Race 1: Channel 7 Maiden H'cap – 800m

The start was delayed when both SHE HAS THE MOVES (L. Cassidy) and JIMMY DARLIN' (D. Green) became fractious in the barriers. After undergoing veterinary examinations, both horses were cleared to start.

MAGNIFY (S. Bogenhuber) began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with MOOLAH MISS (M. O’Brien).

Leaving the 400m, MAGNIFY had to be momentarily steadied when crowded for room by MAN OF COURAGE (N. Yamada), which was inclined to hang in.

JIMMY DARLIN' (D. Green) hung out rounding the home turn and shifted wider on the track.

MOOLAH MISS hung in when placed under pressure in the home straight.

N. Yamada, rider of the winner, MAN OF COURAGE, was advised of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.

When questioned regarding the performance of JIMMY DARLIN', trainer D. Cowley stated she was very disappointed with the gelding's performance and would now give consideration to the immediate racing future of JIMMY DARLIN'. Miss Cowley was advised that a warning would be placed on JIMMY DARLIN' regarding its uncompetitive performance today.

Race 2: Terry Neale Memorial Class 2 H'cap – 800m

ADENARIUS (A. Butler) began awkwardly.

STANDOVER (N. Tomizawa) shifted out at the start, making contact with CAPTAIN SPUR (C. Spry).

Leaving the 600m, CAPTAIN SPUR commenced to overrace and near the 500m had to be restrained from the heels of STANDOVER (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in when being steadied.

When questioned regarding the performance of CAPTAIN SPUR, rider C. Spry reported that, in his opinion, the horse was not comfortable in today's track conditions. He added that after being steadied leaving the 600m, the gelding raced further back than he anticipated and was then held up rounding the home turn. Jockey Spry further stated however that once balanced in the home straight CAPTAIN SPUR found the line strongly and, in his view, would be better suited to distances longer than that of today's race.

B. Ainsworth, rider of LITTLE RIP SNORTER, was given the opportunity to comment on the mare's performance today. Miss Ainsworth stated that whilst being held together in the early and middle stages, LITTLE RIP SNORTER travelled well in the lead, however once place under pressure was not comfortable in the conditions and as a result compounded over the concluding stages. Trainer Mr S. Essery agreed with Miss Ainsworth's assessment and was disappointed with today's performance and in view of this the mare would be sent for an immediate spell.

AMAZING FATE lost its near fore plate in running.

NOSUBFORLUCK (T. Harrison) blundered on 2 occasions of its own accord near the 800m.

Stewards questioned T. Harrison, rider of NOSUBFORLUCK, in relation to the tactics adopted in the early and middle stages of the race. Miss Harrison explained that from the wide barrier the horse settled back in the field, which it did at its previous start, and due to it racing greenly she endeavoured to have it balanced in running and waited until straightening before placing NOSUBFORLUCK under pressure. She further stated that, in her opinion, the gelding will be better suited over distances longer than that of today's event. Trainer Mr P. Duncan advised that whilst there were no specific instructions given he was not concerned when the horse raced back in the field as that was how it raced in its only start. He added that NOSUBFORLUCK was still very green, and also of the opinion that the horse will be suited over longer races. Mr Duncan further advised that it was now his intention NOSUBFORLUCK be sent for a spell and allowed to mature more. Stewards also noted that NOSUBFORLUCK was slightly inconvenienced near the 150m when tightened for room when racing between LIKE THIS (A. Taylor) and RED SNIP (G. Colless), which shifted in. Whilst noting the explanations of both Mr Duncan and apprentice Harrison, stewards were nevertheless of the opinion apprentice Harrison had erred in not placing her mount under more pressure leaving the 600m and earlier in the home straight than she did. Miss Harrison was also advised to ensure she rides her mounts in a manner which does not leave her tactics open to question.

Race 5: Max Standfield Memorial Class 2 H'cap – 1350m

Ainsworth was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 27 January and to expire at midnight, 9 February.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of LUCKY ELITE, L. Cassidy, who also rode the gelding at its previous start, stated that the gelding did not perform well on the hard track surface on that occasion, and that all its better form has been on rain affected surfaces. Trainer L. Kelly agreed with jockey Cassidy's assessment, and further advised that LUCKY ELITE has had issues with its hooves racing on the recent hard surfaces, and whilst hopeful of an improved performance on the rain affected track today, he was nevertheless not overly confident. Stewards noted their explanations.

Permission was granted for trainer L. Kelly to remove the hoof pads on DESTINY ROAD due to the heavy conditions.

Leaving the 1500m, SILVER RIVER shifted in and away from PLAY LUCK (J. Johnson), despite the efforts of its rider, R. McMahon, tightening the running of both THE CAVALRY (C. Munce) and DESTINY ROAD (L. Cassidy). SILVER RIVER continued to hang in and near the 1400m and again tightened the running of THE CAVALRY and DESTINY ROAD.

SILVER RIVER raced 3 wide until a point approaching the 800m, at which stage R. McMahon allowed the gelding to stride forward to a position racing one off the fence.

When questioned, C. Munce was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance of THE CAVALRY. He stated leaving the 600m he placed the gelding under pressure, however it failed to respond to his riding and was very disappointing. Trainer T. Green expressed his disappointment in the performance and was of the opinion THE CAVALRY may not have backed up from its run last week on today's heavy track surface, and it was his intention now to send the horse for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of THE CAVALRY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7: Kevin Keidge Memorial CG&E Class 1 H'cap - 1200m

BUCKSHOT (J. Taylor) began very awkwardly and lost considerable ground and then was uncompetitive throughout the race despite the efforts of its rider, J. Taylor. Trainer Mr C. Howell was at a loss to explain the performance today and advised he would review the horse's current preparation. B. Stewart, rider of DAME DESTINY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that at approximately the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of PARAFIRE (N. Tomizawa), making contact with that horse, which was in turn taken in, making heavy contact with WILDWOOD OAKS, which was severely checked and lost considerable ground. In this incident, PARAFIRE also lost ground. Jockey Stewart was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 1 February and to expire at midnight, 13 February.

PARAFIRE (N. Tomizawa) blundered near the 400m.

When questioned into the performance of PARAFIRE, N. Tomizawa was unable to offer any tangible explanation other than the horse felt awkward in its action and as a result he elected to ease the horse out of the race. A post race veterinary examination of PARAFIRE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities, and stable representative Mr Peter Gollogly was advised that PAREFIRE must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to being permitted to race again.
