QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 12.07.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr C. Clifford, Mr C. McLune, Mr D. Collingwood, Mr C. Waller.

WEATHER – OVERCAST TRACK – SLOW RAIL – OUT 1M

RACE 1: GLENLOGAN PARK H'CAP – 1200M

PEDRO AND LES bled from both nostrils on returning to the enclosure. As this was the second occasion on which the gelding had bled, it will incur a mandatory lifetime ban from racing. A swab sample was taken from PEDRO AND LES.

RACE 2: ROB ANDREWES BLOODSTOCK INSURANCE H'CAP – 1500M

Passing the 1200m when the pace steadied, KINGCIDON shifted out taking TEKWILA and SNOWY WEATHER wider on the track. J. Taylor reported that in this incident his saddle shifted forward.

Apprentice Z. Purton was questioned as to tactics on SIN CITY after leaving the 600m. He stated that shortly after leaving the crossing he had anticipated that either RUFUS or HANCOCK would take him forward into the race and he elected to stay close to the inside as he was reluctant to cover extra ground by being wide approaching the home turn. Whilst his explanation was noted, stewards accepted his riding of the horse from the 400m to the finish line, however he was nonetheless advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to improve his position sooner than he had on this occasion.

RACE 3: CLARET QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1600M

On return to scale a protest was lodged by Z. Purton, the rider of 5th placegetter PROUD NATIVE, against DELLWOOD DANCER (G. Colless) being declared 4th, alleging interference near the 700m. After taking evidence from all parties, stewards dismissed the objection on the grounds that PROUD NATIVE did not have full purchase on the run and had to be checked between DELLWOOD DANCER and the tiring MILKMAN.

PISTOL KNIGHT jumped in at the start and hampered PROUD NATIVE which was also slow to begin.

LA TAR jumped away awkwardly.

After receiving a complaint from the connections of CHAPEAU BRILLANT and Mr B. Dias, stable foreperson for trainer R. Heathcote, stewards interviewed the owners of CHAPEAU BRILLANT and Mr Dias in relation to apprentice D. Evans' riding of the filly in the early stages in light of instructions given whereby they had requested that the horse be ridden aggressively from the start. D. Evans explained that after CHAPEAU BRILLANT was a little slow to jump, PISTOL KNIGHT shifted out and he was hesitant to ride aggressively at that stage as he anticipated that horse shifting out further. Whilst D. Evans' explanation was noted, stewards informed the connections that they were not satisfied that D. Evans had breached the rules.

RACE 4: BRISBANE BLOODSTOCK QTC BREEDERS SWEEPSTAKES – 1300M

NEUROLOGY was slow to begin.

Near the 900m CHIEF EAGLE EYED shifted in, clipped the heels of MAIZCAY MISS and blundered.

NEUROLOGY, which was obliged to race wide throughout, was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon on return to the enclosure and found to be shin sore in both forelegs.

RACE 5: CHARMOSA QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP – 1400M

AMEX and MITANNI were slow to begin.

MIGHTY ICON jumped the 600 metre crossing.

After leaving the 400m AMEX shifted out and made contact with MITANNI.

The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that MITANNI pulled up lame in the near hind leg.

RACE 6: UNEQUALLED H'CAP – 1806M

Trainer D. Bougoure was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for MATTSTAR by the prescribed time.

TIMBER TYCOON was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon prior to the start and passed fit to start.

RACE 7: ASCOT H'CAP – 1400M

MAGIQUE SKY reared as the gates opened and lost ground.

Shortly after the start CALAWAY GAL and HEROISM were tightened for room between KENCONCARNE and DEUXIEME which shifted in.

MINER'S UNION was slow to begin.

Approaching the 1200m TREASURE THE KWILA had to be steadied to avoid the heels of PANORAMA HEIGHTS.

Passing the 1000m DEUXIEME (D. Tanti) shifted in and tightened the running of KENCONCARNE and MINER'S UNION and near the 850m MINER'S UNION had to be checked when further tightened for room by KENCONCARNE (G. Colless) which shifted away from DEUXIEME. Both D. Tanti and G. Colless were advised to exercise more care in future.

CONSULAR was obliged to race wide throughout.

When questioned as to the performance of STARTELL, M. Pelling stated that the gelding did race closer to the lead in the early stages but was unable to sprint when placed under pressure in the straight when taken wider on the track. The explanation was noted.

RACE 8: LORD DIERRE H'CAP – 1600M

Near the 500m Z. Purton attempted to improve his position on MAKES ME DIZZY and made contact with TAKE STRIKE.

Shortly after entering the straight WINNING FRIENDS was disappointed for a run between SPACE COWBOY and NARWHAL which shifted in.

Close to the finishing line COCKY CRUISER and SPACE COWBOY made contact.

A veterinary examination of TAKE STRIKE failed to reveal any abnormality.

ALL WINNERS AND PEDRO AND LES WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
