RACE 1 BETTS C DINN
RACE 5 KRUSTALLOS A ERHART
RACE 6 WINGS AWAY M PRIVATO
RACE 7 ST. COLUMBANS S SHIELD
RACE 8 WARRIOR KING M PRIVATO

As D KELLY was still currently serving a suspension for careless riding, Stewards permitted the following replacements:-

RACE 2 BACCHANTES K BELL
RACE 4 BROWN PRINCE M PRIVATO
RACE 5 BECKONING DANCER S SHIELD
RACE 6 BALCREST S SHIELD
RACE 7 THOMAS JOHN M PRIVATO
RACE 8 MARINE DREAM G DOUGHTY

At a later inquiry D KELLY pleaded guilty to a charge under AR8(e) for negligently accepting seven rides for today’s program which subsequently could have led to a breach of the rules due to his licence to ride in races still being under suspension. He was fined the sum of $200.

From Beaudesert Turf Club – 24 March 2000

P CUDDIHY was fined $50 for accepting a ride on IMPERIAL STYLE in the Maiden Handicap for Fillies & Mares when found to be overweight.

From Gold Coast Turf Club – 21 March 2000

Jockey C REITH was found guilty of a charge under LR161 in that during the course of a track work session that morning he submitted to a blood alcohol test which exceeded the prescribed limit. C REITH subsequently had his licence to ride in races suspended for a period of 6 weeks to commence midnight Sunday 26 March 2000 and to expire midnight Sunday 7 May 2000.

Registered track work rider T TRAVIS pleaded guilty to a charge under AR81A(iii) for refusing to deliver a urine sample when requested by stewards also during the course of a track work session that morning. T TRAVIS had his registration disqualified for a period of 6 months.

T TRAVIS also pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(gg) in that he made a false declaration by signing a sample security card declaring the urine sample which he supplied was his own which was found to be false. T TRAVIS had his registration disqualified for a further 12 months to expire midnight 21 March 2001. The stewards ruled that this disqualification be served concurrently with his other 6 months disqualification.

RACE 1 – PRONTO DIRECT MAIDEN PLATE – 1,200 METRES

EMERALD PRINCE jumped awkwardly and in the early stages continued to race greenly.

S SHIELD (ST. ANTON) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1,000 metres when not clear of GOLD DEALER causing that horse to shift in when not clear of EMERALD PRINCE which had to be checked to avoid GOLD DEALER’s heels and as a result shifted back out causing BETTS also to be checked. S SHIELD’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence Midnight 28 March 2000 and to expire midnight 8 April 2000.

Near the 600 metres CIRCO had to be steadied to avoid the heels of DUPE which shifted in when not quite clear. A COWIE (DUPE) was reminded of his obligations.

In the home straight both BETTS and MAKE A WISH had a tendency to lay in under pressure.

RACE 2 – PERFORMANCE DRIVING CENTRE (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES

As T DUCKETT was indisposed, Stewards permitted A BAKER to be replaced as the rider of ROMANCER.

LAMBADA QUEEN jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1,200 metres ROMANCER shifted in abruptly brushing THE SHOT which in turn shifted in and made heavy contact with OUR ANGEL.

Leaving the 1,000 metres EASY SPENDER which was over-racing had to be checked to avoid the heels of BACCHANTES which made contact with the fence.

On entering the home straight LAMBADA QUEEN had to be checked away from the heels of EASY SPENDER which was taken in slightly by GALLISSA when weakening.

Jockey A COWIE reported after the race that GALLISSA compounded in the home straight and appeared somewhat unco-ordinated in its action. A veterinary examination of GALLISSA revealed the filly to be showing signs of respiratory distress and was subsequently sent to be swabbed.

When questioned regarding the manner in which BACCHANTES was ridden today, Trainer G RYAN explained that he instructed Jockey K BELL to have the colt travelling in the first half of the field. K BELL explained that on jumping he rode his mount along to take up a forward position and from that moment commenced to race fiercely and as a result was obliged to go forward and lead. He also added that when his mount made contact with the fence near the 1,000 metres was due to him trying to steady his mount. Their explanations were noted.

RACE 3 – GOLD COAST BUSINESS WAREHOUSES & SELF STORAGE (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 900 METRES

On jumping MIGHTY BOMBER shifted out and made heavy contact with TOHESERA which caused that horse to shift out abruptly several horses.

J BRYANT (KAZAKHI GOLD) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for attempting a run inside the 200 metres where in the opinion of stewards there was insufficient room to do so and as a result made contact with MIGHTY BOMBER and almost fell. J BRYANT’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence midnight 26 March 2000 and to expire midnight 6 April 2000.

The club’s Veterinary Surgeon reported that MIGHTY BOMBER sustained a laceration over the flexor tendon of the off fore leg during the race.

RACE 4 – MOTORSPORT GALLERY WELTER (1,400 METRES)

PLANET ZAM was a late withdrawal at 1:54 p.m. on veterinary advice after that mare had sustained an injury to the off fore hoof. Prior to the announcement of ‘correct weight’ all monies invested on PLANET ZAM were ordered to be refunded with deductions of 25 cents in the dollar for a win and 25 cents for a place on the face value of the ticket on all bets made prior to the withdrawal.

RACE 5 – MOUNT COTTON GALLERY SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES (TWO-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

ADMIRAL’S LASS was slowly away.

KRUSTALLOS jumped away awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with CHIP OFF THE BLOCK.

Soon after the start MR. CHRISTEN and BECKONING DANCER were crowded for room between RED ROOM ROMPER and ARTIST’S TOUCH which was initially taken out by IL CENTRO GOLD.

Approaching the 800 metres IL CENTRO GOLD had to be restrained to avoid the heels of CHIP OFF THE BLOCK

For some distance leaving the 600 metres ADMIRAL’S LASS was unable to improve when held up for clear running.

Rounding the home turn IMPERIAL LANDING had to be steadied to avoid the heels of HAREBA JAY which was taken out by GATWICK EXPRESS when endeavouring to improve.

Near the 350 metres ADMIRAL’S LASS shifted out to improve and in doing so made heavy contact with CHIP OFF THE BLOCK.

Inside the final 200 metres ADMIRAL’S LASS (A BAKER) shifted out several horses under pressure. A BAKER was reminded of his obligations when his mounts had a tendency to shift ground.

A veterinary examination of KRUSTALLOS was ordered after that gelding finished a distant last. This inspection revealed no obvious abnormalities and in all the circumstances the representative for trainer B McLACHLAN was advised that KRUSTALLOS must compete in a barrier trial to the satisfaction of stewards before it races again.

RACE 6 – SIRROMET WINES (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES

From leaving the 500 metres until approaching the 200 metres PRINCE STARLIGHT was unable to improve when held up for clear running behind BOLD YEATS and SULIMANALU.

Approaching the 1,000 metres MR. SHERMAN was inclined to over-race and had to be checked away from the heels of BALCREST.

RACE 7 – CARRARA MARKETS (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES

ST. COLUMBANS and POWER PACK made contact on jumping.

On jumping MAGNIFIER dipped.

RACE 8 – JIM BEAM BLACK (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES

For some distance rounding the home turn ARBSCAY was unable to improve when disappointed for clear running between YOUNG BRAVO and DARCY DANCER.

Approaching the 200 metres ARBSCAY again had to be steadied when having difficulty in obtaining clear running between YOUNG BRAVO and MARINE DREAM.

Near the 50 metres M PRIVATO (WARRIOR KING) dropped his whip.

Stewards questioned S GALLOWAY as to the manner in which ARBSCAY was ridden today and he said that he was instructed to have his mount travelling third or fourth due to a number of speed horses in the race, however, after his mount missed the start he was obliged to take up a rearward position. He also added that approaching the 600 metres he elected to obtain runs to the inside rather than travelling three or four horses wide around the field to improve in an effort to ensure his mount was left with an effort at the finish. Trainer G RYAN gave the stewards an assurance that should ARBSCAY’s pattern of racing alter in the future it would be brought to their attention. Their explanations were noted.

EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH GALLISSA and GOLD DEALER.
