STEWARDS REPORT
Queensland Principal Club (Downs & South West Region)
GOONDIWINDI RACE CLUB
Saturday 14th July, 2001
A pre-race inspection revealed that the racing surface was well prepared for the meeting. The Starter Mr Colvin tested the stalls prior to the first race.
RACE 1: Equator (M. Richards) dismounted to load. Pallance (D. Frahm) very restless in the stalls and jumped with its head in the air and lost ground. Coral Isle (L. McCoy) jumped out at the start and tended to lay in during the entire race. At approximately 60 metres after the start Sahara Zoff (P. Clarke) and Coral Isle on its outside crossed to the rails causing West Sun (W.J. Cook) to ease. Both riders advised to give extra room in future when crossing to the rails. Time off 1.40pm. Swab winner Coral Isle.
RACE 2: Awedad (W.J. Cook) slow to jump. Make No Mistake (J. Cuthell) raced very wide from 600m to the home turn where the horse moved in and brushed Count Yallah (P. Clarke). Just after the winning post Make No Mistake moved in coming into contact with Count Yallah. App. J. Cuthell cautioned for allowing her mount to shift in. Time off 2.15pm. Swab winner Make No Mistake.
RACE 3: Loud Thunder (D. Frahm) returned to the enclosure to have a hock boot fitted. On the home turn Majikarl (W.J. Cook) broke down badly causing Loud Thunder (D. Frahm) to come into contact very heavily with Majikarl's hind quarters and lose considerable ground. Majikarl sustained severe injuries to the offside front fetlock which included suspensory ligament rupture and bone damage. Majikarl was humanely euthanised by the Club Vet. Surgeon. A subsequent enquiry into the incident revealed that Majikarl broke down for no apparent reason and also Jockey W.J. Cook could not assist with any reason for the injuries. Time off 2.50pm. No swab winner Weeribee as Vet. Surgeon occupied with attention to Majikarl.
RACE 4: Tokyo Cut (D. McMaster) and Logan's Run (J. Cuthell) slow to jump. Trainer M. Hicks and App. J. Cuthell questioned as to the riding instructions on Logan's Run. Trainer M. Hicks advised that he asked App. J. Cuthell to ride Logan's Run quietly with a view to getting the horse to go to the line better. As App. Cuthell was approximately 12 lengths behind the second last horse and about 17 lengths from the leader mid-race, and then finished on to be beaten about 4 lengths, it was considered that she overdid her instructions and rode an ill-judged race. The video of the race shown to the Apprentice who was advised to keep her mounts closer to the main bunch in future. Time off 3.30pm. Swab winner Mr. Cash.
RACE 5: Dual acceptor Make No Mistake was scratched by Trainer M. Hicks at 3.00pm following the horse's win in race two because Make No Mistake had "got down" on his bumpers and had sustained superficial injuries to that area with some bleeding. In the best interests of the horse it was therefore withdrawn with full agreement from the Stewards. No reports from the race other than M. Richards' request to view the photo finish for 3rd position. Placings were correct and stood as posted. Time off 4.05pm.
Following an incident at the track on the morning of the race meeting, statements were taken from Trainer C. Hohn and Stable Foreman D. Judge and the matter referred to the Chairman of Stewards Mr S. Rowe.
