FROM GCTC 1.5.10 – Race 2: Stewards concluded an inquiry into the tactics adopted on ARDENT LOVER (C. Whiteley), particularly the reason for the horse being positioned in a rearward position, which was in contrast to the horse’s previous starts. Trainer G. Heinrich advised that her instructions to jockey Whiteley were to take up a position mid-field, however did not expect the horse to be as far back as it was in the event. Stewards noted the explanation and reminded G. Heinrich of her obligations under AR. 135.

FROM TTC 15.5.10 – Race 4: Following an investigation into the notification of gear by trainer A. Cowell for STAR OF AMY, stewards found that the horse raced in gear which did not concur with records and Mr Cowell was fined $200 for failing to ensure the horse raced in its recorded gear.

FROM DOOMBEN 15.5.10 – Race 5: Jockey R. Wiggins, the rider of LYNCEAN ACADEMY, was fined $300 under AR. 137A(5)(a)(ii) for striking his mount on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

Race 1: HARRY BROWN BRISBANE BLOODSTOCK BONUS H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Turnitup 2nd – Montreaux Jazz 3rd – Run For Levi 4th – Hi Jo Silver

STORMY SUMMER (J. Byrne) was slow to jump.

FLEUR DE BAIE (P. Hammersley) raced wide throughout the event.

When the pace slackened approaching the 700m HEART OF HEARTS (B. Stewart) improved on to the heels of MONTREAUX JAZZ and had to be checked and shifted out, severely hampering STORMY SUMMER. STORMY SUMMER was then obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event.

M. Cahill, the rider of MONTREAUX JAZZ, reported that approaching and rounding the home turn he was content to trail HI JO SILVER (S. Scriven) as he was of the opinion that it was one of the better chances in the race and added that in the early part of the straight, whilst he did not apply the whip to MONTREAUX JAZZ, he placed the filly under pressure hands and heels and it commenced to lay in behind HI JO SILVER. M. Cahill further explained that a short distance later when HI JO SILVER shifted in he was able to obtain clear running and the filly finished the race off well.

Following the running of Race 1 the track was upgraded to GOOD 3, retrospective to Race 1.

Race 2: XXXX SUMMER BRIGHT MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – She Can Command 2nd – Dancing Duo 3rd – Cartier Belle 4th – Faenza

Connections advised that whilst it was the horse’s first start, the instructions to R. McMahon would be to ride FAENZA, from its wide barrier, in a rearward position if possible.

The start of this race was delayed when CARTIER BELLE (J. Byrne) dislodged its off fore plate when assembling behind the barriers. After several failed attempts to refit the plate, stewards, after consultation with the veterinary surgeon and trainer R. Heathcote, allowed the near fore plate to be removed and the horse raced without plates in front.

FAENZA (R. McMahon) and ROCKIN’ ME (M. Hellyer) were slow to begin.

STILETTO EXPRESS (M. Hughes) jumped away awkwardly.

NIELLO JOSIE (M. Cahill) overraced in the early and middle stages at the heels of STILETTO EXPRESS.

Leaving the 1000m SEATTLE LEICA (D. Barron) commenced to hang in severely and leaving the 700m shifted in and made heavy contact with the running rail and lost ground. ROCKIN’ ME, which was following, was obliged to shift outwards to avoid that horse’s heels, resulting in SOPHIES SPECIAL (M. Radecker) having to be checked when tightened for room between ROCKIN’ ME and FAEZA, which when racing greenly improved to the inside of SYRIAN SHIRAZ and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. SEATTLE LEICA continued to hang in severely, making contact with the fence on several occasions and inconveniencing ROCKIN’ ME, which was trailing SEATTLE LEICA. Trainer S. O’Sullivan that SEATTLE LEICA must perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial before it is permitted to race again.

Leaving the 500m MISS SANDREINE (C. Priest) shifted in momentarily tightening the running of FAIZA which overreacted when racing greenly and had to be steadied.

Stewards sought an explanation from trainer’s representative for D. Forster, Mr Cook, in relation to the seemingly improved performance of SHE CAN COMMAND. Mr Cook stated that the horse was only having its second start in a race and in his opinion had taken great benefit from its first start at Ipswich where after racing up on the speed it tired over the concluding stages.

Stewards sought an explanation in respect to the seemingly disappointing performance of DUBAILAND. S. Katsidis stated that it was the intention to lead or race on the speed, however the horse was unable to muster enough pace early to do so and settled further back than anticipated. S. Katsidis added that nevertheless the horse travelled well through the middle stages but only accelerated for a short distance in the straight and proved disappointing.

Race 3: DOWN UNDER CELLARS MAIDEN PLATE - 1200m
1st – Fast Lover 2nd – River Boat Gambler 3rd – Stickman 4th – Here Comes Tony

TOPSYND (M. Speers) was slow to jump.

KINETIC HEAT (S. Guymer) jumped away awkwardly.

BAG THE PROFIT (C. Priest) overraced in the middle stages.

KINETIC HEAT raced wide throughout.

Near the 500m KING ECHELON (S. Katsidis) improved up on to the heels of HAZRAT (K. Sawyers) and had to be steadied, and when being steadied shifted out.

Stewards sought an explanation in respect to the seemingly disappointing performance of KING ECHELON S. Katsidis stated that he was able to secure a good position on KING ECHELON mid-field, however the horse did not accelerate and only finished the race off fairly. S. Katsidis added that in his opinion KING ECHELON, being a big horse, would be more suited to distances further than that of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of KING ECHELON failed to reveal any abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of BAG THE PROFIT revealed the gelding had sustained a laceration to its off hind leg.

Race 4: YALUMBA QTIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1400m,
1st – Star Cure 2nd – Degree Of Honour 3rd – D’Orsay 4th – Point Pain/Western Run

FLAMING SILK, which reared over in its raceday stall, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed suitable to race.

Connections of POINT PAIN advised stewards that it was the intention to have the horse ridden closer to the lead if circumstances permitted.

PICALUREN (M. Speers) was slow to begin.

POINT PAIN (S. Katsidis), MAJESTIC SOUND (J. Byrne) and D’ORSAY (M. Cahill) raced wide throughout.

Near the 300m CLANGOR (R. Wiggins) was disappointed for a run between UNREFUSEABLE (Matthew Palmer) and SWISS STRIKE (N. Yamada) when SWISS STRIKE shifted out. CLANGOR had to be steadied as a result.

CRAIGLEA ROCKET (B. Stewart) was unable to secure clear running until a point approaching the 200m.

Approaching the 200m MAJESTIC SOUND had to be momentarily steadied when tightened for room between D’ORSAY and STAR CURE (P. Hammersley) when that horse shifted out to improve.

Stewards sought an explanation from J. Byrne, the rider of MAJESTIC SOUND, as to the reasons he left a position one off the fence trailing MITAYDEN (J. Stanley) near the 700m to a position to the outside of that horse three wide. J. Byrne stated that he was instructed that as the horse was a big horse connections did not want its stride interrupted during the run if at all possible and when he observed S. Katsidis (POINT PAIN) on another fancied runner progressing three wide, he took the opportunity to trail that horse into the race. J. Byrne added that once he progressed to that position MAJESTIC SOUND commenced to hang out and proved difficult to ride out. J. Byrne further added that the horse finished the race off only fairly and he felt that the addition of blinkers along with a step up in distance would be beneficial.

Jockey J. Taylor reported that DOUBLE LINES travelled well during the early and middle stages, however in his opinion was reluctant to stretch out once he placed the gelding under pressure. J. Taylor added that he was of the view that DOUBLE LINES may appreciate a surface that was not as firm as that of today’s.

S. Katsidis, the rider of POINT PAIN, was forced to stop riding and alter course on two occasions when disappointed for a run over the concluding stages.

EMBANK (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.

S. Katsidis reported to stewards that he intended to settle LOVE AND KISSES in a handy position today, however the filly failed to muster enough speed to do so which resulted in him settling further back than he had anticipated. S. Katsidis went on to add that LOVE AND KISSES took time to gather its momentum in the early stages of the straight, however finished the race off well and will be more suited over distances further than that of today’s event.
