Trainer P McNEIL was fined the sum of $50 for nominating the 2 year old YABADABADOO for today’s open maiden, an event for which the horse was ineligible.
RACE 1 – AUSTRALIA Q IMAGE (CLASS 4) HANDICAP – 1,800 METRES
PLACID REIGN stood as the gates opened and lost ground.
RACE 2 – ALL SPORTS GYM (THREE-YEARS-OLD) MAIDEN HANDICAP – 900 METRES
JO MAC jumped away awkwardly.
COVET THEE also jumped away awkwardly and raced greenly and hung out throughout the event. Trainer B SUTTON was advised that a warning would be placed on the filly’s racing manners.
ON THE WEEKEND was slow to begin.
A short distance after the start HOT CYMBAL shifted in and crowded POP WILL on to DUKYLIKYLOO. POP WILL commenced to race ungenerously following this incident.
JO MAC when racing greenly blundered at the 700 metres.
Approaching the 600 metres SHE’S A KEEPER became momentarily unbalanced when racing in restricted room to the inside of SHATRI MAGIC which was inclined to lay in.
GIULIO was held up for clear running in the straight until approaching the 200 metres.
Approaching the 200 metres PACIFIC MELODY was momentarily hampered by HOT CYMBAL which was laying in under pressure.
A post race veterinary examination of ON THE WEEKEND revealed the filly to be shin sore in the near fore leg.
RACE 3 – GAINSBOROUGH GREENS MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
GWENIVE, BYTRAIN, IL PADRINO and SANZASHI were crowded at the start between NANJING and DEEPWATER WINE which both jumped awkwardly.
TANJENONG blundered shortly after the start.
APP. C LAI the rider of DEEPWATER WINE was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in approaching the 1,100 metres which resulted in IL PADRINO having to be steadied.
Inside the 800 metres ANOTHER DAUGHTER commenced to race fiercely when being restrained off the heels of NANJING.
Approaching the 700 metres GWENIVE which was also racing fiercely raced up on to and struck the heels of ANOTHER DAUGHTER.
Approaching the 200 metres NANJING was obliged to steady off the heels of THE OUTBACK RAT which shifted in under pressure.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of TANJENONG, A ABRAHAMS was of the opinion that the removal of blinkers today which was to stop the horse from racing fiercely as it did at the Gold Coast on 8 December, had an adverse effect in that TANJENONG at no stage today responded to his riding and raced disappointingly. He further added that it was his recommendation to connections to put the blinkers back on next start. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
A post race veterinary examination of ANOTHER DAUGHTER revealed the filly to have sustained lacerations to both hind legs.
RACE 4 – INTERNATIONAL WING CHUN ACADEMY (CLASS 2) HANDICAP – 1,400 METRES
SUNKEN was obliged to race wide throughout the event.
Rounding the home turn CAMPAIGNOR was obliged to momentarily steady off the heels of DOOLALLY.

PRINCESS ZENA and CAPSAN came together at the start.
Approaching the first turn PLEASING SEQUENCE raced up on to the heels of NORSE RAIDER.
Inside the final 50 metres BIG TIME ALLY was obliged to momentarily steady off the heels of NORSE RAIDER. Over the concluding stages IANANGER was placed in restricted room between NORSE RAIDER and PRINCESS ZENA.
RACE 6 – INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF SPORT JAPAN FAMILY DAY (CLASS 5) HANDICAP – 1,300 METRES
M GRAY the rider of KAAPTIVE DELIGHT was advised to exercise more care in future after shifting in at the 600 metres which resulted in ACHIEVE THE GOAL being hampered.
Rounding the home turn ACHIEVE THE GOAL was inclined to hang out and as a result was unable to take a run to the inside of KAAPTIVE DELIGHT.
App. C LAI pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) for permitting KING HIGH to shift in at the 150 metres whilst riding his mount along when insufficiently clear of LET’S GO NATIVE resulting in that horse having to be checked off the heels of KING HIGH. App. Lai’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings to commence midnight 30/12/2001 and to expire midnight 09/01/2002.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FRENCH TILT, A KENNEDY stated that his mount raced fiercely in the early stages and as a result he was caught in a three wide position for the majority of the event and further, that he accidentally dropped his whip after entering the home straight. These explanations were noted.
RACE 7 – AUSTRALIAN BLOODSTOCK AGENCY (CLASS 3) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
SHANKADI and BECKY’S TABOO were crowded for room at the start between BRANAHDAN and VIVID MISS which jumped inwards.
Approaching the 800 meters BECKY’S TABOO was obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of HEROIC PRINCE after racing up on to that runner’s heels. SHANKADI which was following had to be steadied off BECKY’S TABOO and as a result shifted in unbalancing FAST NEDDY.
Shortly after entering the straight VIVID MISS was accidentally struck by the whip of A BEST.
Stewards opened an inquiry into App. C PROSSER’s handing of BRANAHDAN in this event. C PROSSER advised stewards that she had been instructed to ride the mare quietly as opposed to its usual racing pattern where it is normally in a more forward position. App. Prosser further stated that she had got further back in the field than she had anticipated. Trainer G OSBORNE confirmed these instructions but did not expect the horse to be last in the field. Stewards acknowledged she was attempting to ride to instruction but in their opinion she had erred in allowing her mount to get too far back in the field bearing in mind that between the 700 metres and the home turn there was clear opportunity for her to improve and have BRANAHDAN better placed in a more prominent position to the inside of VIVID MISS at the top of the straight. Stewards also expressed concerns with C PROSSER’s lack of vigour in the straight and advised her of her obligation under the rules to fully test her mounts to the end of the race. Trainer G OSBORNE was also notified of his obligations to advise stewards of any substantial change in instructions as was the case on this occasion. A post race veterinary examination of BRANAHDAN revealed the mare to have sustained abrasions to the near hind leg.
RACE 8 – NIFSAN GOLD SEAL HOMES (CLASS 1) HANDICAP – 1,200 METRES
SANDURGA, KING SHALFORD and HEAVEN’S QUEST were crowded at the start between GRIZZLY SUPREME which shifted in and JOYOUS which shifted out abruptly after blundering.
Approaching the 1,100 metres KING SHALFORD commenced to race fiercely and threw its head in the air when being restrained off the heels of JOYOUS. At the same stage HEAVEN’S QUEST was also racing fiercely when being restrained off the heels of RYTHMIC CHIEF.
Approaching the first turn GRIZZLY SUPREME commenced to throw its head in the air while being restrained.
Leaving the first turn JOYOUS shifted out to avoid the heels of PERFORM and in doing so forced GRIZZLY SUPREME and FLYING AMY wider on the track.
Inside the final 100 metres DARK DESIRE shifted to the outside of the heels of OCTAVIAN to obtain clear running. As a result SAM’S GOLD was taken out on to HEAVEN’S QUEST. A KENNEDY rider of HEAVEN’S QUEST became unbalanced and dropped his off side rein and when attempting to correct his mount continued to shift out which resulted in PERFORM having to be checked after being tightened on to JOYOUS which in turn was taken in slightly by KING SHALFORD which was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages. Stewards could not be satisfied that any one rider could be held fully responsible for this incident but nonetheless A MORRISON rider of DARK DESIRE was severely reprimanded for shifting ground when insufficiently clear.
EIGHT WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED ALONG WITH TANJENONG.
