Race 1: SKY RACING WORLD CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1110m
MY SHABELLA (M. Cahill) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m JUNGLE HEAT (R. McMahon), which hung out slightly when racing tight to the inside of SPINHRO (B. Stewart), had to be steadied from heels when that runner shifted in slightly. B. Stewart was advised to ensure he allows sufficient racing room to his fellow riders in similar circumstances.
EPIC TERRA (A. Allen) was unable to secure clear running in the home straight and approaching the 100m had to be steadied from the heels of AROUSED (G. Colless), which was taken in slightly by D’JET (A. Holt). Following this, EPIC TERRA continued to be held up for clear running until inside the 100m.
Over the concluding stages EPIC TERRA shifted out and brushed AROUSED, which was weakening.
When asked to comment on the performance of AROUSED, G. Colless stated that the gelding was able to settle outside of the leader THEFIFTHHOLE (L. Cassidy) without having to do too much work and following this AROUSED travelled well until placed under pressure upon straightening where it did not respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer A. Denham could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of AROUSED revealed a small laceration to the gelding’s nearside cheek.
A post-race veterinary examination of HUCKLEBERRY DANE revealed the gelding to have cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer L. Birchley was advised that he would be required to provide to stewards a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, for the horse, and that HUCKLEBERRY DANE must compete satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to race again.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 3 retrospective.
Race 2: CARLTON MID OPEN H’CAP - 2000m
RAEBURN (P. Hammersley) and SAINT ENCOSTA (T. Bell) were slow to begin.
Over the concluding stages RAEBURN shifted in away from SAINT ENCOSTA, which resulted in EXTREME MOVER (S. Bogenhuber) and BID SPOTTER (K. Matheson) being taken inwards.
A post-race veterinary examination of TOPPING (A. Holt) revealed that the gelding had bled from both nostrils. Trainer T. Gollan was advised that TOPPING would be ineligible to start for 3 months and that prior to resuming racing the horse must perform satisfactorily in a gallop of at least 1000m in the presence of a steward.
Race 3: NATIONAL JOCKEYS CELEBRATION DAY CLASS 6 H’CAP - 1600m
VIKING HEART (G. Colless) jumped away awkwardly.
EQUISSENTIAL (B. Stewart) was slow to begin.
A post-race veterinary examination of GUNNER KNOX (R. McMahon) revealed that the gelding had bled from both nostrils and to be slightly lame in the near foreleg. Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was advised that GUNNER KNOX would be ineligible to start for 3 months and that prior to resuming racing the horse must perform satisfactorily in a gallop of at least 1000m in the presence of a steward.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice J. Johnson regarding the performance of MICKEN. Apprentice Johnson indicated that she was instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position, and when caught wide in the early stages she elected to restrain to the rear of the field. She added that MICKEN was unsuited when the race developed into a sprint home after the pace was only moderate in the middle stages. She added that in hindsight, after beginning well, it may have been a better option to allow the horse to stride forward in the early stages to take up a handy position. A post-race veterinary examination of MICKEN (J. Johnson) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Stewards questioned M. Cahill regarding the riding tactics he adopted on REVITALISE, which settled towards the rear of the field, which is in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. M. Cahill stated that he had no specific instructions other than from the wide barrier not to ride aggressively in the early stages and be caught in a forward position without cover as REVITALISE has a tendency to overrace when ridden in this fashion. Jockey Cahill added that from the wide barrier he took the decision to restrain the gelding in the early stages in an attempt to find cover, adding that REVITALISE was not suited when the tempo of the race was only moderate in the middle stages. Trainer D. Murphy confirmed that he did not issue any specific instructions and agreed that REVITALISE does overrace if ridden aggressively in the early stages.
Race 4: LILIVALE STUD QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1600m
PANYA (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
ALWAYS A GIBBERER (M. Cahill) overraced rounding the first turn and near the 1200m had to be restrained from the heels of OUTBACK LIGHTNING (A. Butler).
P. Holmes (OUTSTRIP) was issued with a severe reprimand for permitting his mount to shift out rounding the home turn around the heels of ALWAYS A GIBBERER, resulting in PANYA having to be steadied and becoming unbalanced.
Race 5: PORTABELLA BM85 H’CAP - 1350m
Connections advised that it would be the intention to have KEEP IT MOIST (R. McMahon) ridden in a handy position, which is similar to the intention at the horse’s previous start, however after meeting with interference at the start it raced back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.
When the pace steadied approaching the 900m USAIN PRINCE (T. Bell) had to be restrained from the heels of DE DOZEN STARS (J. Byrne) when overracing.
JOINT CHIEFS (K. Matheson) overraced in the early and middle stages.
DANSAL (A. Taylor) was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure over the final 300m.
Stewards sought an explanation from R. McMahon regarding the performance of KEEP IT MOIST, which was backing up from its successful performance last Saturday. Jockey McMahon stated that he elected to take a sit behind USAIN PRINCE in the early stages as he was of the opinion that USAIN PRINCE would maintain the lead, however when USAIN PRINCE surrendered that position to DE DOZEN STARS near the 1000m the tempo of the race slackened and this resulted in him having to restrain to avoid the heels of USAIN PRINCE. He added that the tempo of the race in the middle stages was only slow and he had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight until near the 200m. He further added that KEEP IT MOIST is best suited when able to finish its races off when there is genuine speed in the race. A post-race veterinary examination of KEEP IT MOIST revealed no significant findings other than that the gelding had cast its off hind plate in running.
Race 6: YELLOWGLEN F&M 0MW H’CAP - 1200m
The start of this race was delayed when BRITAILA KATE (M. Cahill) got its near hind leg caught in the barriers. BRITAILA KATE was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.
PREPARATION (J. Byrne) and LA TIKKA ROSA (G. Colless) were tightened at the start between FLYING FUJI (R. McMahon) and JACARANDA AVENUE (L. Cassidy), both of which shifted ground.
JACARANDA AVENUE, JACQUETTA (J. Johnson) and PREPARATION raced wide throughout.
Near the 700m ELUSIVE STORM (A. Coome), when overracing, had to be checked from the heels of QUIZETTE (G. Goold). At the same stage, I GET EXCITED (C. Munce) had to be steadied when tightened for room between ELUSIVE STORM and JACQUETTA, which shifted in.
Rounding the home turn until after passing the 300m ELUSIVE STORM was unable to secure clear running.
Approaching the 100m JACARANDA AVENUE, when weakening, had to be steadied when tightened for room between QUIZETTE, which shifted out under pressure, and ELUSIVE STORM, which was taken in slightly by JACQUETTA.
When asked to explain the performance of LA TIKKA ROSA, rider G. Colless explained that from the wide barrier the mare was ridden towards the rear of the field and was unable to secure running in the early part of the home straight and when placed under pressure did not sprint. He added that he was not dissatisfied with the way in which LA TIKKA ROSA finished the race off.
Apprentice A. Allen was questioned regarding the riding tactics he adopted on GOTTA BE LUCKY. He stated that he was instructed to ride the mare at the rear of the field as it races best when ridden in this manner. He added that when he restrained the mare in the early stages it lost contact with the main body of the field despite his urgings. He added that GOTTA BE LUCKY worked to the line well. Stewards noted apprentice Allen’s explanation.
When questioned regarding the performance of BROOKTON TIARA, P. Hammersley stated that after being slow to begin the horse only travelled fairly in the early and middle stages and when placed under pressure failed to respond to his riding. He added that although the weight may have been a contributing factor, he was nonetheless disappointed with today’s performance.
Trainer S. Kendrick was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of LIGHTFEET LADY (K. Matheson) today. Mr Kendrick explained that LIGHTFEET LADY was not suited last Saturday when it got caught wide in a 1010m race where the pace was fast. He added that LIGHTFEET LADY was better suited over the 1200m of today’s event when it was able to lead and dictate the tempo from the good barrier. His explanation was noted.
Race 7: GALLOPERS $11.95 MEALS OPEN H’CAP - 1200m
When asked to explain the disappointing performance of ESSINGTON, apprentice G. Goold stated that the gelding was unable to muster any early speed and despite his urgings in the middle stages did not travel well and was disappointing in its finishing effort in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination of ESSINGTON revealed no significant findings. Trainer D. Hansen undertook to report to stewards anything that comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the horse’s performance.
A post-race veterinary examination of SHAFEEQ revealed the gelding to be exhibiting an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer D. Forster will be advised that she must supply the results of an endoscopic examination prior to SHAFEEQ being permitted to race again.
Race 8: GOULBURN VALLEY C,G&E 0MW H’CAP - 1200m
Trainer L. Mayfield-Smith was fined $200 for the late scratching of FRACTIONS at 7.44 am.
SHAFTSMAN (T. Jeffries) was slow to begin.
CAPPIN JACK (A. Taylor) overraced in the early stages and passing the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of ALL MY ANGELS (J. Johnson).
BRIBIE (G. Goold), ALL MY ANGELS and COVERT CHARMOUR (L. Dillon) raced wide throughout.
Upon straightening MASTERFUL PLAY (G. Colless) shifted out to improve which resulted in MR THATCHER (E. Wilkinson) being taken out on to ALL MY ANGELS, which was also taken out on to COVERT CHARMOUR, which became unbalanced.
LAST LAP (A. Allen) was held up in the early stages of the home straight and approaching the 200m had to alter course to avoid the heels of CHIPP’N AWAY (J. Byrne). A short distance later LAST LAP again had to alter course to avoid the heels of the tiring CONFIDENT STAR (T. Bell).
DEB’S HOPE (A. Coome) laid out when placed under pressure over the final 200m. This resulted in ALL MY ANGELS being taken wider on the track.
S. Bogenhuber (THE STOREMAN) will be reminded of her obligations to ensure she rides her mounts right out to the end of the race.
Stewards sought an explanation from T. Bell regarding the disappointing performance of CONFIDENT STAR. He reported that the gelding travelled comfortably in the lead but soon after straightening did not respond to this riding and was disappointing. He added that CONFIDENT STAR may not have backed up from its hard run 10 days ago. A post-race veterinary examination of CONFIDENT STAR revealed a slower than normal recovery rate. Stewards will interview trainer G. Heinrich regarding her intentions in relation to the horse’s future racing program.
