From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 2/1/2012 – Race 8
Trainer A. Bailey reported that DOBROS, which weakened badly over the final 300m, did not run out the 1400m of the race considering it was stepping up from competing over 900m at its most recent start.
Race 1: Drumbeats @ Lyndhurst Stud Class 3 H’Cap - 1640m
1st – Glare 2nd – Count Your Fingers 3rd – Shocking Blue 4th - Wabeel
Connections advised SHOCKING BLUE would be ridden in rearward position with blinkers removed today. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Stewards sought an explanation from rider R. Wiggins in respect to the tactics he adopted on STAKED EMOTION, whereby he continually restrained the horse down the back straight when occupying a position outside the leader when the pace was slow. R. Wiggins informed stewards that he was instructed to ride STAKED EMOTION with cover on the basis that the horse was stepping up from 1350m to 1600m today and at its most recent start it had led and weakened over the concluding stages. Trainer M. Dunn confirmed the instructions issued to R. Wiggins and reiterated that STAKED EMOTION was stepping up to 1600m today and informed stewards that he was keen to have the horse ridden in a fashion which enabled it to finish the race off strongly. After considering all the evidence stewards advised jockey Wiggins that in their view he had ridden a poorly judged race in that he continued to restrain STAKED EMOTION when occupying the position outside the lead when the first 1000m of the race was recorded to be covered in 105.72.
Race 2: Sky Racing Entires & Geldings Maiden H'Cap - 1350m
1st – General Collins 2nd – Ludvig 3rd – Jetalong 4th – Adventurous Reg
TOUGH TACTICS was declared a late scratching by order of stewards at 1.22 p.m. when a veterinary inspection revealed the presence of blood in the near side nostril. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on TOUGH TACTICS were ordered to be refunded, with the following deductions applicable:-
0 cents in the dollar for the win - #1 (GENERAL COLLINS)
9 cents in the dollar for the place of winner - #1 (GENERAL COLLINS)
3 cents in the dollar for 2nd place - #2 (LUDVIG)
7 cents in the dollar for 3rd place - #5 (JETALONG)
Trainer T. Thomas was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to TOUGH TACTICS again racing.
BRASCAN (Michael Palmer) jumped away awkwardly.
Leaving the 1200m PACIFIC THUNDER (App B. Wallace) commenced to buck and shifted outwards. PACIFIC THUNDER regained contact with the main body of the field near the 800m and raced wide from that point onwards. Trainer S. Essery was advised that the horse must trial to the satisfaction of stewards before being permitted to race again.
J. Taylor reported that ADVENTUROUS REG was travelling strongly passing the 500m but he was reluctant to improve to the outside of PACIFIC THUNDER given that horse’s earlier racing manners. He therefore elected to improve to the inside of PACIFIC THUNDER where a narrow run had opened up. J. Taylor added that at the same time UTMOST FAITH (J. Byrne) shifted out to improve which resulted in him being tightened for room and held up and unable to improve rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. J. Taylor further added that once clear ADVENTUROUS REG finished the race off quite well.
JETALONG lost an off hind plate in running.
Race 3: Bollinger Champagne Mares Maiden H'Cap – 1350m

WISHMORE (App B. Looker) laid in in the straight placing its rider at a disadvantage when attempting to fully test the horse.
Approaching the 100m FASCIA (R. McMahon) had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between COSSOTTO (R. Wiggins) and POSEN, which shifted in. FASCIA was then obliged to alter course to obtain clear running.
WIN FOR LAYLA (App T. Bell), DOREBOY (D. Whitmore) and VON BADEN (K. Fujii) all raced wide throughout the event.
A post race veterinary examination of REIGNING MAGIC (J. Taylor) revealed the colt to be shin sore in both fore legs. Trainer J. Walk will have to provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to REIGNING MAGIC again racing.
Race 5: Sky International Class 5 H'Cap – 1350m
1st – Trombone Alley 2nd – Starlin 3rd – Igles Star 4th - Interview
Trainer D. Forster was reprimanded for the late declaration of rider for STARLIN.
INTERVIEW (App T. Bell) was slow to begin.
IGLES STAR (C. Munce) jumped out at the start inconveniencing PEGUNNY CAT (R. McMahon).
N. Thomas the rider of TROMBONE ALLEY pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 150m when insufficiently clear of INTERVIEW, resulting in INTERVIEW having to be checked when tightened for room between TROMBONE ALLEY and IGLES STAR. N. Thomas’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of six (6) meetings to commence midnight 8 January 2012 and expire midnight 18 January 2012. In assessing penalty stewards acknowledged N. Thomas’ good riding record and guilty plea.
PEGUNNY CAT (R. McMahon) lost a near fore plate in running.
Race 6: Lyndhurst Stud Fillies & Mares Class 3 H’Cap – 1110m
1st – Snippets Secret 2nd – C’Est Lorraine 3rd – Product 4th - Starlistic
The start of this race was delayed when C’EST LORRAINE, which lunged at the gates prior to the start being effected, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.
MISS SHABANGABANG (E. Kehoe) overraced at the heels of C’EST LORRAINE (C. Munce) for a short distance approaching the 800m.
App B. Richardson the rider of AROUND THE WORLD reported that she was unable to restrain her mount in the early stages and as a result raced wide outside the speed.
