SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
As C. Reith was indisposed, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
Race 1: Ownit Homes QTIS 2yo H’cap - 1350m
1st – Dusty Moon 2nd – Hearty Laughter 3rd – Bennike 4th – Hickock Hand
Leaving the 1000m, RICH BABY (S. Scriven) shifted in and made contact with JAMELDEN CAT (S. Cormack), forcing that horse in towards the rail.
Near the 800m, HICKOCK HAND (M. Radecker) had to be eased to avoid the heels of CELESTAFY (P. Hammersley), which shifted in. P. Hammersley, rider of CELESTAFY, was advised to allow more clearance when crossing.
Leaving the 800m, JAMELDEN CAT shifted out and made contact with RICH BABY, and both horses brushed again near the 700m.
JAMELDEN CAT was held up in the straight for clear running and near the 200m when attempting to obtain clear running, shifted out and made contact with RICH BABY .
Near the 150m, BENTLEY BLUE (M. Cahill) had to be eased to avoid the heels of RICH BABY, which was taken out by JAMELDEN CAT when attempting to obtain clear running.
RICH BABY (S. Scriven) was obliged to race 3 wide for the majority of the event.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of JAMELDEN CAT, S. Cormack stated that the horse seemed uncomfortable when racing in restricted room at varous stages, and after getting into clear running from the 200m, did not finish the race off as expected. Trainer B. McLachlan was of the opinion that the weight and the rain affected track may have been factors leading to the disappointing performance.
Race 2: Markinson Business Solutions NMW H’cap – 2020m
1st –Mister Tivoli 2nd – Indiana Storm 3rd – Bear Valley 4th - Agrios
BEAR VALLEY (S. Cormack) and OLYMPIC TIME (J. Jones) both jumped away awkwardly.
MONTOUX (M. Palmer) was caught 4 wide rounding the first turn and obliged to race wide until taking a position outside the leader near the 1000m.
COXLESS (K. Wharton), which was compounding, was tightened for room after leaving the 300m between MISTER TIVOLI (J. Holder) and INDIANA STORM (P. Hammersley), which shifted in to obtain clear running.
BEAR VALLEY (S. Cormack) was held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
LOGIE (M. Radecker) raced 3 wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on MONTOUX, M. Palmer stated that his instructions were to endeavour to race the horse handy with cover, however after being caught 4 wide he had difficulty crossing OLYMPIC TIME (J. Jones) and he felt he had no option than to progress forward and race outside the leader near the 1000m.
Race 3: Greg Grant Saddlery Class 6 Plate – 1615m
1st –Rebounded 2nd – Ready When You Are 3rd – Punch Up 4th – October Sky
SIR COUP shifted a plate when being presented to the parade ring and required the attention of the farrier, resulting in the horse being late on the track.
Approaching the 1500m, ON THE UP (G. Colless) was tightened for room between BIT OF MAGIC (M. Cahill) and POIYM (J. Holder), which was taken out by OUR JANGLES (S. Scriven), which shifted out away from SIR COUP (R. McMahon).
When questioned regarding the disapointing performance of FROSTY, K. Wharton stated that the horse was not suited by the pattern of the race and particularly the slowing of the pace on at least 2 occasions.
Following this event, the track rating was upgraded to slow.
Race 4: BDO Kendalls NMW H’cap - 1200m
1st – Awase Ougi 2nd – Sneaky Squirrel 3rd – Jellicles 4th – Paradise Dancer
YOUR LATEST TRICK was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 2 pm after the horse was injured at the barriers. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on YOUR LATEST TRICK were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 5 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 6 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets.
SNEAKY SQUIRREL was reluctant to proceed to the barriers and trainer W. Whitney was advised that the horse would have to trial satisfactorily prior to racing again.
Near the 250m, KIDS SHOW (S. Cormack) shifted out away from DARDAN (S. Seamer) and made contact with BOOM SHAKER (J. Byrne), forcing that gelding out on to SLEEK REPEAT (A. Taylor). S. Cormack, rider of KIDS SHOW, was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SAMUI STAR, trainer K. Fleming was at a loss to explain the performance as the horse had pleased in its work leading up to this race. Jockey B. El-Issa stated that the horse travelled well in running, however when asked for an effort, did not respond as expected, and he agreed that the performance was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of SAMUI STAR failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
Race 5: Ray White QTIS 3yo H’cap - 1200m
1st – Charming Rogue 2nd – Abirra 3rd – Regal Castanea 4th – Rumba Jack
HOWGOODSTHAT (R. McMahon) was slow to begin.
REGAL CASTANEA (S. Galloway) gots its head up and overraced approaching the first turn.
Passing the 900m, YUKETAN (S. Cormack) improved up on to the heels of CHARMING ROGUE (G. Colless) and shifted out abruptly.
RUMBA JACK (A. Taylor)was inclned to overrace after leaving the 800m.
On straightening, RUMBA JACK attempted to improve from behind JAD (P. Hammersley) and in doing so made contact with CHARMING ROGUE, which held its position.
CHARMING ROGUE shifted in close to the finish line and brushed ABIRRA (J. Holder).
Race 6: Oamps Insurance Brokers 1MW Last Year H’cap – 1110m
1st – Pagan County 2nd – Myagi 3rd – Tornadic Sky 4th – Black Suit
G. Baker, rider of BLACK SUIT, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 550m he permitted his mount to shift in, tightening the running of PICCOHI (R. McMahon), resulting in PICCOHI being checked and making contact with the running rail. G. Baker was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 29 July and to expire at midnight, 6 August 2008.
MYAGI (J. Holder) was held up for clear running until near the 100m.
MI CIELO (A. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
A post-race veterinary examination of PICCOHI failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 7: Montrose Access Ownit Homes Open H’cap - 1350m
1st – Victory Code 2nd – Black Ink 3rd – Foolish 4th – Craiglea Warrior
POLAR BEAR (S. Scriven) and PROSECUTION (J. Holder) missed the start.
Near the 900m, FOOLISH (J. Byrne) improved on to the heels of CRAIGLEA WARRIOR (G. Baker) and had to be steadied and shifted out.
PROSECUTION struck the running rail approaching the 850m.
Passing the 300m, PROSECUTION (J. Holder) was momentarily tightened for room between BENALLEN (R. Wiggins) and POLAR BEAR (S. Scriven) when both horses shifted ground. PROSECUTION then had to be switched around the heels of POLAR BEAR to gain clear running to the finish line.
FOOLISH (J. Byrne) was inclined to lay in in the run to the finish.
Race 8: Meridien Retirement Living Class 6 H’cap - 1350m
1st – Sommersea Drive 2nd – Mr Doyle 3rd – Line By Line 4th – My First Affair
The connections of MISS ARMIDALE, which missed the start badly losing ground, were informed that the mare would be required to pass a further barrier test before the horse races again.
STYLIZED (S. Cormack) was tightened for room on jumping away betwee MY FIRST AFFAIR (B. El-Issa) and SOMMERSEA DRIVE (M. Cahill), which shifted in.
Near the 1300m, STYLIZED (S. Cormack) lost its position and MY FIRST AFFAIR (B. El-Issa) was buffeted for room between SOMMERSEA DRIVE (M. Cahill), which shifted in, and MR DOYLE (R. Wiggins), which was taken out by FALCREST (S. Seamer).
Near the 1100m, NEPRO (J. Byrne) got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously for a short distance.
FALCREST (S. Seamer) was momentarily held up near the 200m.
FEELIN DANDY (M. Radecker) was caught wide from its wide barrier and obliged to race 3 wide for the entire race.
