Race 1: Sunshine Beach Nippers Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Ragazza Veloce 2nd – Itstheritz 3rd – Current Affair 4th – Over Friendly
On return to scale a protest was lodged by J. Holder, rider of the 4th placegetter, OVERFRIENDLY, against CURRENT AFFAIR (D. Browne) being declared 3rd, alleging interference leaving the 400m. A further protest was lodged by D. Browne, rider of the 3rd placegetter, CURRENT AFFAIR, against ITSTHERITZ (P. Robl) being declared 2nd, alleging interference leaving the 400m.
It was established that leaving the 400m, ITSTHERITZ shifted out to obtain clear running and was inconvenienced by RAGAZZA VELOCE (J. Kropp), which shifted out slightly, resulting in ITSTHERITZ shifting wider than anticipated and as a result made contact with CURRENT AFFAIR, which in turn shifted out and brushed OVERFRIENDLY, forcing that runner wider on the track. After taking evidence from all parties, stewards could not be satisfied that any interference sustained warranted a reversal of placings and therefore both protests were dismissed and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry, stewards noted the slight shift outwards from RAGAZZA VELOCE, however were of the opinion that ITSTHERITZ continued to shift out under riding, making contact with runners to its outside. As a result, P. Robl, rider of ITSTHERITZ, was reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Dunn, rider of MANZANILLA to relieve the pressure to his inside. As a result of this incident, CARRY THAT WEIGHT had to be steadied near the 1000m. In considering all matters, stewards could not attribute blame to any one rider, however both D. Dunn, rider of MANZANILLA, and D. He added that, in his opinion, BLACK TONI would be better placed when racing outside horses, a position he was unable to take up due to drawing an inside barrier. Stewards noted the explanation. A post race veterinary examination of BLACK TONI failed to reveal any abnormalities, other than it had lost its near hind plate in running.
