JUST AMAZON was a late scratching at the barriers at 12.59 p.m. on veterinary advice after the filly was found to have 2 deep lacerations in its mouth. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on JUST AMAZON were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 14 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time.

MR SNAPPY shifted in shortly after the start, hampering KING TUG.

BATTLER'S PRINCE jumped awkwardly.

ALL KNOWING and FORCEFUL LAD made heavy contact on jumping away.

Approaching the 900m., TRAMBURY'S TRUST was checked when ALL KNOWING, when racing ungenerously, shifted in away from CHIEF BRAVEHEART. ALL KNOWING continued to race ungenerously and near the 500m. shifted out, hampering DOWNTOWN MANHATTEN. ALL KNOWING again shifted out rounding the home turn when unbalanced. A veterinary examination of ALL KNOWING revealed soreness in the region of the back. Trainer P Bell will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for ALL KNOWING prior to its next race start.

MCKENZIE RED shifted out abruptly on 2 occasions after passing the 200m. when racing greenly.

G. Geran, rider of BATTLER'S PRINCE, was reprimanded for weighing in in excess of half a kilogram over his declared riding weight. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account G. Geran's good record regarding this matter.

Trainer S. Dwyer was fined $50 for failing to present STELLA BELLUS to the enclosure with the correct gear.

WARNING SWITCH was slow to begin.

M. Crawford, rider of ALBANY, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that near the 850m., he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of TRUE WHISPER, which resulted in TRUE WHISPER being severely checked and shifting out, making heavy contact with ROYAL FLYER. C. Eaton, rider of ROYAL FLYER and D. Griffin, rider of TRUE WHISPER, were both almost dislodged from their mounts in this incident. M. Crawford was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 10 meetings, to commence at midnight, 4 February and to expire at midnight, 16 February 2003.

After sustaining interference at the 850m., ROYAL FLYER was obliged to race wide for the remainder of the event.

RACE 6: JOHN OXLEY H'CAP - 1400M.
.
BLESED TYCOON and KINGCIDON was slow to begin.

When questioned regarding his riding out of BEST ASCENT over the concluding stages, P. Moodie stated that due to the gelding changing stride and shifting in close to the finish line, he was prevented from fully testing his mount.

RACE 7: LUDWIG LEIGHARDT H'CAP - 1400M.

HULAKAI jumped away awkwardly.

SAM'S APPEAL jumped outwards at the start and made contact with SHOW MARTIAL.

MAIZCAY MAGIC and IMPOSITION bumped on several occasions near the 600m..

TELINDA LAD was held up for some distance rounding the home turn.

When questioned regarding the somewhat disappointing performance of MAIZCAY MAGIC, trainer L. Ross was unable to offer any explanation other than the gelding had not raced for over a month, and that this was the first start for MAIZCAY MAGIC on Gatton Racecourse. He added that the horse may be better suited over more ground and on a more spacious track.

Stewards questioned A. Pattillo concerning the riding tactics he adopted on TELINDA LAD. A. Pattillo explained that due to the gelding drawing the extreme outside, connections had instructed him to ride the horse back in the field. He stated that TALINDA LAD had been ridden back in the field on previous occasions and in the race today the horse settled early and travelled well in running until leaving the 600m., where he elected to move to the inside rather than take a run wider on the track as runners wider and forward of his mount had been under pressure and were bumping. He stated that due to these runners being under pressure he elected to move to the inside in an effort to save ground, and despite being held up prior to the home turn, TALINDA LAD ran home reasonably well when clear upon straightening. The explanation was noted.

RACE 8: ALAN CUNNINGHAM

M. Smith-Lester was examined by the club's medical officer and stood down from his engagement on LYNCHIE. A. Erhart was substituted as the rider of LYNCHIE.

BOUNDARIES was slow to begin.

G. Geran, rider of CANALETTO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1400m., he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of EXPERIENCE, resulting in EXPERIENCE being taken in on to LYNCHIE, which was severely checked. G. Geran was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 1 February, and to expire at midnight, 13 February 2003.

Approaching the 1200m., LYNCHIE commenced to race fiercely and had to be restrained off the heels of OCCULAR.
