Race 1: Karaman Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Cattleman 2nd – Malandrina 3rd – Once More Brother 4th – Strong Spirit
STRONG SPIRIT (A. Erhart) was tightened for room on jumping away between WORTH DOING (B. El-Issa) and DELTARARA (M. Hughes), which jumped outwards.
CATTLEMAN (J. Byrne) jumped inwards at the start and tightened MALANDRINA (S. Galloway).
BOY MAGICIAN (M. Palmer) jumped away awkwardly and missed the start.
After leaving the 700m, ONCE MORE BROTHER (S. Drake) was inclined to pull hard, and WORTH DOING, which was trailing, was hampered.
DELTARARA was inclined to overrace in the middle stages.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SILVER BLADE, G. Colless stated that whilst the horse was caught 3 wide, it did not finish the race off as expected and was at a loss to offer any other excuses.
The saddle on SWEED shifted near the 400m and the lead bag became dislodged. Near the 200m, the saddle packing was also dislodged. As a result T. Pannell, rider of SWEED was unable to weigh in at the correct weight due to the loss of the packing and lead bag, SWEED was disqualified from its 5th placing and the Judge’s placings amended to read: No. 3. CATTLEMAN – 1st No.11 – MALANDRINA – 2ND No.9 – ONCE MORE BROTHER – 3rd No. 1 – WORTH DOING – 4th. After inquiring into the circumstances surrounding the saddling of SWEED, no action was taken.
Race 2: www.qtc.org Maiden 2yo Plate - 1400m
1st – Lucky Omens 2nd – Yamarjie 3rd – Informant 4th - Lodging
MOON CHASER, which attempted to buck shortly after the start and lost considerable ground, will be required to trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before its next race start.
DON’T BACK DOWN (J. Holder) was tightened for room on jumping away between NKOSI’S HAVEN (M. Morris) and INFORMANT (J. Byrne), which jumped inwards.
DON’T BACK DOWN commenced to hang out after rounding the first turn and the horse continued to hang out badly throughout running. A post race veterinary examination of DON’T BACK DOWN failed to reveal any abnormalities. Connections were advised that the horse would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
A post race veterinary examination of BILINGA BAY revealed the filly have sustained a laceration to the off fore cannon.
Race 3: Scomeld Maiden H’cap – 1400m
1st – Zulu Man 2nd – Eternal Star 3rd – Lucyrox 4th – Alyssa Jean
ASHMA’S GOLD was declared a late scratching at 8.23 am. Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $200 for failing to scratch ASHMA’S GOLD by the prescribed time.
LEICA CROWNIE (J. Quinell) stood flatfooted in the barriers and refused to jump with the field. Connections of LEICA CROWNIE were advised that the horse must pass a further barrier test prior to its next race start.
PRETTY VEGAS (R. Wiggins) commenced to race ungenerously and got its head up after leaving the 1200m and continued to race ungenerously and hung out rounding the first turn.
Near the 1200m, BLACKAL had to be steadied when cramped for room by SOULGEN (M. Cahill), which shifted in.
Passing the 1100m, BLACKAL (S. Galloway) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ZULU MAN (J. Byrne), which shifted in. At a subsequent inquiry, S. Galloway stated that BLACKAL had commenced to race fiercely when being restrained to take a trail. J. Byrne, rider of ZULU MAN, was nonetheless reprimanded for failing to provide sufficient clearance when crossing.
Making the 1000m, SOULGEN had to be restrained off the heels of ALYSSA JEAN (M. Palmer) when the pace eased.
Approaching the 800m, ZHAY NAY RAHL (R. McMahon) also was inclined to race ungenerously at the heels of BLACKAL (S. Galloway).
BLACKAL was disappointed for a run between BLACKAL and ZHAY NAY RAHL (R. McMahon) leaving the 300m, and when both horses shifted ground slightly, BLACKAL had to be eased around the heels of ZHAY NAY RAHL to obtain clear running.
M. Palmer, rider of the 4th placegetter, ALYSSA JEAN, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish.
When questioned, R. Wiggins, rider of PRETTY VEGAS, reported that he had been instructed to settle the horse back in the field, however when caught 3 wide the horse refused to settle and raced ungenerously.
Race 4: Muros 3yo Maiden Plate – 1200m
1st – Shady Prospect 2nd – More Than Primed 3rd – Sweet Sassi 4th – Team Thunderstsone
GIRLS ALOUD was declared a late scratching at 2.08 pm. Following the withdrawal, all monies invested on GIRLS ALOUD were ordered to be refunded in full, and deductions of 23 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 18 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to bets laid above the line.
ALEXA DANE (M. Heagney) overraced rounding the first turn.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MACKUNDA, M. Cahill stated that, in his opinion, the horse did not appreciate being bustled in the early stages and that his mount did not respond to his riding after straightening. M. Cahill added he felt the horse may be better suited with race experience and a step up in distance without being bustled early. Trainer J. Wallace agreed with M. Cahill’s comments and was also of the opinion that MACKUNDA would benefit by not being bustled in its races. A post race veterinary examination of MACKUNDA failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 5: Innisfree Class 6 H’cap - 1000m
1st –Burdekin Blues 2nd – Lightning Brown 3rd – Ring Ring 4th –General Albert
Stewards charged B. El-Issa, rider of the 5th placegetter, CLYDE THE GLIDE, with failing to ride his mount right out to the finish. After taking into consideration B. El-Issa’s defence of the charge and reviewing the patrol films, B. El-Issa was given the benefit of the doubt and the charge was not sustained.
Race 6: Show Ego Class 3 F&M H’cap - 1300m
1st – Wheres’mine 2nd – Falvalady 3rd – Volitant 4th – Kin Kiss
SATIN BIRD (J. Quinnell), SEMINE (M. Palmer) and MANUKA HONEY (K. Purdy) were tightened for room on jumping away between SHESHEDA (K. Wharton) and HUNTALION (R. Wiggins), which shifted in.
MANUKA HONEY (K. Purdy) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BOUGETTE, T. Pannell stated that the horse travelled satisfactorily until the 600m, however when asked for an effort from that point the filly did not respond to his riding. Trainer K. Smith was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and undertook to notify stewards of anything that may come to his notice that may have had a bearing on the performance.
Race 7: Lefroy Class 3 CG&E H’cap - 1300m
1st –Deacon 2nd – Primeval Demand 3rd – Rock Slide 4th –Star Touch
AFFRONT (J. Holder) hung out shortly after the straightening and continued to do so for some distance until approaching the finish.
PRIMEVAL DEMAND (B. El-Issa) raced wide throughout.
Stewards questioned trainer’s representative J. McLeod and apprentice J. Quinnell as to the disappointing performance of PREDOMINATOR. J. Quinnell stated that the horse settled at the rear of the field, as is its normal practice, however PREDOMINATOR did not respond to his riding today and finish the race off as expected. Mr McLeod, also an owner, agreed that the horse’s performance was disappointing and advised that he would discuss the possibility of spelling the horse with the trainer.
Stewards questioned C. Reith and trainer D. Murphy as to the riding tactics adopted on DEACON today as compared with the horse’s previous start when DEACON finished 3rd on a heavy track at Caloundra on 13 July. C. Reith stated that on that occasion he had been instructed to ride the horse forward, however DEACON struck trouble at the start and as a result settled back in the field. He added that DEACON was not comfortable in the early and middle stages of the race on the heavy track and that it was only over the latter stages that the horse extended and finished the race off well. Trainer D. Murphy explained that he had instructed C. Reith to ride the horse forward again today and ensure that it was ridden aggressively. The comments were noted.
Race 8: Lyndhurst Stud Class 4 H’cap - 1500m
1st – More On The Toe 2nd – Media Fund 3rd – Chicken Bob 4th – Northern Man
ACADEMY PRIDE dislodged R. Wiggins behind the barriers and galloped for some distance. After being recaptured, ACADEMY PRIDE was declared a late scratching at 4.32 pm. Following the withdrawal, all monies invested on ACADMEY PRIDE were ordered to be refunded in full, and deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win and place bets were applicable to bets laid above the line.
WELL OF SOULS (J. Quinnell) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CRYSTAL SENTINEL, M. Cahill stated that the horse seemed to become agitated behind the barriers and sweated up as a result of the delay capturing the riderless ACADEMY PRIDE. M. Cahill added that the horse never traveled well throughout the race and ran home fairly. He also was of the opinion the horse may be better suited on a firm surface. Trainer M. Mair agreed the performance was disappointing today and undertook to inform stewards of anything that may come to his notice that may have had an effect on the disappointing run. A post race veterinary examination of CRYSTAL SENTINEL failed to reveal any abnormalities.
