contact with SCENIC PEAK on 2 occasions.
Shortly after entering the straight, PROUDLY AGRO had to be steadied off the heels of YOUTHFUL.
CEFFYL was held up in the early stages of the straight.
Nearing the 200m., BAAL YABBA shifted out under pressure and brushed the hind quarters of FOXMORE, which resulted in FOXMORE shifting in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider, taking BAAL YABBA in on to SPORTSBRAT. As a result, PROUDLY AGGRO had to be checked when tightened on to the hind quarters of SCENIC PEAK.
At the 200m., COURT OF JEWELS shifted out to improve and made contact with EMISSION.
Trainer T. Martin was questioned to the reason why he failed to advise stewards of a change in riding tactics on CARIBOO as compared to its start at Eagle Farm on 11 May when the horse was ridden back in the field. Mr Martin explained that at Eagle Farm he instructed G. Colless to ride the horse back due to it being drawn wide, and also with the short run to the first turn he was concerned CARIBOO would be forced to race wide. He added that the horse got further back than anticipated as a consequence was obliged to race wide. Mr Martin further explained today that he had not given jockey C. Brown any instructions as jockey Brown had ridden the horse previously. C. Brown confirmed there had been no instructions issued. Mr Martin was severely reprimanded and given a firm direction that in future he must comply with the practice in Queensland of notifying stewards of any variation in riding tactics.
RACE 7: XXXX DOOMBEN CUP - 2200M.
PRINCE HAL was slow to begin.
Making the turn out of the straight, MR BUREAUCRAT commenced to pulled hard, and MAGUIRE, which was following, had to be steadied to avoid that gelding's heels.
Near the 200m., PIACHAY was held up for clear running and also had to be steadied approaching the winning post.
At the 100m., SHOGUN LODGE had to be steadied off the heels of FOREST JIM.
Following the event, the club's veterinary surgeon reported that CHEVERNY was found to be sore in the near hind leg; MR. BUREAUCRAT pulled up severely lame in the off fore fetlock, and LAURINEL ARGIE was lame in the near fore fetlock; and TRUE GLO was found to be uncoordinated and suffering from heat exhaustion.
RACE 8: HAHN PREMIUM ROUGH HABIT PLATE QTIS ADDED STAKES - 2200M.
RIVER AVON was slow to begin.
BANK NOTE was very slow to begin. Trainer T. McKee advised that the gelding would now return to New Zealand and spelled immediately.
Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, BATTLE SONG commenced to pull hard and race ungenerously when steadied off the heels of BURNING PLATFORM, and in doing so shifted out, taking MAIZCAY MAGIC and HALF HENNESSY wider on the track.
PLATINUM SCISSORS was obliged to race wide in the middle stages.
Approaching the 300m., MAIZCAY MAGIC had to be checked to avoid the heels of EARL.
ALL WINNERS, AMAIZCAY AND CLANGER WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
