STEWARDS PANEL: Mr J. Hackett(Chairman), Mr G. Ireland, Mr C. Clifford, Mr W. Birch.
WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD
RACE 1: WIVENHOE H'CAP - 1460M.
As apprentice T. Ono was unable to claim his full allowance, he was replaced on EDITOR IN CHIEF by S. Richardson. T. Ono was fined $100 for failing to claim his full allowance.
L. Appo was unable to make the weight on TRIANCHOR and was replaced by R. Goltz. L. Appo was fined the sum of $100.
PRINCESS ISIS, which was slow to begin, was tightened for room between SHOW 'EM THE WAY and MOMENT.
ANNIE THE BRAVE was also slow to begin.
EDITOR IN CHIEF was crowded for room shortly after the start when FERNY DESERT was taken out by JAROSLAV.
FERNY DESERT made the first turn awkwardly and shifted out, forcing HESSVEE across the heels of MOMENT.
When racing in restricted room on the rails making the home turn, EDITOR IN CHIEF made heavy contact with the hind quarters of TRIANCHOR, forcing that horse out on to SHOW 'EM THE WAY, which had to be checked off the heels of DANCING MAN.
SHOW 'EM THE WAY, which bled during the event, was declared ineligible to race for a period of 3 months. A swab sample was taken from SHOW 'EM THE WAY.
RACE 2: GLAMORGAN VALE H'CAP - 1200M.
M. Dale was unable to make the weigh on MISS LEHAAR and was replaced by A. Erhart. M Dale was fined the sum of $100.
MERVYN and WARNING SWITCH were slow to jump.
MERVYN blundered after the start and was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages.
MISS LEHAAR, which was inclined to lay out, made the home turn awkwardly and shifted out and having to be checked off the heels of DARK TILL DAWN.
TEAM BONDING was obliged to race wide for the majority of the race.
D. Evans and trainer D. Burns were questioned concerning WARNING SWITCH failing to race competitively in the early stages and being some distance from the second last horse. D. Evans stated that after being a little slow to jump, the horse lost ground despite his efforts and in fact was obliged to use the whip on a number of occasions in an endeavor to have the horse race with the field. Trainer D. Burns stated that the horse had developed a habit of losing ground early in its races, and that he would give consideration to removing the blinkers. He also indicated that should the horse continue to race in this fashion, he would review its current racing program. A veterinary examination of WARNING SWITCH failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 3: MAYOR'S H'CAP - 800M.
X. Smith was replaced on SHARFIRE by M. Spriggs due to being unable to take is full claim. X. Smith was fined $100.
As A. Pattillo was indisposed, he was replaced on PAUILLAC LASS by J. Sharp, CRAIGLEA FORCE by M. McDonald (Race 4), KOOCHIE by J. Sharp (Race 9), and CITICO by M. Rodd.
PRINCESS KINGDOM jumped awkwardly and lost ground at the start.
BOLD SIGN was slow to begin.
WARRIOR EXPRESS and WHITE BLAZE were tightened for room at the start between KALINGA PET and SHARFIRE, both of which shifted ground.
Leaving the 700m., GLADFAIR raced greenly and shifted in, tightening BOLD SIGN, which had to be eased off the heels of PAUILLAC LASS.
Near the 600m, PAUILLAC LASS, which was inclined to race greenly, shifted out, forcing GLADFAIR out on the to hind quarters of KALINGA PET.
At the 400m., SHARFIRE had to be eased away from the heels of GLADFAIR, which was racing ungenerously.
MAYNE DEGREE was inclined to shift in over the concluding stages, and shortly after passing the finishing line, AILEMA had to be checked when racing in restricted room inside PAUILLAC LASS, which was taken in by MAYNE DEGREE. J. Sharp ,rider of PAUILLAC LASS, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
J. Sharp reported that PAUILLAC LASS was inclined to race greenly throughout the event.
RACE 4: HARLIN H'CAP - 800M.
LOOK TO MONACO was slow to begin and lost considerable ground after the start.
COOROOMAN STAR was slow to begin.
BY DEFAULT jumped outwards at the start and made contact with SEQUALO PRINCESS.
Making the home turn, COOROOMAN STAR shifted out when racing in restricted room and made heavy contact with the hind quarters of CRAIGLEA FORCE.
Y. Yamazaki, rider of KID CHARLEMAGNE, was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the finish line, resulting in PLANAGRAM having to be checked.. SEQUALO PRINCESS, which was trailing, was also inconvenienced in this incident, however CRAIGLEA FORCE, which was trailing, struck the heels of SEQUALO PRINCESS when cramped by SQUIRTIE BOY.
SNIPPETY LASS was forced to race wide on the home turn.
B. Calkin was cautioned for failing to weigh in 5th on TIGER MAGIC.
Following the race, PLANAGRAM was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon, who reported that the horse had bled. In accordance with the rules, PLANAGRAM was declared ineligible to race for a period of 3 months, and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 5: LOWOOD H'CAP - 800M.
AWESOME FLASH was declared a late scratching at 1.10 p.m. when the horse underwent a veterinary examination at the barriers. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on AWESOME FLASH were ordered to be refunded, with deductions made in accordance with the Racing and Betting Act - i.e. 9 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets,10 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time.
WEST ANGEL, which sustained a laceration to its mouth at the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.
A protest lodged by B. Calkin, rider of the 3rd placegetter, QUIET SMYTZER, against WEST ANGEL being declared the winner, alleging interference at the 250m. was dismissed after hearing evidence from all parties and viewing the official video. In dismissing the objection, stewards were not satisfied that the degree of interference was sufficient to warrant a reversal of placings.
Leaving the 700m., ROCKY SPRINGS shifted out, taking PEDAL HAPPY wider on the track.
Near the 300m., OOCLES 'N' BOODLES was momentarily tightened for room by SEATELL, which shifted in.
Approaching the finish line, TEMPEL MASTER had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ROCKY SPRINGS, which shifted in under pressure.
SEATELL shifted out near the finish line and made heavy contact with ROCKY SPRING.
RACE 6: AUSTRALIAN FOOD CORPORATION QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
P. Spry was notified late as the rider of SPECIAL EFFORTS. Following an explanation from trainer P. Overell, no action was taken.
BUDDING ROSE jumped away awkwardly.
Near the 1000m., BUDDING ROSE was momentarily cramped for room between COOPER KING and ACAPULCO, which shifted in.
Approaching 700m., BUDDING ROSE ran up on to the heels of FORTUNAIR.
ELUSIVE DANE, which was tiring, made the home turn awkwardly, shifted out and had to be steadied off the heels of BERNY TO.
BUDDING ROSE shifted out on the home turn, taking BONNIE PAL out on to SAHARA SEA.
At the 200m., MISTER KOSTYA shifted out and made contact with COOPER KING.
RACE 7: 2003 MITSUBISHI SQ THOROUGHBRED RACING SERIES QUALIFIER - 1460M.
The start of this race was delayed when ALL BRASS made heavy contact with the running rail during its preliminary, resulting in the rail requiring repair. ALL BRASS was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.
After travelling a short distance, ACKDAK shifted out, forcing CHARIOT'S TIP to make heavy contact with KYM'S CONQUEST.
An inquiry has been opened into the reason for S. Galvin being dislodged from KYM'S CONQUEST approaching the 1200m.. At the inquiry, evidence was taken from J. Sharp, rider of CHARIOT'S TIP, J. Galea, rider of ALL BRASS, together with S. Galvin's master, trainer Mr P. Bell. The inquiry was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed to enable S. Galvin, who was transported to hospital, to attend.
After being steadied near the 1000m., SUNLADY shifted out abruptly, forcing CHARIOT'S TIP to shift out and make contact with the riderless horse. JHANSI KI RANI,which was following SUNLADY, had to be eased to avoid heels in this incident.
CHARIOT'S TIP was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
RACE 8: FERNVALE HOTEL QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
CROWN SILVER was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1000m., CROWN REGATTA shifted in, taking MARJORIE'S HOPE in on to PLAITED. S. Richardson, rider of CROWN REGATTA, was advised to exercise more care.
PLAITED had a tendency to overrace in the middle stages and on a number of occasions had to be steadied off the heels of WINSOME DANCER.
RACE 9: KING & CO ESK SHIRE CUP - 1200M.
R. Goltz was declared late as the rider of OUT BREAK. Following an explanation from trainer N. Petersen, no action was taken.
KOOCHIE jumped in the air at the start. KOOCHIE was then caught wide for the majority of the race.
JILLINA BLUE was slow to begin.
Near the 1000m., SAHARA COVET had to be steadied when momentarily cramped for room by STARS IN BARS, which shifted in.
SAHARA COVET was briefly tightened for room making the home turn when racing inside JILLINA BLUE, which shifted in under pressure.
Approaching the home turn, SPURWINGS was forced wider on the track.
M. Spriggs, rider of GOLDEN EYE, was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in approaching the 100m., resulting in STARS IN BARS having to be checked and alter course.
JILLINA BLUE bled from both nostrils during the event. The mare will now be declared ineligible to race for 3 months.
RACE 10: SOMERSET DAM QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1200M.
S. Galvin, who was involved in a fall in an earlier race, was replaced on HOT CHAR by D. Ballard.
Trainer S. Barling was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for COUGAREIGN by the required time.
Trainer Robert J. Armstrong was fined $100 for failing to scratch TYCOON ROSE by scratching time.
Shortly after the start, FLYING KWILA shifted out, taking MUSHOOD out on to JESTERS LAD, which in turn was taken out on to the hind quarters of BATTLER. BATTLER then shifted in and away from OUR BLUEBERRY HILL and this resulted in JUSTERS LAD being checked and losing its position.
HOT CHAR was inclined to race ungenerously near the 700m..
Stewards questioned C. Eaton and trainer L. Ross concerning the disappointing performance of FLYING KWILA and the tactics adopted. L. Ross stated that he had instructed C. Eaton to attempt to lead on the horse as the horse had been successful at its previous start on a heavy track when leading at Caloundra. C. Eaton explained that after being unsuccessful in her attempts to lead, the horse shifted out and was inclined to race greenly, being obliged to race 4 wide for the majority of the race. Trainer L. Ross stated that whilst the horse had risen in class and he was confident of its chances, he felt that the horse raced greenly today when unable to lead. A veterinary examination of FLYING KWILA failed to reveal any abnormality and L. Ross undertook to advise stewards of anything that my come to his notice in the days following the event that may have had a bearing on the horse's disappointing performance.
ALL WINNERS, SHOW 'EM THE WAY AND PLANAGRAM WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
