STEWARDS REPORT GOLD COAST TURF CLUB SATURDAY 9 AUGUST 2003

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr C Clifford (Chairman), Mr J Haigh, Mr D Tapsall, Mr C Waller and Mr S Hurford (Cadet)

WEATHER -FINE TRACK - GOOD

RAIL - OUT 6 METRES FOR THE ENTIRE


RACE 1: 11 DAYS TO CARLTON DRAUGHT GOLDMARKET H'CAP - 1400 M.

Trainer G. Osborne was fined the sum of $50.00 for not having the document of description in order for FASTNESS. Trainer G. Osborne was advised that the colt would be barred until the ownership papers are in order.

MAGIC CARAT jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

Approaching the 800 metres MAGIC CARAT shifted in which resulted in FASTNESS having to be steadied off the heels of ERGONOMIC.

K. Pope the rider of DISTINCT RHYTHM was questioned into the reason why he did not fully ride his mount out to the line. K. Pope stated that the horse had a tendency to run about throughout the event and when placed under pressure over the concluding stages the colt shifted out slightly. Stewards noted K. Pope's comments however reminded K. Pope of his obligation to try and fully test his mounts out to the line.


RACE 2: SMITH'S SNACKVEND MAIDEN H'CAP - 900 M.

DAILY PAPER was slow to jump.

SEQUALO LASS jumped away awkwardly.

R. Hurley the rider of MR. FLEXIBLE was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in approaching the 600 metres when not quite clear of COLOUR SERGEANT. This resulted in COLOUR SERGEANT making contact with the running rail and having to be steadied.

D. Tanti the rider of COUNTESS BATHORY reported that between the 400 and 300 metres his whip became entangled in the reins.


RACE 3: COFFEE ROASTER CLASS 3 H'CAP - 1200 M.

A. Morrison the rider of TOMATIO was fined the sum of $100.00 for being overweight. A. Morrison was subsequently replaced by A. Erhart.

HEAVEN'S QUEST stood flatfooted as the gates were released and lost considerable ground. Trainer H. Page was advised that a warning would be placed on HEAVEN'S QUEST'S barrier manners.

Shortly after the start SPANKSTER and MAINTENANT were hampered between OUR ANGEL and SKIMBLESHANKS (M. Bennett) which shifted in abruptly. Nevertheless M. Bennett was reminded of his obligations to take corrective action sooner than he did on this occasion.

Stewards questioned trainer R. Kirwan and jockey A. Erhart in regards to the disappointing performance of TOMATIO. A. Erhart stated that the horse never travelled well throughout the event and was always under pressure. Trainer R. Kirwan indicated that the horse had had a long preparation and it was his intention to spell TOMATIO immediately. A veterinary examination of TOMATIO revealed signs of respiratory distress. Trainer R. Kirwan was advised that TOMATIO would have to be scoped prior to its next start.


RACE 4: SODEXHO PLATE - 1300 M.

KING SIRRAH was slow to begin.

On jumping CLUB KEY shifted in and made contact with HYPNOTISM.

Approaching the 900 metres CLUB KEY commenced to overrace and had to be steadied off the heels of SOVEREIGN RUSH on a number of occasions.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by App. M. Spriggs the rider of LUNCHTIME LAD which finished third against CLUB KEY (M. Williamson) being declared second on the grounds of alleged interference from the 150 metres to the 50 metre mark. On the evidence it was established that leading up to the incident LUNCHTIME LAD had shifted in slightly and made contact with CLUB KEY and as a result both horses became unbalanced. CLUB KEY then shifted out making contact with LUNCHTIME LAD taking that horse wider on the track. In dismissing the protest the Stewards were of the opinion that LUNCHTIME LAD had initially contributed to the interference.


RACE 5: GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY GOLD COAST H'CAP - 1300 M.

TRENCHER was slow to jump and lost considerable ground.


RACE 6: COCO-COLA AMATIL H'CAP - 1200 M.

MURPHY THE SURFIE was slow to jump.

MOON JET had a tendency to overrace in the middle stages of the event and approaching the home turn had to be steadied off the heels of BREAKER'S WELLS.

App. D. Ballard the rider of POP WILL was fined the sum of $100.00 for returning to scale in excess of 1/2 kilo over his declared weight.


RACE 7: STUDENT GUILD H'CAP - 1200 M.

DEEP TOUCH which was kicked behind the barriers prior to the start was examined by the Club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

Leaving the 800 metres SILVER SUCCESS had to be restrained off the heels of COUNTESS MAXINE.


RACE 8: HEANEYS PERFORMERS IN PRINT CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1800 M.

AVANTE GARDE jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.

RISING SUCCESS jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the side partition.

Approaching the 1600 metres WATCH YOUR STEP which was racing ungenerously shifted out and then shifted back in making contact with MISS JONES forcing that runner in. This resulted in AVANTE GARDE which was following having to be checked.

Approaching the 1400 metres WATCH YOUR STEP continued to race ungenerously got its head up in the air and shifted in hampering SNOWY WEATHER.

Leaving the 600 metres RUSTIKOV commenced to compound quickly. RISING SUCCESS which was racing to RUSTIKOV'S inside had to be steadied off that runner's heels and shifted in taking WATCH YOUR STEP in onto THE COVE DIRECTOR which made contact with the running rail and had to be checked.

Approaching the home turn KENTUCKY THUNDER was held up for clear running behind RISING SUCCESS. At the same stage the tiring RUSTIKOV shifted in and made contact with AVANTE GARDE.

App. L. Fitzsimmons the rider of MISS JONES was fined the sum of $50.00 for returning to scale in excess of 1/2 kilo over his declared weight.



ALL WINNERS PLUS TOMATIO WERE SWABBED.
