9.5 REMAINDER
RACE 1: WESTERN SUBURBS LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 H'CAP - 1350M.
SUTTON DANCER and ON BLU BAYOU jumped awkwardly.
P. Hammersley was dislodged from PENNY ASH during the preliminary when that mare reared over and made contact with the inside running rail. PENNY ASH was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare had pulled up in a distressed state. Stable foreman B. Hill was advised that he must obtain a veterinary clearance for PENNY ASH prior to its next race start.
CRAIGLEA DANCER and APPEALING LADY, which refused to parade, were withdrawn at 12.25 p.m.. Subsequent to the event, all monies invested on CRAIGLEA DANCER and APPEALING LADY were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 3 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 4 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets, applicable to successful wagers placed prior to the withdrawal time. Trainer M. Wilson was advised that a warning would be placed on APPEALING LADY regarding its pre-race manners. Trainer K. Pattillo was advised that CRAIGLEA DANCER must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to its next race start.
RACE 2: BOB & PAT KOHUT H'CAP - 1350M.
As M. Pelling was indisposed, G. Colless was substituted as the rider of POKING AROUND, C. Whiteley as the rider of GEDA DEE JAY (Race 5) and J. Powell as the rider of KINETIC KING (Race 8).

KINCIDON jumped away awkwardly and made heavy contact with the side partition, which resulted in A. Gain's left foot becoming dislodged from the stirrup iron. When questioned, A. Gain explained that that a short distance later he removed his right foot from the stirrup iron when he was unable to regain the use of his near-side iron. Whilst stewards noted A. Gain's explanation, he was nonetheless advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to regain the use of his iron.
J. Powell, rider of ZEDSQUARE, reported that as A. Gain was experiencing difficulty having lost the use of his irons, he eased his mount after leaving the 1000m. to enable A. Gain to move to the outside. In this incident, ZEDSQUARE lost ground.
RACE 3: PETER & JO MCILWAIN H'CAP - 1025M.
WICKED WAYS, which was kicked on the off-side chest behind the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.
DONA GRACIA was slow to begin and lost ground.
EVENING EXPRESS and WICKED WAYS made contact on jumping away.
Approaching the first turn, BAILIFF had to be steadied when EVENING EXPRESS shifted in.
JOLLY JESSICA was obliged to race wide for the majority of the event.
CRAIGLEA HEAVEN had a tendency to lay out after entering the straight.
RACE 4: EDDIE & DENISE REDFERN H'CAP - 1025M.
Passing the 500m., ACHARCAY shifted out, and a short distance later shifted back in of its own accord, which resulted in PENTHOUSE VIEW having to be steadied.
RACE 5: CAROL & MIGUEL XAVIER H'CAP - 1025M.
ALTAO, which was slow to jump, was hampered between TEMPESTES and DANE SHAKIRA, both of which shifted ground.
Passing the 500m., CLARE BOUNTY shifted out, hampering SNIPPETY LASS.
Approaching the home turn, TEMPESTES was held up for clear running and had to be steadied off the heels of LIGHTNING ROUGE.
LIGHTNING ROUGE was held up for clear running approaching the turn to near the 300m., when the mare had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring SNIPPETY LASS.
When questioned regarding the performance of SNIPPETY LASS, apprentice M. Spriggs stated he was instructed to ride forward and try to lead from its good barrier, however he was unable to cross to the fence and was obliged to race to the outside of CLARE BOUNTY from the 800m. until the 400m.. He added that when travelling outside of CLARE BOUNTY, SNIPPETY LASS became unbalanced and was reluctant to stride forward after making contact with that filly on 2 occasions. M. Spriggs further explained that when placed under further pressure, the mare failed to respond to his riding and did not finish the race off as expected. M. Spriggs' comments were noted. A veterinary examination of SNIPPETY LASS following the event revealed the mare to be in a distressed condition and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 6: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JA9 H'CAP - 1025M.
N. Day, rider of LOADED VICE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 800m. he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of MERVYN, which in turn shifted in, resulting in SET TO FIRE having to be checked.. N. Day was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 9 November and to expire at midnight, 23 November 2003.
RACE 7: GALVIN'S LANDSCAPING H'CAP - 1350M.
Trainer M. Lewis and jockey M. Lister were questioned regarding the riding tactics adopted on MERV'S WISH. M. Lister stated he was instructed to go forward from the start and to be handy in the early and middle stages. He added however the gelding was reluctant to stride forward and he was obliged to use the whip on a number of occasions to urge MERV'S WISH forward, although with little response. M. Lister further added that MERV'S WISH commenced to race from the 800m.and was then held up on the home turn before finishing the race off well. M. Lister could offer no other excuse for MERV'S WISH'S reluctance to race after the start. Trainer M. Lewis confirmed the instructions given, but could offer no reason for the performance of MERV'S WISH today. The comments were noted.
A veterinary examination of ENA'S PRIDE, which finished last, failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 8: COUNTRY TURF SUPPLIES H'CAP - 1350M.
LORD MAPLE jumped away awkwardly and lost considerable ground.
CHIEFODEON was slow to jump.
Approaching the home turn, SWEEP OUT shifted out to improve, obliging INVERSE RATIO, MR HORSEPOWER and RATIO to race wider on the track.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of KINETIC KING, J. Powell stated that he had to work hard to obtain the lead and, in his opinion, the gelding does not race at its best when placed under pressure in the early and middle stages as it failed to run on in today's event. J. Powell's comments were noted. A subsequent veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.
When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of MR HORSEPOWER, S. Katsidis stated that he was obliged to race in a wide position throughout, and the gelding had a tendency to hang in, and, in his opinion, proved disappointing. S. Katsidis's comments were noted. A veterinary examination of MR HORSEPOWER failed to reveal any abnormality.
ALL WINNERS AND SNIPPETY LASS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
