QUEENSLAND TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT. 14.08.04

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr J. Hackett (Chairman), Mr C. Clifford, Mr D Hensler, Mr P. Gillard, Mr M. Tutt.

WEATHER – FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL –OUT 6M

RACE 1: GREY AFFAIR H'CAP – 1200M

As the start was effected FELICITATE reared, resulting in its rider K. Cunningham being dislodged in the barriers. Correct weight was delayed and after interviewing the starter and viewing the patrol film, FELICITATE was declared a runner. The connections of FELICITATE indicated that the horse's current racing program would be reviewed and the horse may be retired.

Shortly after entering the straight SHYSU shifted out slightly and brushed AIR OF GRACE. A short distance later AIR OF GRACE then shifted in and restricted the racing room of SHYSU.

Passing the finishing line SHYSU became unbalanced when in restricted room inside AIR OF GRACE.

When questioned as to the performance of SHYSU, C. Whiteley and trainer R. Lipp could offer no excuses and it was indicated that the horse would be sent to be spelled. A veterinary examination of SHYSU revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 2: OUR ROSALEE H'CAP – 1600M

KUTALO blundered on jumping away.

Near the 350m THE AWESOME CHANCE was hampered between IT'S WHO DEANIE and JUST POLITE which shifted out to improve.

When questioned as to the performance of IT'S WHO DEANIE, S. Katsidis stated that on straightening he pulled the mare to the outside to work into the race, however it was reluctant to respond to his riding. Near the 200m, when moving back towards the inside behind runners, the horse then commenced to accelerate and finished the race off well. He felt that the horse's reluctance at the top of the straight to respond to his riding was due to a strong headwind. He also was of the opinion that the mare may be looking for races over a longer distance. Trainer L. Birchley confirmed the comments of S. Katsidis and also indicated that it was intended that the horse be stepped up in distance. A veterinary examination of IT'S WHO DEANIE revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 3: ROCK SHOW H'CAP – 1200M

As G. McKeon was to be overweight, Y. Yamazaki was substituted as the rider of LUST FOR VICTORY. G. McKeon will be interviewed at a time to be determined.

MURDSA and KILBRANNAN were slow to begin.

Leaving the 1000m CAMBOOYA had to be eased to avoid the heels of NADEROZ which was taken in by QUALO. G. Colless, the rider of QUALO, was reprimanded and advised to provide more clearance in future. When being steadied, CAMBOOYA then shifted out and hampered EPIC SKY which got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

TELEGRAND, which was caught wide after the start, raced wide for the majority of the event.

MURDSA was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and until near the 200m.

RACE 4: YOUNG CARBINIER QTIS H'CAP – 1200M

AIM SO HIGH jumped away awkwardly.

After the start when being restrained to take a trail, JESTACLOWN got its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

Apprentice A. Best, the rider of JESTACLOWN, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out resulting in POLAR WOLF having to be checked and relinquish its position. A. Best was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence immediately and expire at midnight on Thursday, 26 August.

After leaving the 400m DOONAN, when endeavouring to gain clear running, had to be checked to avoid the heels of BLACK SUIT.

The connections of DOONAN were questioned in relation to the horse settling back in the field further than anticipated. Jockey J. Byrne stated that after discussions with the trainer Mrs Page, he was of the opinion that from the horse's wide barrier draw and an abundance of pace from runners drawn on his inside, he felt that the horse would be better suited not being bustled early as he believed the horse would not have the pace of other runners drawn inside him. Therefore, he elected to ease the horse across and race on the rails, however due to several runners going forward he was positioned near the rear of the field. He added that after leaving the 400m, when endeavouring to obtain a clear run, the horse had to be checked to avoid heels, however from that point on, when clear, ran home well. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that DOONAN had a small laceration on the inside of the mouth.

G. Colless reported that GENGHIS KHAN was inclined to hang out in the middle stages of the race and compounded in the run to the finish. A veterinary examination of GENGHIS KHAN revealed no abnormalities.

C. Spry reported that BLACK SUIT got its tongue over the bit and he would recommend to connections that they experiment with a tongue tie.

RACE 5: QRSE CACHONDEO H'CAP – 2200M

KOHNRAY STAR blundered on jumping away.

After passing the winning post on the first occasion, SLEATBANK and KOHNRAY STAR became unbalanced when racing in restricted room inside MIDNIGHT AVENUE, which got its head up and raced ungenerously when taking a run to the inside of BLACK HULA which shifted in.

When leading near the 1800m SAILOR'S LARK was struck by a plover. A short distance later S. Galloway, the rider of ENABLER, which was racing on the outside of SAILOR'S LARK, was also struck by the plover.

SWEET INNOCENCE broke down near the 1400m and was retired from the event. The Club's veterinary surgeon reported that the horse had sustained a fracture of the nearside foreleg.

Near the 600m SLEATBANK had to be checked off the heels of JARROD.

Y. Yamazaki, the rider of JARROD, had difficulty fully testing his mount over the concluding stages due to it having a tendency to lay in, restricting the room of SLEATBANK.

RACE 6: SHOW H'CAP – 1000M

Stewards interviewed trainer Ms C. Ward and jockey J. Taylor in relation to an alleged misunderstanding in the engagement of a rider for POLYGRAM today. J. Taylor initially lodged a claim for a winning and losing rider fee, however informed stewards that he intended to withdraw the claim. Both parties were informed to ensure that bookings and acceptances of riders are confirmed and not open to misinterpretation. Following an incident in the weighing room after the interview, Ms C. Ward was found guilty of misconduct under AR. 175(q) and was fined $200.

SOVEREIGN EXPRESS jumped away awkwardly.

PANZER and CELESTIA were both slow to jump.

Near the 300m SEA ROVER was tightened between POLYGRAM, which shifted out slightly, and SEQUALITY which was inclined to hang in.

RACE 7: SUPER MINE H'CAP – 1200M

Shortly after straightening HUEY became held up behind the tiring PARALO and could not obtain clear running until near the 100m.

ZOOBINI and DREAM 'N' SCHEME were also held up for clear running until inside the 200m.

When questioned in relation to the disappointing performance of COUSY and the fact that the horse had to be hard ridden to maintain touch with the field in the middle stages, B. Stewart stated that from his wide draw he had endeavoured to cross STORM SCENE, however when racing close to that horse, made heavy contact with it and had to then take hold to relieve the pressure and ease his mount to take up a position nearer the rails rather than be caught wide. He stated that after having to ease his mount it dropped the bit and appeared to lose interest in racing. He added that he was obliged to ride the horse hard in the middle stages in an effort to keep the horse in touch with the field. COUSY was hard ridden for the remainder of the race. B. Stewart's comments were noted.

RACE 8: MAXAM H'CAP – 1400M

S. Galloway was examined by the Club's medical officer and stood down from riding. Z. Purton was substituted as the rider of EMPIRE STATE.

EMPIRE STATE and MRS. MORTY were tightened shortly after the start between CEDAR LODGE, which shifted out slightly, and WE CAN'T SAY THAT, which shifted in.

EXTREME RED and EMPIRE STATE were inclined to overrace rounding the first turn.

Near the 800m TEKWILA, which was pulling hard, had to be restrained off the heels of CEDAR LODGE.

GENERAL SAM was obliged to race three wide for the majority of the race.

Near the 400m TEKWILA shifted out taking EMPIRE STATE out on to GENERAL SAM and WE CAN'T SAY THAT.

MRS. MORTY had difficulty obtaining a clear run in the straight.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
