Race 1: PELICAN MOTORS SERVICE CENTRE MAIDEN H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Fragar 2nd – Red Magic 3rd – Shouta Command 4th – Taira
The start of this race was delayed when DON’T DEFIER became fractious in the barriers. DON’T DEFIER was examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently declared a late scratching at 12.10 p.m. on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on DON’T DEFIER be refunded, with deductions of 16 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 14 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply. Connections were advised that a veterinary certificate would be required for DON’T DEFIER prior to its next start.
KING ECHELON (D. Missen) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
MAGIC RED (T. Huxham) was slow to begin.
Shortly after the start MASTER LAMBADA (M. Gray) had to be steadied when tightened for room between KING ECHELON and SHOUTA COMMAND (Matthew Palmer) which shifted in.
Near the 1200m SIR SCOOTER (K. Fuji) was forced to steady when tightened for room between JUSSA WOMANN (W. D'Avila) and TAIRA (M. Reuben) which shifted in and away from KING ECHELON despite the efforts of its rider.
KING ECHELON raced wide during the early stages.
MASTER LAMBADA raced wide throughout.
Leaving the 900m TAIRA became awkward and was forced to steady when tightened for room between ON THE LIFFEY (A. Pattillo) and MASTER LAMBADA which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. MAGIC RED, which was following, was forced to check to avoid the heels of MASTER LAMBADA. As a result of this incident MAGIC RED shifted wider on the track and commenced to improve into the race.
Approaching the 800m JUSSA WOMANN improved on to the heels of ACTON GIRL (M. Hughes) and had to be steadied.
TAIRA had difficulty obtaining clear running during the early stages of the home straight.
Over the concluding stages JUSSA WOMANN, MOON LADY (J. Kropp) and ON THE LIFFEY were tightened for room and had to be steadied when racing to the inside of TAIRA which shifted in to obtain clear running. Jockey M. Reuben, the rider of TAIRA, was severely reprimanded for this incident.
ON THE LIFFEY (A. Pattillo), which hung in throughout the event, was found to be lame in off hind leg upon veterinary examination post-race. Trainer J. Fitzgerald was advised to furnish a veterinary certificate prior to the filly’s next start.
Apprentice T. Huxham, the rider of MAGIC RED, was reprimanded under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip in a forehand manner in excess of 5 occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 2: CENTREPOINT APARTMENTS CALOUNDRA 4YO & UP - 1000m
1st – Korvey Choice 2nd – Rich Kingdom 3rd – Benji Bullet 4th – Sequoia Rose
The start of this race was delayed as SNUFFY (J. Kropp) was required to be resaddled.
COUNT PESTO (B. Abbey) and RIJEKA (S. Wiseman) were both slow to begin.
Apprentice T. Huxham, the rider of CAN HE GO, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 800m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of COUNT PESTO, resulting in that runner having to be checked and losing ground. Apprentice T. Huxham’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 5 June, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 15 June 2011.
SEQUOIA ROSE (P. Schmidt) hung throughout the event.
SNUFFY raced wide throughout.
Trainer D. Churchill was advised that SNUFFY, which bled from both nostrils during the event, would now incur a mandatory 3-month bar from racing and must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a steward before being permitted to race again.
Race 3: IRM ELECTRICAL SERVICE QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Sammy Junior 2nd – Waranga 3rd – Just Pink 4th – Molly’s Way
The start of this race was delayed when jockey W. D’Avila, the rider of JUST PINK, was struck in the head by that filly whilst in the parade yard. After being examined by the doctor, jockey D’Avila was stood down for this race and replaced by O. Turpin.
The start of this race was further delayed when MOLLY'S WAY (D. Griffin) proved difficult to load and DIAMOND PEARL (J. Taylor) refused to load and was declared a late scratching at 1.27 p.m. Connections of MOLLY'S WAY will be advised that a warning would be placed on that filly. Connections of DIAMOND PEARL were advised that 2 barrier certificates, one of which must be obtained in an official barrier trial, must be obtained for DIAMOND PEARL prior to its next start. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on DIAMOND PEARL be refunded, with deductions of 4 cents in the dollar on the face value of win tickets and 5 cents in the dollar on the face value of place tickets to apply. Trainer D. Pearson was advised that he must obtain 2 further barrier certificates for DIAMOND PEARL prior to its next start.
IDLE MINDS (J. Hoopert) was slow to begin.
MOLLY'S WAY and CAPTAIN COOPER (N. Thomas) came together on jumping away.
JUST PINK (O. Turpin) blundered on jumping away.
JUST PINK and SANSIRA (K. Pedron) raced wide throughout.
MOLLY'S WAY hung out rounding the home turn.
WARANGA (A. Spinks) laid in under pressure in the home straight and as a result had difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 100m and continued to prove difficult to ride out from that point.
O. Turpin, the rider of JUST PINK, dropped his whip near the 300m.
Race 4: PITCHERS HOSPITALITY SUPPLIES OPEN H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Big Tony 2nd – Tycoon Tattoo 3rd – County Sherrif 4th – Allertive
BEVAGNA (W. D'Avila) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with TYCOON TATTOO (P. Wolfgram).
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Hellyer, the rider of HEZA FLASHMAN, which was slow to begin and finished a distant last. Apprentice Hellyer stated that at no stage did the horse travel in the event and was under pressure to tack on to the back of the field leaving the 800m. He added that the horse was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight and proved extremely disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer T. Sears stated that whilst in his opinion the horse may not have been entirely suited to today’s race distance he was nonetheless disappointed in the performance and would now send the horse for an immediate spell. Mr Sears undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in coming days that may explain the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of HEZA FLASHMAN revealed no abnormalities.
Race 5: SECURE ACCESS IT CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Why Warrior 2nd – Edwardscissorhands 3rd – Velvet Knight 4th – Running Vixen
TURENNE (A. Spinks) blundered on jumping away and again blundered shortly after the start, losing ground. A short distance later TURENNE was hampered when tightened for room between DODGE TIDE (C. Ormsby) and WHY WARRIOR (D. Griffin), which shifted in.
GEMMARS GIRL (P. Schmidt) blundered on jumping away.
RUNNING VIXEN (N. Thomas) jumped away awkwardly.
MILLHOUSEN (C. Small) and TURENNE raced wide throughout.
Apprentice D. McWhinney, the rider of DANZACTION, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 800m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of EDWARDSCISSORHANDS (J. Hoopert), resulting in EDWARDSCISSORHANDS being tightened for room and having to be checked and tightening VELVET KNIGHT (W. D'Avila) on to the hind quarters of RUNNING VIXEN, resulting in VELVET KNIGHT losing ground. Apprentice McWhinney’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 29 May, and expire at midnight on Saturday, 11 June 2011.
WHY WARRIOR hung out rounding the first turn.
Near the 300m EDWARDSCISSORHANDS had difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance.
Stewards sought an explanation from jockey C. Ormsby regarding the below market expectation performance of DODGE TIDE. Jockey Ormsby stated that from a wide alley he was forced to ride the horse vigorously to obtain a forward position until a point near the 800m. He added that following this the horse did not travel at any stage and hung out slightly rounding the home turn. He further added that when considering that this was the horse’s first start on the cushion track and also the first time racing in the clockwise direction in a race which was not entirely a suitable distance, he was not entirely disappointed with the performance. Trainer M. Moroney agreed with jockey Ormsby’s opinion and advised stewards of his intention to start the horse over more ground next start. A post-race veterinary examination of DODGE TIDE revealed no abnormalities.
A post-race veterinary examination of TURENNE, which performed poorly, revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Ms E. Bartlett undertook to advise stewards if anything comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.
Race 6: K SMITH & SON, JEWELLERS CLASS 3 PLATE - 2000m
1st – Grey Assignment 2nd – Hootilla 3rd – Kenny’s Magic 4th – In His Image
After hearing an explanation from trainer D. Peoples as to the reason for the late scratching of NOISY SCOOTER at 7.45 a.m., stewards were of the view that in the circumstances a reprimand should be issued.
REAL WORLD (Matthew Palmer) and FAMOUS FORTUNE (C. Small) were slow to begin.
KENNY’S MAGIC (K. Gates) blundered on jumping away.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion GREY ASSIGNMENT (E. Wilkinson) was forced to steady when tightened for room between KENNY’S MAGIC and IN HIS IMAGE (D. McWhinney) which shifted in. HOOTILLA (D. Griffin), which was following, was forced to take hold from that horse’s heels and lost ground. Apprentice D. McWhinney was severely reprimanded for this incident.
LAUREN'S HALO (T. Huxham), CHECK THE LEADER (J. Taylor) and FANTASTIC CARAT (W. D'Avila) raced wide throughout.
ROSA DELAGO (M. Reuben) overraced during the early and middle stages until a point approaching the 800m where the rider elected to shift wider on the track to improve and in doing so forced FANTASTIC CARAT and RAJEENA (N. Thomas) wider on the track.
Near the 1200m, due to the slow early pace, N. Thomas, the rider of RAJEENA, elected to shift wider on the track and push forward to secure a position closer to the lead, however he was forced to race wide from that point onwards.
HOOTILLA (D. Griffin) had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 450m until leaving the 300m.
A post-race veterinary examination of RAJEENA revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer S. Thomas was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to the horse’s next start.
M. Reuben, the rider of ROSA DELAGO, was reprimanded under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for using his whip in a forehand manner in excess of 5 occasions prior to the 100m.
Race 7: BANK OF QUEENSLAND CALOUNDRA CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Hussonator 2nd – Cauldron 3rd – My Dream Catcher 4th – Macsquire
GALLUS (J. Hoopert), which became fractious en route to the track, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon upon arrival and passed to take its place in the field.
MACSQUIRE (W. D'Avila) was slow to begin.
GALLUS made the 1200m turn awkwardly and shifted out forcing MY DREAM CATCHER (D. Griffin), CACHACA (A. Spinks) and HONOUR GUARD (K. Pedron) wider on the track.
HONOUR GUARD, which overraced, and INTERLOCKING (D. Missen) raced wide throughout.
MY DREAM CATCHER overraced during the middle stages.
CACHACA had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 400m onwards.
A post-race veterinary examination of CAULDRON found the horse to have pulled up in a distressed state. Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that he must produce a veterinary certificate prior to the horse’s next start.
Race 8: SHADE & SECURITY CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – I’m Busy 2nd – Mishani Archer 3rd – Tarantara 4th – Beautiful Buns
BICKIE PEDLAR (B. Wallace), which became fractious en route to the track, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon upon arrival and passed to take its place in the field.
KALINGA ECHO (P. Schmidt) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
MISHANI ARCHER (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
SKEYANA (M. Radecker) jumped away awkwardly and made contact with BEAUTIFUL BUNS (M. Reuben).
BICKIE PEDLAR, BEAUTIFUL BUNS and LEYBURNS LAD (A. Spinks) raced wide throughout.
JOY’S SPIRIT (D. McWhinney) shifted wider approaching the 600m and made the home turn extremely wide.
RASCAL (E. Wilkinson) was held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the straight.
Near the 400m TARANTARA (P. Hammersley) shifted out around the heels of BICKIE PEDLAR in an attempt to obtain clear running and in doing so came into contact with the hind quarters of BEAUTIFUL BUNS, causing both horses to become unbalanced for a short distance.
Apprentice D. McWhinney, the rider of JOY’S SPIRIT, dropped his whip at the 300m.
TARANTARA lost its near hind plate in running.
A post-race veterinary examination of OUR DAISY LANE (N. Thomas), which compounded over the concluding stages, failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer T. Thomas was advised that the mare’s nomination will not be accepted for TAB meetings until its form improves.
