_____________________________

Stewards intend inquiring into the circumstances which led to A. Spinks being replaced on his engagements in Races 4 and 5.

Race 1: Ambassador Travel Services Mares Maiden H'cap - 1000m
1st – White Heather 2nd – Zabeauty 3rd – Djebel’s Impact 4th – Light In The Field

ZABEAUTY (T. Harrison) was slow to begin.

Stewards questioned apprentice J. Kropp and trainer J. Johnston regarding the tactics adopted on LIGHT IN THE FIELD, in particular his apparent failure to restrain his mount when caught wide leaving the 900m in an attempt to secure a position with cover closer to the rail when it appeared he had opportunity to do so. Apprentice Kropp stated he had been instructed to attempt to take up a position just behind the leader if possible and as a result he rode vigorously in the first 100m. However when it became apparent he did not have sufficient speed to cross runners to his inside he elected to attempt to settle LIGHT IN THE FIELD, and as he had been instructed not to be positioned too far back he was satisfied that being positioned wide outside the leaders was a satisfactory option given the circumstances. Trainer J. Johnston confirmed the instructions. Both apprentice Kropp and Mr Johnston agreed that in hindsight apprentice Kropp would have been better served to steady when leaving the 900m and taking up a trailing position. Stewards advised apprentice Kropp that whilst in their opinion he had erred, they were however not satisfied that this had a significant detrimental effect on the overall performance and took no further action.

Cassidy advised that after being slow to begin, he rode BIG DREAMS vigorously during the early stages and improved onto heels approaching the 800m and the gelding overraced with its head in the air until approaching the 600m. He added that, in his opinion, BIG DREAMS may be better suited in races over longer distances with a slower early pace which would enable the horse to obtain a position without being pressured during the early stages.

STORMIN shifted out to improve from the 800m and raced wide from that point onwards.

A post-race veterinary examination of MODERN EXPRESS revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer R. Bradshaw was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the horse prior to its next race start.

Race 5: Anmel Cherrypicker Hire Class 2 H'cap - 1100m

Leaving the 800m, CHORAL (T. Harrison) raced ungenerously and shifted out when restrained to avoid the heels of SHIMMERING HEIGHTS (D. Browne), which shifted in whilst being eased. Jockey D. Brown, rider of SHIMMERING HEIGHTS, was reprimanded for this incident.

Race 6: Niagara Furniture Finishes Pty Ltd Benchmark 75 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Machination 2nd – Get That Indya 3rd – Taira 4th – Diehard Trying

MACHINATION (A. Badger) lost ground when was tightened for room at the start between TAIRA (S. Wiseman) and GET THAT INDYA (L. Cassidy), both of which shifted ground.

Approaching the 1200m, JACARANDA LEADER (G. Killen) had to be steadied when tightened for room to the inside of RUNNING VIXEN (K. Gates), which when overracing shifted in and away from SWEET REWARD (D. Browne),which also shifted in. D. Browne, rider of IRISHKIWI, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. RUNNING VIXEN (K. Gates) then overraced at the heels of IRISHKIWI (D. Browne) until the 600m and was steadied from heels on a number of occasions.

D. Griffin reported that, in his opinion, EXPRESSWAY did not run out a strong 1400m. Trainer M. Mair agreed with jockey Griffin’s assessment and advised that he would now look to start the horse in races of 1200m or less.

A post-race veterinary examination of JACARANDA LEADER which finished a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer B. Ruming advised that in light of today’s performance he would consider retiring the gelding.
