Race 1: Melbourne Cup Packages @ SCTC.Com.Au Maiden H'cap – 1000m
1st – Aqualin 2nd – My Good Friend 3rd – Denmark Hill 4th – Not Declared
THE FENDZ WAY (D. Sparks) was slow to begin and lost ground.
JAASI’S CHANCE (D. McWhinney) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, losing valuable ground.
Approaching the 900m, THE WHO (O. Turpin) and CONTESSA BELLE (M. Hellyer) were both obliged to steady when tightened for room between POP’S CHOICE (J. Byrne) and NOT DECLARED (B. Looker), which shifted in. B. Looker, rider of NOT DECLARED, was reprimanded for this incident.
B. Looker, rider of NOT DECLARED, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 800m he allowed his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MASTER FORESHORE (T. Harrison), which resulted in MASTER FORESHORE being taken in, tightening the rightful running of LOVELY WITCH (A. Spinks), which was racing to the outside of DIPPSY DOO (D. Green), resulting in A. Spinks, rider of LOVELY WITCH, having to take hold at this stage and relinquish its position. As a result of this incident, DENMARK HILL (J. Hoopert) improved on to the heels of LOVELY WITCH and had to be steadied. B. Looker was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 21 September and to expire at midnight, 1 October 2011.
Nearing the 600m, MASTER FORESHORE became unbalanced and shifted out after receiving contact from DIPPSY DOO (D. Green), which hung out. MASTER FORESHORE then raced wide from that point onwards.
AQUALIN (T. Huxham) was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
THE WHO (O. Turpin) raced wide throughout.
Stewards afforded jockey J. Byrne the opportunity to comment on the performance of POP’S CHOICE, which performed below market expectations. J. Byrne stated that after enjoying a favourable run throughout, the horse, after being bumped on a number of occasions leaving the 600m when AQUALIN shifted out in an endeavour to gain clear running, then commenced to travel poorly and proved disappointing in the run to the line. Trainer D. Hansen confirmed his disappointment in the overall performance and advised stewards that following today’s performance POP’S CHOICE would no longer be in his care.
DIPPSY DOO (D. Green), which hung out throughout the event, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and found to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer S. Essery was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for the horse prior to its next race start.
Stewards afforded M. Hellyer the opportunity to comment on the performance of CONTESSA BELLE, which on face value appeared below market expectations. M. Hellyer stated that given the mare’s wide alley and the fact that it raced wide throughout the event, and that it was having its first start back from a spell, he was not entirely disappointed with the overall performance, stating the factors mentioned may have had a detrimental effect on the performance. Trainer D. Duryea confirmed her disappointment in the performance adding that, in her opinion, CONTESSA BELLE may be looking for races over more ground.
Race 2: Pre Order Picnic Hampers @ SCTC.Com.Au QTIS 3yo Maiden Plate - 1000m
1st – Bahama Flyer 2nd – Tight Reign 3rd – Restless Heart 4th – Phantom Beau
LADY OSCAR (B. Looker), SUNDAE DREAMIN’ (M. Gray) and ACQUAINT (J. Hoopert) were all severely tightened for room at the start between FLEET ANCHOR (O. Turpin) and BAHAMA FLYER (N. Thomas), which shifted in. In this incident, ACQUAINT and LADY OSCAR lost significant ground.
TIGHT REIGN (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 800m, RAPID ADVANCE (K. Pope) was forced to race in restricted room and had to be steadied to the inside of SOAP BOX SALLY (J. Taylor), which hung in from the start and was taken in at this point by MY MATE SULLY (D. Griffin), which shifted in.
During the early stages BAHAMA FLYER (N. Thomas) laid in and at a point near the 800m shifted in, hampering FLEET ANCHOR.
Leaving the 800m, LOMU (P. Schmidt) shifted in despite the efforts of its rider and had to be steadied from the heels of SOAP BOX SALLY.
After passing the 700m, TIGHT REIGN had to be steadied when tightened for room between KERL (T. Huxham) and LOMU, which when overracing was taken in by PHANTOM BEAU (J. Kropp). J. Kropp, rider of PHANTOM BEAU, was advised to exercise more care.
LOMU was held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
Approaching the 400m, LADY OSCAR shifted out to improve and in doing so came into heavy contact with LETHAL ROSE, forcing that horse wider on the track.
After leaving the 200m LOMU was unable to secure clear running when the horse was reluctant to proceed into a narrow run between RAPID ADVANCE and MY MATE SULLY.
ACQUAINT and LETHAL ROSE (D. McWhinney) raced wide throughout.
BAHAMA FLYER lost its near hind plate in running.
Race 3: Have your Xmas Party At The Races Class 6 Plate – 1400m
1st – Grain Trader 2nd – De Bois 3rd – Banana Kick 4th – Hollywood And Vine
IRISHKIWI (N. Thomas) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 1200m ST CLEMENT DANES (R. Hancock) shifted in of its own accord and made contact with the running rail.
BANANA KICK (D. Griffin), after being held up rounding the home turn, was disappointed for clear running between MEDIUS (C. Priest) and GRAIN TRADER (P. Schmidt) and as a result had to be steadied, and was then held up until approaching the 200m.
T. Huxham reported to stewards that SLEPNER was left flatfooted when the pace of the race increased leaving the 600m and, in his opinion, was looking for races over more ground.
Race 4: Membership Available Now @ SCTC.Com.Au Maiden H'cap – 1400m
1st – Jade’s Dilemma 2nd – Bloomin Tipsy 3rd – Keep In Time 4th - Roselon
KEEP IN TIME (J. Byrne) and DAWN BOY (O. Turpin) were both considerably slow to begin.
MOSSMAN’S RANSOME (N. Thomas) blundered on jumping away.
Approaching the 1000m, after obtaining the lead, N. Thomas, rider of MOSSMAN’S RANSOM, steadied the pace and as a result ALEXTHEASTRONOMER (D. Green) improved on to that gelding’s heels and had to be steadied on a number of occasions until leaving the 700m.
Leaving the 900m, MOUNTAIN OF GOLD (A. Erhart) improved on to the heels of ON SUNDAY (J. Taylor) and had to be steadied. As a result, MOUNTAIN OF GOLD shifted out, making contact with BLOOMIN TIPSY (G. Goold) and forcing that horse wider on the track.
Apprentice G. Goold, rider of BLOOMIN TIPSY, was found guilty of careless riding, in that near the 100m, whilst riding along, he allowed his mount to shift in, which resulted in OH SUNDAY (J. Taylor) being taken in, forcing causing BOOTS ‘N’ ALL to be taken in onto the rightful running of DIXIE FLYER (A. Spinks), causing DIXIE FLYER to have to be restrained to avoid the heels of BOOTS ‘N’ ALL. G. Goold was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 5 meetings, to commence at midnight, 18 September and to expire at midnight, 30 September. As a result of incident, CROATIAN QUALITY (R. Wiggins) improved on to the heels of DIXIE FLYER and had to be steadied.
Near the 100m, ROSELON (E. Wilkinson) shifted out abruptly under pressure and continued to lay out for the remainder of the event.
BALLET STAR (K. Wharton) raced 4 wide throughout.
BOOTS ‘N’ JEANS (M. Hughes) and BLOOMIN TIPSY raced 3 wide throughout.
DIXIE FLYER lost both hind plates during the race.
Race 5: Ilve Appliances Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
1st – Vital Organ 2nd – Sammy Junior 3rd – My Quilter 4th – Fourth Of July
The start of this race was delayed when RARE SUBJECT, which presented behind the barriers with blood in its mouth, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed to take its place in the field.
DAWN RETURN (O. Turpin) and IDLE RICH (N. Thomas) were both slow to begin.
RESONATING (R. Hancock) jumped in the air at the start.
Leaving the 800m, IDLE RICH (N. Thomas) had to be steadied and was forced to shift out to avoid the heels of FOURTH OF JULY (D. McWhinney), which was taken in by TRADIES HOPE (D. Green). IDLE RICH was forced to raced wide from that point onwards.
HI JO SILVER (K. Pope) overraced from approaching the 800m until leaving the 600m.
ZARMARSKI (M. Radecker) and TRADIES HOPE (D. Green) raced wide throughout.
Stewards afforded J. Byrne the opportunity to comment on the performance of RARE SUBJECT. J. Byrne stated that it had not been his intention to be positioned as far back in the field during the early stages, however the horse failed to muster early speed. He added that the mare did not sprint quickly when pressured rounding the home turn and following the performance was of the view that RARE SUBJECT would be suited to races over longer distances.
Race 6: Friday Night Summer Racing Is Coming Class 3 H'cap - 1800m
1st – Lughaat 2nd – Get Uppity 3rd – Mystical Bel 4th – Farther O’Reilly
Correct weight was delayed to enable R. Wiggins, rider of CORONER, which missed the start badly, to view footage of the start to ascertain if he had grounds to be declared a non runner. After viewing the film he elected to not to proceed. Trainer T. Hall was advised that a warning would be placed on CORONER regarding it barrier manners.
MYSTICAL BEL (G. Goold), which raced wide throughout, became unbalanced and was forced wider when bumped leaving the 1200m by ALL THE QUEUES (J. Kropp), which shifted out after overracing on to the heels of SIR MOSSMAN (O. Turpin).
CORONER (R. Wiggins) overraced on to the heels of LUGHAAT (J. Byrne) approaching the 1000m and as a result shifted out, racing wide from that point onwards.
Stewards sought an explanation from apprentice M. Hellyer regarding the below-market expectation performance of GLORIETTA. M. Hellyer stated that after enjoying a nice run in a forward position throughout the event, the mare failed to run on as expected in the home straight and he felt this could be attributed to the horse being more suited to rain-affected conditions as the horse has had a tendency to jar up on firm surfaces in the past. A post-race veterinary examination of GLORIETTA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer D. Duryea agreed with the comments of apprentice Hellyer and undertook to report to stewards any abnormality which becomes apparent that may have had a bearing on today's performance.
Stewards questioned O. Turpin regarding the tactics adopted on SIR MOSSMAN, in particular his reasons for shifting wider on the track when leaving the 800m and riding vigorously when he appeared to be already travelling in a favourable position behind FARTHER O’REILLY`. O. Turpin stated that instructions from trainer J. Walk were to put the horse under pressure leaving the 800m, as in the trainer’s opinion the horse is one paced and does not sprint quickly, and would therefore be detrimental to the horse’s chances to wait behind FARTHER O’REILLY. Stewards confirmed these instructions with trainer J. Walk, who also added that the horse would now be sent for a spell in light of today’s performance.
M. Palmer, rider of DOMRAS, reported to stewards that after entering the home straight he endeavoured to shift wider on the track to obtain clear running, however was disappointed and therefore shifted back to the inside, and then at a point approaching the 200m was again held up behind TOY RULER. As a result DOMRAS went to the line without being fully tested.
Stewards afforded apprentice Goold the opportunity to comment on the performance of MYSTICAL BEL, and the tactics adopted during the early stages. He stated that with the addition of blinkers today he had been instructed to gain a forward position, however a short distance after the start, and after having applied significant pressure to the mare, it became apparent he would not be able to obtain a forward position and he then attempted to gain cover midfield. However apprentice Goold was unable to obtain cover and this resulted in him being forced to race 3 wide throughout. He added that given the circumstances, the overall performance of MYSTICAL BEL was satisfactory. Trainer Mr C. Stott advised that the mare would now be sent for a spell.
Race 7: Every Sunday Is Family Day At The SCTC Class 1 H'cap – 1600m
1st – Phoeb’s Flyer 2nd – Midnite Raid 3rd – Modern Al 4th –Thegreatandthegood
Correct weight was delayed as C. Small, rider of LADY GAINSFORD, made application to the stewards to be declared a non runner. After taking evidence from the starter, jockey Small and viewing the patrol video, stewards were satisfied that LADY GAINSFORD reared at the start and lost considerable ground. As LADY GAINSFORD had not been encumbered by any gear or apparatus as the start was effected, the mare was declared a runner. Trainer B. Richardson was advised that a warning would be placed on LADY GAINSFORD regarding its barriers manners.
MACHO CAT (R. Hancock) and LOST AT SEA (J. Taylor) were slow to begin.
SHREWD HOSTESS (A. Erhart) and BACKUP PLAN (D. Sparks) raced wide throughout.
Race 8: Have Your Function At The SCTC Class 2 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Newland Warrior 2nd – I’m Busy 3rd – Aminutemore 4th – Count Romano
As D. Griffin was to be overweight, R. Wiggins was substituted as the rider of DON’S SURPRISE. Stewards accepted D. Griffin’s explanation for being overweight.
DON’S SURPRISE was declared a late scratching at 4.10 pm on veterinary advice. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for DON’S SURPRISE prior to its next race start.
LOVE THAT CHICK (R. Hancock), SARGASSO (E. Wilkinson) and FLYBEFREE (J. Stanley) were all slow to begin.
LOVE THAT CHICK overraced during the early stages.
Leaving the 1100m ALICE COUPEZ (A. Erhart), which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied when racing to the inside of YAMACUTTA (J. Taylor), which was taken in by ESBEND (N. Thomas). N. Thomas, rider of ESBEND, was reprimanded for this incident.
Approaching the 1000m, DARTH (D. Green), which was overracing at the heels of AMINUTEMORE (P. Schmidt), shifted in, placing SARGASSO, which had commenced to overrace, and COUNT ROMANO (M. Hellyer), to that horse’s inside, in restricted room. SARGASSO then continued to overrace and a point near the 800m shifted out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider, causing DARTH to be checked when tightened for room between that horse and ALICE COUPEZ to his outside. SARGASSO then continued to lay out for the remainder of the event and this resulted in its rider having to stop riding and straighten the gelding near the 200m. Given the poor racing manners of SARGASSO, trainer T. Thomas was advised that the gelding must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start.
Both AMINUTEMORE and SARGASSO was held up rounding the home turn.
YAMACUTTA (J. Taylor), ALICE COUPEZ and SOPHIES SPECIAL (M. Radecker) raced wide throughout.
