Stewards questioned S. Galloway in relation to his apparent lack of vigour on MONALIESHA over the final stages of the race. S. Galloway stated that after being trapped wide early the horse did not feel comfortable and making the home turn the horse was inclined to hang out. He further stated that he did not test his mount due to him being of the opinion that there was something amiss with the horse. A postrace veterinary examination of MONALIESHA failed to reveal any abnormality. His explanation was noted.

B. El-Issa the rider of FOOLS RUSH IN was fined the sum of $500.00 for weighing out without his body protector. In assessing penalty stewards took into account the mitigating circumstances in that stewards were satisfied that B. El-Issa had not attempted to deceive the clerk of scales.

BURGUNDY PRINCE (J. Byrne) was inclined to shift ground under pressure over the concluding stages.
A postrace veterinary inspection of MASTER DENIS (G. Colless) which compounded over the latter stages revealed no abnormalities. Trainer A. Bailey advised stewards that he would consult his private practitioner to seek permission from the relevant authorities to have the horse scoped.
B. Guy trainer of BURGUNDY PRINCE advised that he would instruct J. Byrne to ride the horse midfield if possible as the horse had drawn wide. When questioned as to the reason why BURGUNDY PRINCE raced outside the leader J. Byrne stated that after being trapped 5 wide the pace slowed and he felt that at that point it was in the horse’s best interests to race outside the leader rather than race wide. Trainer B. Guy after viewing the film concurred and agreed with J. Byrne’s decision in preference to the horse racing wide throughout. B. Guy also indicated that as he was of the view that BURGUNDY PRINCE had not been finishing it’s races off he still intends where possible to have the horse ridden back in the field.

Near the 800m OVERANXIOUS got it’s head up and was inclined to race ungenerously and then shifted out taking MY FIRST AFFAIR (B. El-Issa) out onto ATHENA MANA MOU (J. Byrne) which had been obliged to race wide throughout. PAMALASHAR (T. Pannell) which was racing to the outside was also inconvenienced and raced wide for the entire event.
BRAMBLETYE raced wide throughout.
At the 400m MR BEANWATER had to be steadied when forced onto the heels of MY FIRST AFFAIR as a result of ROCK THE HORSES (J. Holder) shifting out to improve.
GLOGIRL (L. Cheshire) had to be steadied near the 100m when momentarily cramped for room by AUSSIE ROCK (A. Pattillo) which shifted in under pressure.
Following the disappointing performance of STEPPING STONES which pulled hard in the early and middle stages the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the horse was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia.
