Race 1: Amstel QTIS 2yo C&G Plate - 1000m
1st – Astatus 2nd – Choose A Star 3rd – Hyde Park 4th – Saturn Five

On return to scale a protest was lodged by J. Byrne, rider of the 4th placegetter, HYDE PARK, against SATURN FIVE (B. El-Issa) being declared 3rd, alleging interference over the final 300m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards’ patrol film, stewards found that near the 300m, SATURN FIVE shifted out, impeding HYDE PARK. Stewards were satisfied, taking into account the nose margin between both horses at the finish, that the objection should be upheld and the Judge’s placings were amended to read: No. 1. ASTATUS – 1st, No.6. CHOOSE A STAR – 2nd, No.3 – HYDE PARK – 3rd, No.9 – SATURN FIVE – 4th. At a subsequent inquiry, B. El-Issa was advised to exercise more care in that he should have stopped riding and straightened his mount sooner than did.

Near the 300m, the saddle on CHOOSE A STAR (T. Pannell) rolled to the near-side, placing T. Pannell at a severe disadvantage and resulting in him losing his left iron and being unable to fully test his mount for the remainder of the event. Shortly after the winning post, T. Pannell was dislodged from CHOOSE A STAR. As T. Pannell was undergoing medical attention he was unable to weigh in, and acting under the provisions of AR144, stewards declared correct weight without T. Pannell weighing in. T. Pannell was examined by the club’s doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

A post race veterinary examination of FLASH ROMEO failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer R. Heathcote subsequently advised that after FLASH ROMEO returned to his stables the gelding was found to be shin sore in both forelegs.

Race 2: Hahn Premium Light QTIS 3yo Class 6 H’cap - 1000m
1st – Mr Heartbreaker 2nd – jive Bandit 3rd – Pelltro 4th –Amex Gold

CARDIO, which took charge of its rider when proceeding to the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon prior to the start and passed fit to race. When being examined, it was found that the hind bumper bandages on CARDIO had become loose, and they were removed prior to the start.

MR HEARTBREAKER (R. McMahon) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with AMEX GOLD (S. Galloway).

Shortly after the start, CARRY ON KOSA (M. Palmer) and RED WINE BWANA (A. Pattillo) had to be checked when tightened for room between SHOW STEALER (C. Spry) and CARDIO (S. Seamer), which after receiving a bump from JIVE BANDIT (K. Wharton) on jumping away, shifted out.

Approaching the 600m, GROWSIR (G. Colless) commenced to hang out and did so until after straightening. In this incident, MOSSTANG was forced wider by GROWSIR. A post race veterinary examination of GROWSIR revealed the gelding to be sore in the off foreleg. Trainer R. McCall was advised he must trial to the stewards’ satisfaction and he must obtain a veterinary clearance for GROWSIR prior to its next race start

Passing the 300m, CARDIO and JIVE BANDIT (K. Wharton) were momentarily placed in restricted room to the inside of the tiring ADMIRAL GHERKIN (A. Taylor), which shifted in.

Nearing the 200m, MR HEARTBREAKER (R. McMahon) shifted out to obtain clear running to the outside of RED WINE BWANA (A. Pattillo) and in doing so hampered PUSS ‘N’ BOOTS (J. Byrne) and AMEX GOLD (S. Galloway). R. McMahon, rider of MR HEARTBREAKER, was reprimanded.

AMEX GOLD (S. Galloway) raced wide throughout.

Race 3: Heineken 1mw H’cap - 1600m
1st – Bitofasmartie 2nd – Montoux 3rd – Easily Done 4th - Tattyam

OCTOBER SKY (K. Pope) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start, EASILY DONE (K. Forrester) and GRAND LADDIE (J. Taylor) were tightened for room between KANETOSHI MILLIONS (A. Spinks) and BESORAA (L. Morrison), which was taken out by MONTOUX (Michael Palmer).

A. Spinks, rider of KANETOSHI MILLIONS, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MONTOUX (Michael Palmer), which was taken in, tightening the running of ESKIMO DAN (A. Pattillo), which was severely crowded and lost its rightful position. A. Spinks was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 26 December 2007, and to expire at midnight, 2 January 2008.

Near the 300m, ESKIMO DAN (A. Pattillo) was obliged to alter course outwards to avoid the heels of REZONE (M. Hughes), which shifted in.

BITOFASMARTIE (R. Mason) was held up for clear running inside the final 150m.

EASILY DONE (K. Forrester) raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of OCTOBER SKY, K. Pope was unable to offer any explanation other than the horse did not seem to be its normal self and did not travel well throughout the event. Trainer K. Schweida stated that OCTOBER SKY was a stallion and had been in his stable since 1 March 2007 and, in his opinion, may have come to the end of its preparation. He further added that OCTOBER SKY would be sent for an immediate spell. Mr Schweida undertook to advise stewards of any abnormality which may come to light in the days following the race. A post race veterinary examination of OCTOBER SKY revealed the horse to have sustained a small laceration to the inside of the near fore canon.

Race 4: Tooheys Extra Dry Class 6 Plate - 1400m
1st – Ancient Impulse 2nd – Doug’s Mate 3rd – Showify 4th – Winsome Loot

TACT (C. Spry) and WINSOME LOOT (A. Taylor) were slow to begin.

Approaching the 1100m, BEARTRACKER (K. Wharton) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of WELL RESEARCHED (A. Spinks), which shifted in. A. Spinks, rider of WELL RESEARCHED, was reprimanded.

Near the 1100m, OUR JANGLES (K. Pope) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DOUG’S MATE (J. Byrne), which was taken in by SHOWIFY (G. Colless). G. Colless, rider of SHOWIFY, was advised to exercise more care.

Near the 900m, SANTI improved up onto the heels of MOSSO (J. Taylor) and had to be steadied.

Passing the 250m, DOUG’S MATE (J. Byrne) and SHOWIFY brushed.

WINSOME LOOT (A. Taylor) raced wide throughout.

Stewards questioned trainer N. Doyle regarding the riding tactics adopted on ANCIENT IMPULSE today as compared to its previous start. Mr Doyle stated that the instructions today were the same as its previous start, however due to circumstances at Doomben on 8 December the mare was unable to be ridden in a midfield to handy position as instructed. He further added that today with the mare’s light weight, ANCIENT IMPULSE was handier than he had anticipated. The explanation was noted.

A post race veterinary examination of SCOOT revealed the gelding to be making some abnormal respiratory noises. Trainer S. Mackinnon was directed to have an endoscopic examination performed on SCOOT after exercise and to provide to the stewards the results of same prior to its next race start.

Shortly after entering the straight, MR BACHELOR had to be steadied off the heels of NOBLE GENT.

Approaching the 200m, SEQUESTRATE (B. Pengelly), which was endeavouring to shift out to obtain clear running, was disappointed for a run between ANOTHERCAT (A. Taylor) and PRIMAL IMPULSE (B. El-Issa) where there was doubtful room and as a result had to be checked.
