CONTRACTUAL (App A Taylor) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.
AERO LASS (App D Carrigg) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.
LAND SHARK ( D Evans) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Race 2: MILNE BROS EQUIPMENT CLASS 3 PLATE – 1400M.
1st – SPRING BLITZ 2nd – ONLY A FLING 3rd – REAF SHAR BAYE 4th – CAN GO
TIMBERS (W Morris) and MICHAELWIN (App D Carrigg) were tightened for room at the start between SPIN TWINS (App M Radecker) which jumped out and CLOSED OUT (N Evans) which jumped inwards.
MERDEX (M Barnham) was tightened for room at the start between CAN GO (App A Coome) and REAF SHAR BAYE (C Whiteley) which jumped inwards.
DECEIVING (App C McIver) jumped inwards at the start making contact with SPRING BLITZ (App P Randall).
Approaching the 1100m CAN GO (App A Coome) commenced to over race and became awkward on the heels of CLOSED OUT (N Evans) when the pace steadied and as a result shifted out making contact with REAF SHAR BAYE (C Whiteley) for a short distance which shifted in slightly and was unable to relieve the pressure due to DECIEVING (App C McIver) having a tendency to lay in. As stewards were of the opinion that no one rider was to blame no further action was taken.
ONLY A FLING (N Day) was crowded for room near the 1100m by MICHAELWIN (App D Carrigg) which shifted in and away from SPRING BLITZ (App P Randall).
On returning to scale a protest was lodged by N Day, rider of 2nd placegetter, ONLY A FLING, against SPRING BLITZ (App P Randall) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the official video, stewards found that SPRING BLITZ had shifted in inconveniencing ONLY A FLING in the close proximity of the winning post. Stewards could not be satisfied that the interference so close to the finish line warranted a reversal of placings and the protest was dismissed and correct weight notified on the judges semaphored numbers.
When questioned into the improved performance of SPRING BLITZ, S Graham, the trainer of that runner stated that at the horses previous run the gelding had raced in the lead due to its wide barrier which may not have suited the horse and further that the horse did not appreciate the track surface which was rated dead on that day and was better suited being back on a good rated track today and racing off the speed was more beneficial to horse, she further added it would be her intention to have SPRING BLITZ ridden in a similar fashion in future. Stewards noted her explanation.
P Randall, the rider of SPRING BLITZ, was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137 (a) in that approaching the winning post he permitted his mount to shift in and continued to shift in after passing the winning post when insufficiently clear of ONLY A FLING (N Day) causing that runner to shift in which inturn forced REAF SHAR BAYE (C Whiteley) to steady and shift in resulting in CAN GO (App A Coome) to be checked and make contact with the inside running rail. P Randall’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of nine Queensland race meetings to commence at midnight, Saturday 31st March 2007 up to and including midnight, Saturday 14th April 2007.
