Following the disappointing performances of FADE and DUKE SAM at Doomben on 12 October, trainer J. Wallace reported that he had a series of tests carried out on the horses and the results revealed that the horses were suffering from a respiratory disorder.
S. Katsidis complained of injuring his ankle in the barriers following Race 2 and after undergoing examination following Race 3 by the Club's medical officer, he was stood down from his remaining rides in Races 6, 7 and 8. Following advice from the doctor, S. Katsidis was also stood down from engagements on Sunday, 16 October. Stewards adopted the recommendation and advised S. Katsidis that he must provide a full medical clearance before accepting rides for next week.

The start of Race 2 was delayed slightly when PLACHUTTA required the attention of the farrier.
OARSOME was a late withdrawal at 1.17 p.m. acting on veterinary advice that the filly had sustained bruising on the inside of the near foreleg as a result of rearing in the barriers after being loaded. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on OARSOME be refunded, with deductions of 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets and 10 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets to apply. Connections of OARSOME were advised that a further barrier certificate would be required before racing again.

SIMPLY FANTASTIC (S. Katsidis) and JENNIFER ANN (C. Spry), which were racing greenly shortly after the start, made heavy contact.
Leaving the 900m PLACHUTTA (G. Colless) was cramped for room between BAREENA (J. Bowditch) and ANGLISIA (M. Palmer) when both horses shifted ground slightly.
Approaching the 500m GOLD EDITION (G. Lynch) shifted out abruptly, taking ANGLISIA and BAREENA wider on the track. A veterinary examination of GOLD EDITION revealed no abnormalities. Connections of GOLD EDITION were advised that a warning would be issued. G. Lynch was also admonished for leaving the jockeys room without authority whilst being required for a continuation of the inquiry.
Near the 300m PLACHUTTA shifted away from ANGLISIA and hampered BAREENA, which was racing greenly.

Leaving the 800m CRAIGLEA COWBOY shifted out when racing ungenerously and TOP GUN LANE had to be eased to avoid that horse's heels.

On jumping away SABRE KNIGHT (A. Merritt) was tightened for room between KUTALO (C. Spry), which shifted out slightly, and STARS O' GOLD (G. McKeon) which was taken in by KING'S COUP (R. McMahon).
NAVAL SEAL (J. Byrne) was inclined to overrace rounding the first turn.
TROPIQUALO (K. Cunningham) was obliged to race wide throughout the event.
After being disappointed for a run on straightening, STARS O' GOLD then had difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 200m.
When questioned as to the racing manners of KUTALO, C. Spry stated that rounding the first turn he attempted to restrain the horse to take a trail behind ALLEGRO SPRITOSO (M. Palmer), however the horse commenced to overrace and hang out. He added that KUTALO refused to settle and continued to hang out throughout the middle stages, and making the home turn hung badly, making contact with ALLEGRO SPIRITOSO and forcing it wider. As a result, GENERAL PATTON (J. Bowditch) was able to obtain a run through on the inside and ALLEGRO SPIRITOSO was again forced wider on the track. The connections of KUTALO were advised that a warning would be placed against the horse in relation to its racing manners and they indicated that they would consider removing the blinkers.

CHARIOTEER dislodged J. Taylor during its preliminary. When attempting to capture the horse, the Clerk of the Course's horse slipped, dislodging its rider. CHARIOTEER was withdrawn at 5.17 p.m. by stewards acting on the advice of the Club's veterinary surgeon. Following the late withdrawal of CHARIOTEER, all monies invested on the horse were ordered to be refunded in full and no deductions were made.
UVIDUS (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly.
Shortly after the start RIVER HUNTER (J. Byrne) commenced to hang in and approaching the 1200m shifted in tightening the running of PERSONAL LOOK (M. Palmer) and CHIPPY'S PICK (R. Pittman), resulting in both horses being steadied. As a consequence, STIPEND (B. El-Issa), which was following, had to be checked. RIVER HUNTER then continued to race fiercely until rounding the first turn.
Near the 900m BANNOCK BAY (S. Apthorpe), which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied off the heels of CHIPPY'S CHICK (R. Pittman).
MIKAN (B. Stewart) and HAMAH (R. Plumb) both experienced some difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.
When questioned as to the performance of RIVER HUNTER, J. Byrne stated that despite the horse overracing in the early stages, the horse had travelled reasonably well in the middle stages and after looming up to win in the early stages of the straight, the horse did not finish the race off over the final 150m. A veterinary examination of RIVER HUNTER revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
Apprentice R. Mason reported that COMMON KNOWLEDGE became unbalanced on two occasions when crossing to the lead near the 1200m.
