SEATTLE DANE (T. Treichel) was slow to begin.

COBALT BLUE (App A. Holt) had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

Stewards questioned S. Thurlow the rider of DON PALERMO regarding the horse racing in a rearward position today in comparison to two of its most recent starts where it has raced in a forward position. S. Thurlow advised the instructions given were to race the horse in a mid to mid-back position, which he felt was consistent with the instructions given at Grafton on 15 June 2012. Trainer G. Yorke confirmed the instructions given to S. Thurlow and advised that it would be the pattern to ride DON PALERMO back in the field in future engagements.

SHESASTAD (M. Gray) began awkwardly.

COUNTRY MILE (C. Small) was slow to begin.

Rounding the first turn at the 1900m THE BIG BOY SINGS (T. Treichel) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SO SHARPLY (P. Timbery), which shifted in and away from SET TO ZERO (App T. Harrison). COUNTRY MILE and LEICA DIVORCE (D. Tanti) which were trailing were both inconvenienced and had to be steadied in this incident.

SET TO ZERO had a tendency to hang out for the majority of the event.

When questioned regarding the performance of KING OF FLORENCE jockey D. Missen was of the view that the gelding failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. Trainer P. Balzen agreed with the comments of the jockey but further advised it would be the intention to send the gelding for a spell. A veterinary examination of KING OF FLORENCE found no abnormalities at the time of examination.

Stewards further questioned trainer P. Balzen regarding the acceptance of the gelding for a race on 16 June 2012 over a distance of 1400m compared to the 2200m of today’s event and previous race starts over this distance. P. Balzen advised that he was unable to find a more suitable race for KING OF FLORENCE on 16 June 2012 and in his opinion was obliged to place the horse in the 1400m event. Stewards, whilst noting the explanation provided by P. Balzen nonetheless advised the trainer it would be expected that he would place the horse in all races that would allow it to be competitive.

Stewards questioned jockey T. Treichel regarding the seemingly improved performance of THE BIG BOY SINGS today compared to its last start at Coffs Harbour on 21 June 2012 where the horse finished 10th beaten by 9.5 lengths. T. Treichel advised that he was somewhat surprised with the horse’s improved performance today as the horse was most disappointing on 21 June 2012. He did add that for that race on 21 June 2012 blinkers were placed on the horse and it may have taken benefit from the gear today and the fact the horse had stepped up in distance to 2200m today. Stewards noted his comments.

SO SHARPLY lost both front plates in running.

Race 4: Surfers Paradise RSL Maiden H’Cap – 1300m

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on LOSE IT in today’s event, which saw the gelding race at the rear of the field in contrast to its most recent start on 11 June 2012, App A. Butler stated the horse did not begin as well as expected and as a result was caught wide and as such he therefore elected to restrain the horse to the rear of the field. Stewards noted his comments.

1st – The Middleweight 2nd – Magic Shuffle 3rd – Famous Cry 4th – In A Tangle

The saddle of THEGREATANDTHEGOOD shifted forward during the early stages of the event placing the rider at a disadvantage over the latter stages of the race.

Near the 1000m SLIPSTREAMS was crowded for room when racing between IN A TANGLE (D. Griffin) and RARE SUBJECT (A. Pattillo), which shifted in.

Race 7: Southport RSL Sub-Branch Fillies & Mares Class 1 H’Cap – 1400m

LADY MARY (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.

When questioned regarding the poor performance of LADY WHO, which after leading tired badly over the final 400m, App T. Harrison was of the view that the filly failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. Trainer J. Morrisey was also of the view that the filly failed to handle the prevailing track conditions as well as the fact that LADY WHO was backing up from an Ipswich run on 22 June 2012. Mr Morrisey further advised stewards it would be his intention not to race LADY WHO on a similar track in future. A post race veterinary examination of LADY WHO revealed no abnormalities at the time of examination.

Stewards questioned K. Wharton (LADY MARY) regarding the fact the horse settled at the rear of the field today, which is in contrast to the previous racing pattern of LADY MARY. K. Wharton advised that the horse was having its first start for the new trainer and as a result of gear changes designed to allow the horse to settle in its races it was expected the horse would be in a handy position however, the horse began only moderately and in K. Wharton’s opinion failed to handle the heavy track conditions. Stewards noted his explanation.
