RACE 1: MR CROMWELL CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1200M
On straightening DREAM 'N' SCHEME commenced a run between RAFSO and SUPREME RIFFS, however near the 400m was momentarily impeded when SUPREME RIFFS shifted out slightly. S. Galloway reported that DREAM 'N' SCHEME was then somewhat hesitant to take a run inside of RAFSO until approaching the 200m.
After leaving the 400m ASIMBA shifted out to improve and brushed HUDDLE.
TWANGED was held up for clear running between the 200m and the 100m.
RACE 2: SIR SHAH 0MW F & M H'CAP – 1300M
MISS JONES and CROWN SILVER were both slow to jump.
DELICATA was caught three wide after the start and raced three wide throughout.
RACE 3: EL TWICE 0MW E & G H'CAP – 1300M
EXTRA LOOSE was slow to jump.
SHEER HELL jumped away awkwardly.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of TROPICAL EXPRESS, S. Katsidis stated that the horse travelled reasonably well until the 800m, however the horse then dropped the bit and when tested in the straight the horse failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as expected. Trainer J. McLachlan confirmed his disappointment with the horse's performance and indicated he would give consideration to easing the horse's preparation. A veterinary examination of TROPICAL EXPRESS revealed that the horse had sustained a laceration on the coronary band of the near hind leg and that the horse had pulled up short in its action.
When questioned as to the performance of SHEER HELL, S. Seamer stated that the horse may be looking for races over a longer distance. A veterinary examination of SHEER HELL revealed no abnormality.
RACE 4: QRSE POSITANO 2MW LY H'CAP – 2200M
WORKING CLASS MAN, which reared as the start was effected losing considerable ground, will be required to pass a further barrier test before racing again.
An inquiry was opened into A. Raby's riding of SAILOR'S LARK, in particular in the middle stages where she pressured GET IT GOOD for the lead. A. Raby explained that she had been given specific instructions to lead on the horse and allow it to roll along as the horse has not been racing as well in the past when positioned in the field. She added that after obtaining the lead the horse commenced to compound prior to the 600m and she felt that there may have been something amiss with the horse as she was of the opinion that the horse had shown in the past to be able to withstand pressure and normally shows good staying qualities. Trainer G. Livermore confirmed the instructions and also conceded that in his opinion there was something amiss with the horse, however as the horse had been in training for some time it was his intention that the horse would be spelled after today's race. A veterinary examination of SAILOR'S LARK revealed that the horse had a slower than normal recovery rate. During the course of the inquiry stewards also questioned S. Galloway, the rider of GET IT GOOD, in relation to evidence submitted by A. Raby that he had allowed SAILOR'S LARK to cross to the lead due to the pressure he received. After considering all evidence, A. Raby was given the benefit of the doubt as to whether she had taken all reasonable measures.
RACE 5: BENGALLA LAD QTIS CLASS 6 3YO H'CAP – 1200M
CRAIGLEA PATH was a late scratching at 10.05 a.m. for veterinary reasons.
STAMUS PRO HONNEUR was slow to jump.
AFLEET ZEPHYR jumped in at the start and hampered WATTAPITA which had been a little slow to jump.
Shortly after the start MOORALANA had to be eased to avoid the heels of PICAMELO which shifted in away from AMUSED.
Near the 900m HARD TO CATCH, which was racing in restricted room inside of MILLIARDAIRE, became unbalanced when MILLIARDAIRE crossed to the lead. Stewards acknowledged that whilst HARD TO CATCH had a tendency to lay away from the rails, G. Colless, the rider of MILLIARDAIRE, was nonetheless cautioned and advised to provide more clearance when crossing.
Also near the 900m MILADY CLANG had to be eased to avoid the heels of SMALL PLANET which shifted in and away from PICAMELO.
Making the home turn HARD TO CATCH shifted out slightly and brushed AMUSED.
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of MILLIARDAIRE, G. Colless and trainer R. Heathcote could offer no excuses and trainer Heathcote undertook to notify stewards of anything he noticed in the days following the race that may have had some effect on the horse's disappointing run.
RACE 6:QRSE GUNSYND 0MW H'CAP – 1000M
WIMAWAY was a late scratching at 11.20 a.m. when the vehicle transporting the horse to the races broke down.
J. Stanley, who was indisposed, was replaced on CALL THE HUNTER by S. Seamer; however as S. Seamer could only gain a clearance for four rides, approval was granted for G. Birney to take the ride.
ELABORATE jumped away awkwardly.
NITROGLYCERINE shifted in shortly after the start making contact with TEMPLE SPIRIT, forcing that horse in on to RUGGLES.
Near the 850m AUTUMN SHOWERS made contact with SAHARA MACA and then had to be eased to avoid the heels of CASHED IN which had received pressure from TEMPLE SPIRIT which was inclined to lay in despite the efforts of its rider A. Kennedy.
ELABORATE jumped the crossing near the 600m.
Stewards questioned S. Katsidis and trainer L. Gough as to the somewhat disappointing performance of SECRET GOLDMINE. S. Katsidis stated that the horse had been fractious in the barriers and then seemed to hesitate on jumping away. He added that his saddle shifted back slightly at the start and the horse was a neck slow to jump. He stated that the horse then travelled well until after leaving the crossing but was feeling the pressure of the race shortly after straightening. Trainer L. Gough was at a loss as to explain the disappointing performance and undertook to notify stewards of anything that may come to his attention that had any effect on the run. A veterinary examination of SECRET GOLDMINE failed to reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken from SECRET GOLDMINE.
RACE 7: TOP UNIT H'CAP – 1200M
KENCONCARNE was slow to jump.
KING'S COUP jumped in at the start tightening GRAMODALE GOLD on to MOTIVATE, which was slow to begin.
CANADIAN TIME was caught wide after the start and raced wide for the majority of the race.
RACE 8: MONTEZUMA CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1600M.
S. Galloway was notified as the rider of DUGAN DAN at 11.49 a.m. Due to J. Stanley's unavailability through injury, no penalty was imposed.
Near the 1400m DUGAN DAN commenced to pull hard and then raced wide in the early stages until assuming the lead near the 1000m.
IN SHANGHAI and DANARIA were both obliged to race wide throughout.
WHAT A GUY shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.
ALL WINNERS AND SECRET GOLDMINE WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
