As C. Spry was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Race Day Summary.
Race 1: TOLL/QRX 0MW H’CAP - 1010m
1st – Momentously 2nd – Dance Hunter 3rd – Covet Gold 4th – Sequablue
Apprentice T. Bannon was fined $100 for failing to fulfil her engagment on IN MY SIGHTS.
SPLENDID FELLOW (A. Taylor), which was a little slow to begin, was further hampered on jumping away between EMPIRE BURLESQUE (J. Byrne) and AMORE (B. El-Issa) which shifted out.
Jockey B. El-Issa, the rider of AMORE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 950m he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of EMPIRE BURLESQUE, which in turn was taken out tightening the running of TAG (J. Taylor) between POWER EXPRESS (B. Pengelly) and EMPIRE BURLESQUE, resulting in TAG being checked. B. El-Issa’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 19 March, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 10 April 2008. Stewards ordered that the term of suspension be served concurrently with the term of suspension incurred in Race 6.
CLERIC (J. Holder) and IN MY SIGHTS (C. McIver) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 200m EMPIRE BURLESQUE, which was weakening, was inconvenienced by I’M A LEADER (R. Goltz) which was taken out by AMORE.
Approaching the winning post MONASHEE KNIGHT (A. Pattillo) shifted out to obtain clear running around the heels of POWER EXPRESS (B. Pengelly) and in doing so tightened AMORE out on to I’M A LEADER.
A post-race veterinary examination of EMPIRE BURLESQUE revealed that the mare had lost its near fore plate in running and was sore in the near fore foot. Trainer S. Dwyer was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start.
Race 2: PARMALAT H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Craiglea Charm 2nd – Make A Buck 3rd – Belles Opinion 4th – Oh Ruby
PERILOUS PRINCESS was a late scratching at 9:58 a.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice.
SWEET AS (M. Palmer) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with SHEWHOMUSTBEOBEYED (P. Wells).
Shortly after the start SWEET AS had to be checked when tightened for room between CHARVICKY (B. Looker), which shifted out, and BELLES OPINION (D. Evans) which shifted in.
Near the 1200m SWEET AS had to be steadied off the heels of BELLES OPINION.
Jockey J. Cook, the rider of OH RUBY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 1200m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of SISTA KUGAH (S. Galloway), resulting in SISTA KUGAH having to be checked to avoid the heels of OH RUBY. J. Cook’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday, 15 March, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 29 March 2008.
BELLES OPINION raced wide in the early and middle stages.
Passing the 800m CHARVICKY improved up on to the heels of CURBYOURENTHUSIASM (J. Byrne) and had to be steadied.
CRAIGLEA CHARM (G. Colless) lost its off fore plate in running.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SWEET AS, apprentice M. Palmer stated that after beginning only fairly the mare failed to muster her customary early speed and in his opinion raced like a tired horse. Trainer S. Dwyer’s representative Mrs Dwyer could offer no explanation for the mare’s poor performance and indicated that SWEET AS would be sent for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination of SWEET AS failed to reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CHARVICKY, apprentice B. Looker could offer no explanation other than that the horse had a tendency to overrace throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination of CHARVICKY failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: INGHAMS 0MW H’CAP – 1615m
1st – Brief Me 2nd – Spirited Express 3rd – Sir Xaar 4th – The Cavern Club
IN PHUKET was a late scratching at 12:24 p.m. following advice from trainer W. Pholi that he was delayed in traffic.
READY WHEN YOU ARE (P. Wells) and BRIEF ME (S. Galloway) brushed on jumping away.
JUSSEMI (R. Goltz) was slow to begin.
GUERROUJ (M. Palmer) and RAM JAM IN (C. Spry) came together on jumping away.
SIR XAAR (J. Byrne) was obliged to race wide in the early stages.
REQUEST THAT SONG (C. McIver) and OUR LUKAS (B. Looker) were forced to race wide for the majority of the event.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of PENTUP LOVER. After taking evidence from trainer B. Guy and jockey R. Mason, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination of PENTUP LOVER failed to reveal any abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination of GUERROUJ revealed that the gelding was lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer R. Heathcote indicated that GUERROUJ was likely to be retired, however he was advised that should the horse return to the racetrack it would require a veterinary clearance.
Race 4: MORAITIS FRESH PRODUCE H’CAP - 2020m
1st – Sir Coup 2nd – Rezone 3rd – In Rehearsal 4th – Palace Lover
ENCHELLE (D. Evans) jumped away awkwardly.
REZONE (J. Taylor) and IN REHEARSAL (J. Byrne) were slow to begin.
IN REHEARSAL and PALACE LOVER (M. Palmer) were held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
A post-race veterinary examination of ENCHELLE revealed the mare to be showing signs of respiratory distress. Trainer R. Heathcote was advised that he must obtain a veterinary clearance for ENCHELLE before its next start.
Race 5: COCA-COLA 2MW LY H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Lombardy 2nd – Malta 3rd – Upilio 4th – Donbodine
SMARTEN CLASSY (G. Baker) and PROUD NATIVE (J. Byrne) were slow to begin.
Near the 900m UPILIO (G. Colless) threw its head in the air when being restrained.
FEELIN DANDY (M. Radecker) and LIMARKI (R. Mason) raced wide throughout.
Approaching the 600m MALTA (B. Looker) improved up on to the heels of DOONAN DANCER (A. Pattillo) and had to be steadied.
Shortly after entering the straight UPILIO was disappointed for a run between LIMARKI and the tiring DEMOLIR (R. Goltz) which shifted out. UPILIO was then held up for clear running until near the 200m. UPILIO then shifted out around the heels of FEELIN DANDY to obtain clear running and in doing so tightened the running of ROCK OF MUFASA (S. Galloway) which had to be steadied. G. Colless, the rider of UPILIO, was reprimanded under AR. 137(a).
SMARTEN CLASSY was held up for clear running inside the final 200m.
A post-race veterinary examination of LIMARKI failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 6: PINE VALLEY TOMMY SMITH SLIPPER - 1200m
1st – She’s Meaner 2nd – Astatus 3rd – Privileged Class 4th – Lucky Kentucky
ASTATUS (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
DEO JUVANTE (J. Holder) jumped out at the start and made contact with SHE’S MEANER (J. Byrne).
SARATOGA (P. Wolfgram) jumped away awkwardly.
Jockey B. El-Issa, the rider of SHASHER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a), the careless riding being that near the 900m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of SARATOGA, resulting in SARATOGA being checked and shifting in making contact with KICKITBACKLOW (A. Pattillo), which was severely hampered and shifted in making contact with the hind quarters of TRISKELE (G. Colless). CREVASSE (B. Pengelly), which was following KICKITBACKLOW, and DEO JUVANTE (J. Holder) were also hampered in consequence. B. El-Issa’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 19 March, and expire at midnight on, Thursday, 10 April 2008. In addition, B. El-Issa was fined the sum of $500.
Near the 800m CREVASSE (B. Pengelly) was further impeded by KICKITBACKLOW (A. Pattillo) which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Near the 50m PRIVILEGED CLASS (G. Palmer) was momentarily impeded between LUCKY KENTUCKY (G. Baker) and CREVASSE (B. Pengelly) which shifted out under pressure.
Race 7: NESTLE VO ROGUE PLATE 1350m
1st – Dirty 2nd – Swiss Ace 3rd – Pepperwood 4th – Chinchilla Rose
WIND SHEAR (S. Baster) jumped away awkwardly.
DIRTY (R. Goltz) and ACQUIRED (B. El-Issa) came together on jumping away.
PEPPERWOOD (J. Holder) and SWISS ACE (J. Taylor) came together on jumping away.
Passing the 1000m ACQUIRED and PEPPERWOOD were obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of CHINCHILLA ROSE (P. Wells) for a short distance.
CONQUERING SPIRIT (G. Colless) overraced in the early stages.
LADY SHOWHEART (P. Wolfgram), SUTTON FRIEND (B. Pengelly), CONQUERING SPIRIT and DEGENDA (A. Pattillo) were all forced to race wide for the majority of the event.
Approaching the 800m DIRTY had to be steadied off the heels of PEPPERWOOD. TIPSY PIGGY (D. Evans), which was following, had to be steadied off the heels of DIRTY in consequence.
Passing the 200m TIPSY PIGGY and ACQUIRED bumped and as a result ACQUIRED became unbalanced and shifted out inconveniencing KEIKI (J. Byrne). MISTRESS OF DREAMS (K. Forrester), which was following, was momemtarily steadied and obliged to alter course inwards to obtain clear running.
Approaching the finishing line MY MAN MURPHY (S. Scriven) was momentarily impeded when attempting a narrow run between LADY SHOWHEART and PRIDE OF POWER (S. Galloway).
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of KEIKI, J. Byrne stated that after travelling well the horse was placed under pressure near the 500m and failed to respond to his riding. Trainer G. Waterhouse’s representative Mr J. Meijer was unable to offer any explanation for the horse’s performance and undertook to advise stewards in the day subsequent should anything come to light that may have affected the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of KEIKI failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 8: FRANTELLE H’CAP - 1350m
1st – Gatakers Bay 2nd – Thorondo 3rd – Blue Oyster 4th – Stage Shaker
YOUNG LION (R. Goltz) blundered on jumping away and shifted in making contact with SPIRITO VOLANTE (M. Palmer).
SPEEDY DUKE (J. Taylor) overraced in the early stages when wide. J. Taylor then allowed his mount to slide forward and obtain the lead near the 700m.
Near the 400m SHAMIR (T. Bannon) had to be steadied off the heels of SPEEDY DUKE.
Near the 300m STAGE SHAKER (B. Pengelly) improved up on to the heels of INNOCENTTASSIE (B. Looker) and had to be steadied.
When questioned regarding the performance of IMA JOKER, J. Byrne stated that although the horse raced keenly in the early stages, in his opinion IMA JOKER failed to run out the distance of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of IMA JOKER failed to reveal any abnormalities.
