QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 14.04.01

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr S Railton (Chairman), Mr A Reardon, Mr R Sanders, Mr J Williamson (Cadet), Ms S Gillespie (Cadet)

WEATHER – OVERCAST TRACK – GOOD RAIL – OUT 5M ALL TRACK

RACE 1: RAJAH SAHIB H'CAP – 1826M

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BOLDON, apprentice A Merritt stated that the gelding settled well in the lead, however when let down in the straight the horse only plugged to the line. A Merritt was unable to offer any excuses for BOLDON's effort. Trainer M Nolan was at a loss to explain BOLDON's performance in today's event and indicated that the horse had done well in preparation for its assignment. Mr Nolan undertook to report back to stewards any matter which might come to light which may explain the horse's run. A veterinary examination of BOLDON immediately after the event failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from the gelding. However, it was noted that BOLDON shifted its near fore plate during the event.

A Merritt, the rider of the 5th placegetter BOLDON, was reprimanded for failing to weigh in.

RACE 2: GUNSYND H'CAP – 1300M

Trainer J Shelton was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for KARATE by the prescribed time.

HIS LEGACY began awkwardly.

A veterinary examination of CAN GET EXCITED, which tailed off, failed to reveal any abnormality.

C Reith, the rider of the winner TOUGH SWORD, was reprimanded for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over his declared weight.

RACE 3: MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION H'CAP – 1500M

At the 500m JOLTIN JOE was hampered when momentarily cramped for room between EL CARTERO and DESK TOP LOVER.

RACE 4: CITIUS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1400M

Approaching the 200m HELLIE MISSED shifted out under pressure taking ENA'S TREASURE out on to NEUTRAL SKY.

RACE 5: EASTER CUP – 2132M

S Seamer reported that FRONT ROW was inclined to hang in during the event.

When questioned B Stewart stated that although it appeared MR. SMUGG did not have clear running in the early stages of the straight, the gelding was actually under full pressure and appeared somewhat reluctant to extend itself when racing to the inside of FRONT ROW. He added that MR. SMUGG eventually responded to his riding after he was able to angle around the heels of 'TIS LOVE inside the 100m.

RACE 6: C A MORRIS SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1200M

MISS MARTINDALE and FLYING ANA bumped heavily at the start.

OUR LAA DEE DA and THYLACINE also made contact on jumping away.

After racing greenly in the early stages OUR LAA DEE DA commenced to hang out from the 800m and ran wide particularly rounding the home turn. A veterinary examination of OUR LAA DEE DA subsequent to the event revealed the filly was shin sore in both forelegs. Trainer J Nielsen was advised that OUR LAA DEE DA would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.

On the home turn MISS MARTINDALE shifted out around the heels of GEE EYE JANE and as a consequence made contact with GRAND ESTIME.

When attempting a run to the inside of MISS MARTINDALE where there was insufficient room just prior to the 200m, FLYING ANA had to be checked when MISS MARTINDALE shifted in slightly.

After being straightened by its rider S Seamer, MISS MARTINDALE again shifted in when struck with the whip approaching the 150m resulting in GEE EYE JANE being checked. D'ARGENT FILLE, which had been held up for a short distance, was also further hampered at this stage. Whilst stewards were satisfied that MISS MARTINDALE's waywardness had been the primary cause of the incident, S Seamer, the rider of that filly, was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to make greater effort to keep his mount on a true course.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that TELL SOMEONE was galloped on on the near hind tendon.

Following his ride on GEE EYE JANE, C Reith was examined by the Club's medical officer and stood down from remaining engagements. The following riding replacements were approved:

Race 7 OLIVIER J Taylor
Race 8 ACE CLUB J Overell

RACE 7: BRIBIE H'CAP – 1200M

SAHARA COVET jumped in at the start hampering SEA BREEZE.

OVERFOND jumped away awkwardly.

After travelling a short distance OVERFOND shifted in resulting in FEDERAL AGENT, KENCONCARNE and OLIVIER all being placed in restricted room. Z Purton, the rider of OVERFOND, was reprimanded in relation to this incident.

Z Purton was further cautioned for allowing his mount to shift in at the 1100m when not quite clear of SO PRECISE, resulting in SO PRECISE being steadied. When SO PRECISE lost ground FEDERAL AGENT, which was shifting inwards and at the same time racing fiercely, ran up on to the heels of SO PRECISE and had to be checked. This resulted in further crowding to KENCONCARNE and OLIVIER and also causing some inconvenience to GASOLINE.

An inquiry was also held into the reason for SAHARA COVET being checked at the 1000m. It was established that after initially racing in restricted room inside AGGRAVATION just prior to the 1000m, AGGRAVATION then shifted in further when brushed by LAURIE'S LOTTERY, causing SAHARA COVET to be checked. In the circumstances stewards took no direct action, however both J Byrne (AGGRAVATION) and A Russell (LAURIE'S LOTTERY) were reprimanded for failing to make more endeavour to provide SAHARA COVET with comfortable galloping room.

Stewards adjourned an inquiry into the reason for apprentice A Morrison weighing in in excess of half a kilogram overweight on the 6th placegetter SAHARA COVET.

SUPER ESPION was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and found to have two bruises on the near shoulder.

RACE 8: TIME AND TIDE H'CAP – 1000M

MACALBERT jumped away very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly resulting in BLUE MARLOO being checked when taken across the heels of ANOTHER POSSESSION.

MACALBERT continued to shift out when racing ungenerously, causing BLUE MARLOO to be further hampered when tightened on to FESTINO.

At the 700m VAINQUEUR had to be steadied off the heels of ROYAL PHANTOM which shifted in.

On straightening TURF TIGER and ROYAL PHANTOM were hampered when cramped for room between WINNEZZAR , which shifted in slightly, and FAVOURITE PRINCESS, which shifted out around the heels of CHARBIS to improve. G Palmer, the rider of FAVOURITE PRINCESS, was cautioned.

VAINQUEUR ran in under pressure in the straight.

MACALBERT also had a tendency to lay in and raced greenly under pressure in the straight.

BLUE MARLOO was held up for clear running over the final 150m.

ALL WINNERS AND BOLDON WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
