IPSWICH TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT SAT.28.6.03

STEWARDS PANEL: Mr A. Reardon, (Chairman), Mr J. Hackett, Mr G. Ireland, Mr R. Sanders, Mr W. Flynn, C. Waller (Cadet).

WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 1M. ALL TRACK


RACE 1: IPSWICH PAYER'S NIGHTCLUB H'CAP - 1100M.

Prior to correct weight being declared, apprentice Z. Purton made a request that BLUE PHARAOH be declared a non runner as he was he was of the opinion that the gelding was denied a fair start as his barrier did not open in unison with the other gates. Whilst stewards acknowledged that his barrier was slow to open, they were also of the view that this had not materially affected the horse's chances as provided in the rules.

DON'T TELL TOM and CLASSIC FRONTIER were slow to begin.

HOW HIGH SIR and KIND SPIRITS came together on jumping away.

Nearing the 900m., QUALO shifted in, taking HOT CYMBAL in on to SYDANEE, which had to be steadied. In steadying, SYDANEE shifted in, tightening the running of IN THE JUNGLE and DON'T TELL TOM, which brushed the running rail. Whilst stewards accepted that QUALO hung in, D. Evans, rider of QUALO, was nevertheless reprimanded for failing to make a greater effort to prevent this incident..

Approaching the 800m., BLUE PHARAOH clipped the heels of WEAISHE and blundered.

Nearing the 500m. QUALO made heavy contact with SOVEREIGN EXPRESS, forcing that horse on to the running rail.

Shortly after entering the straight, QUALO again shifted in despite the efforts of its rider and made contact with SOVEREIGN EXPRESS.

POTESTAS was held up from the 200m. until near the 50m..


RACE 2: QUEENSLAND TIMES H'CAP - 1666M.

TIMBER TYCOON and CORRETJA were slow to begin.

BISHOP BILL made contact with MATTSTAR on jumping away.

ROW BOAT was held up for clear running in the early stages of the straight.

Over the concluding stages, CRACKERJACK'S HOPE had to be steadied when tightened for room between TIMBER TYCOON and GREEN DANZIG, which was taken out by CORRETJA.


RACE 3: MCDONALD'S COUNTRY CUP - 2150M.

MAGIC TUMBLER was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 4: COLLINGWOOD PARK ESTATE PLATE QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M.

Approaching the 1200m., MISS GLORYHUNTER shifted out and made contact with CARRIER. CARRIER was then obliged to race 3 wide for a short distance, and when being steadied off the heels of MISS GLORYHUNTER passing the 1000m., got its head up. After this incident, CARRIER was inclined to race ungenerously.

In the early stages of the straight, KEEP A DREAM ALIVE and SHE'S VIVACIOUS were held up for clear running.

S. Seamer was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of HIALEAH STAR. He stated that the filly was inclined to hang out throughout the race, however when placed under pressure after leaving the 600m., the filly failed to respond to his riding. A veterinary examination of HIALEAH STAR failed to reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken.


RACE 5: HERITAGE RECRUITMENT GAI WATERHOUSE H'CAP - 1350M.

CALAWAY GAL blundered on jumping away.

KITNAT raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.

Near the 500m., IRGUNETTE shifted out to improve and made contact with MISS THUNDERCAT. MISS THUNDERCAT then shifted back in, resulting in IRGUNETTE being steadied behind DANART.

IRGUNETTE was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

Rounding the home turn, CONTINUOUSLY had to be checked to avoid the heels of the tiring KITNAT.

Approaching the 200m., IRGUNETTE improved to the inside of OTTAVIA and in doing so made contact with MAGIQUE SKY.

CALAWAY GAL was held up for clear running in the straight until near the 100m..

Close to the finish line, BRIDAL HILL, which was tiring, was tightened for room between DANART and MISS THUNDERCAT, which shifted in under pressure.


RACE 6: NORTHERN CITY FINANCE EYE LINER STAKES - 1200M.

CLAY SHAKER was a late scratching at 10.20 a.m. on veterinary advice.

SKEWIFF and FRISKY STAR were slow to begin.

Near the 900m., FEDERAL AGENT was inclined to lay in and away from KATENIAN and as a result tightened the running of SKEWIFF.

SKEWIFF was held up for clear running rounding the home turn behind FEDERAL AGENT.

Shortly after entering the straight, SKEWIFF then hung in under pressure and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of FEDERAL AGENT.

A veterinary examination of PITTANCE following the event revealed the gelding had broken down in the near fore fetlock.


RACE 7: XXXX IPSWICH CUP - 2150M.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion, PAGANO had to be steadied when briefly tightened for room by VICTORY SMILE, which was taken in slightly by KUGELHOPF.

M. Rodd, rider of MON MEKKI, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift out approaching the 600m., taking SILVER GHOST out, which resulted in SAILOR'S LARK, which was improving to that horse's outside being checked. M. Rodd was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings. M. Rodd was also fined $1000.

M. Rodd, rider of MON MEKKI, pleaded guilty to a further charge of careless riding, in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 100m. when not clear of JETSKIWI, which was taken in on to KUGLEHOPF, which in turn made contact with the hind quarters of VICTORY SMILE, resulting in KUGELHOPF and JETSKIWI having to be steadied. M. Rodd was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings and was also fined $1000. Stewards ordered that the 7 meeting suspension issued on the first charge be served concurrently with the 8 meeting suspension issued on this charge, to commence at midnight, 29 June 2003 and to expire at midnight, 13 July 2003.

At the 650m., MOTIVATE improved quickly and had to be checked off the heels of STORMY LODGE.

Passing the 500m., ANOTHER WARRIOR was tightened for room between PAGANO and SAILOR'S LARK,which shifted in when tiring.

Making the home turn, MOTIVATE and SIR KINDLE were held up for clear running.

Near the 200m., MOTIVATE had to be checked off the heels of AWESOME WEATHER.

SIR KINDLE was disappointed for a run between LAURINEL IMPULSE and VICTORY RANGER near the 200m.

Trainer J.R. Hawkes' representative Mr Michael Hawkes was questioned regarding the improved performance of MOWERMAN as compared with its performance at Eagle Farm on 21 June when the gelding finished 12th. Mr Hawkes stated on that occasion the gelding overraced when pressured for the lead and weakened over the concluding stages. He added that the same instructions were issued to J. Taylor today and MOWERMAN was able to lead comfortable without being pressured. The explanation was noted.

The club's veterinary surgeon reported that VICTORY RANGER had sustained a small puncture wound on the inside of the near fore cannon.


RACE 8: SCHWEPPES QTIS ADDED STAKES H'CAP - 1350M.

CROWN SILVER and ENA'S PRIDE were slow to begin.

After leaving the 800m., LAMOND shifted in, tightening the running of YEAZOFF, which was taken in on to PAPER KINGS, which became unbalanced. A short distance later, PAPER KINGS shifted out from behind the heels of DIFFICULT, resulting in YEAZOFF being further hampered. Whilst stewards accepted that there had been movement from the inside runner, J. Powell, rider of LAMOND, was nevertheless advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.

G. Colless, rider of BRITISH LION, reported that his saddle shifted to the offside near the 700m., placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.

SHOW BIZ KID shifted in near the 200m., taking SUPER ENTRÉE in on to TELLEM.

JARABU was obliged to race wide throughout the event.

A veterinary examination of ENA'S PRIDE failed to reveal any abnormality.

ALL WINNERS AND HIALEAH STAR WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
