Race 1: AMBASSADOR TRAVEL MAIDEN PLATE - 2200m
1st – Moratorio 2nd – Semison 3rd – Moringa’s Sundance 4th – Sideshow Summer
SEMISON (R. Jamieson) was slow to begin.
SIDESHOW SUMMER (A. Hearn) raced wide in the early and middle stages.
SEMISON raced wide for the majority of the event and approaching the 1200m was forced four wide when GENEVA’S OLLIE (A. Butler) shifted out. SEMISON then raced in that position for the remainder of the event.
SIDESHOW SUMMER lost its near fore plate in running.
Following the event, trainer G. Harrison approached stewards with concerns regarding the tactics adopted by apprentice K. Matheson on her horse AUDACIOUS AL. Ms Harrison was of the view that the apprentice rode the horse contrary to the issued instructions, which were to settle the horse just off the speed and to move the horse wider on the track rounding the home turn. AUDACIOUS AL in this race led the event and remained on the rail for the majority of the race. When questioned regarding the matter, apprentice Matheson stated that the horse had a tendency to overrace in the early stages and as a result he allowed the horse to stride forward, however with regard to the instruction to move the horse wider on the track rounding the home turn, apprentice Matheson could not recall such instructions being issued. After considering the matter, stewards were satisfied with the explanation provided by apprentice Matheson regarding the fact the horse led in the race. However, he was reminded of his obligations to ensure that wherever possible he was to ride to instructions, particularly regarding moving the horse wider on the track rounding the home turn. In deciding the matter, stewards took into account apprentice K. Matheson’s relative inexperience regarding riding at Sunshine Coast race meetings.
Race 2: EAST COAST SHADES QTIS 2YO H’CAP - 1200m
1st – More Than Willing 2nd – Ain’t She Sweet 3rd – Smart Cookie 4th – Regillus
The start of this race was delayed when SILKEN ENDURANCE (G. Cooksley) required a veterinary inspection after the horse lunged and made contact with the barriers. SILKEN ENDURANCE was cleared to start.
AIN’T SHE SWEET (J. Kehoe) was slow to begin, resulting in the horse losing valuable ground.
DYSFUNCTION (J. Noonan) began awkwardly and shifted out making contact with SILKEN ENDURANCE, which in turn shifted out making heavy contact with JUST POKENALONG (G. Killen).
AIN’T SHE SWEET, after missing the start, raced wide in the early and middle stages.
Apprentice T. Harrison, the rider of SMART COOKIE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 800m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of REGILLUS (J. Taylor), resulting in that horse having to be checked by its rider. Whilst stewards believed that REGILLUS may have had a tendency to overrace at that stage to the point where it was racing to the inside of SMART COOKIE, it was as a result of the inward movement of SMART COOKIE that REGILLUS had to be checked. Apprentice Harrison’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 13 May, and expire at midnight on Friday, 25 May 2012.
MORE THAN WILLING (B. Wallace) raced greenly when placed under pressure in the straight.
Both J. Taylor, the rider of REGILLUS, and apprentice J. Noonan, the rider of DYSFUNCTION, were of the opinion that their respective mounts failed to handle the prevailing track conditions.
Race 3: TERMITE SOLUTIONS SUNSHINE COAST CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Secret Pleasure 2nd – Raise Your Banner 3rd – Gold Serpent 4th – Dame Judarius
PREVAILABLE was a late scratching at 12.04 p.m. on veterinary advice after it sustained an injury en route to the track.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of A GRADE STUDENT, apprentice T. Harrison could offer no tangible explanation other than the fact that the horse had a tendency to overrace in the early stages of the event. Trainer L. Wheeler confirmed his disappointment with the performance of A GRADE STUDENT. Stewards will contact Mr Wheeler at a later date regarding the post-race recovery of the gelding.
When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of SECRET PLEASURE (A. Hearn) today compared to its run at the Gold Coast on 7 April, trainer C. Anderson was somewhat at a loss to explain the improved performance today. He further explained that the horse became agitated on its trip to the track at the Gold Coast, however apart from that factor he could offer no tangible explanation for the improved performance. He stated that a veterinary examination of the mare following the event failed to find any significant abnormalities. Stewards noted his comments.
Race 4: RACE ZONE RACING SUPPLIES MAIDEN H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Magni 2nd – Decoolcat 3rd – La Bella Mermaid 4th – Maywyninthespring
The start of this race was delayed when JORJA'S DRAGON (J. Stanley), which became fractious in the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.
A’MAISEY (A. Hearn) began awkwardly and shifted in making contact with MAYWYNINTHESPRING (B. Wallace).
DECOOLCAT (R. Hancock) was tightened for room on jumping away between MAGNI (G. Goold) and TRULY VEXING (K. Fujii), which shifted out after beginning awkwardly.
SHACKALACK (K. Pope) and FULL OF SURPRISES (G. Killen) were slow to begin.
Near the 700m SHACKALACK (K. Pope) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of A’MAISEY which shifted out.
Leaving the 400m IRISH GIG (L. Rolls) had to be eased to avoid the heels of JORJA'S DRAGON which shifted slightly.
DECOOLCAT had a tendency to shift out under pressure over the final 200m.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WRITTENINTHERAIN, apprentice T. Harrison was of the view that the gelding failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. Trainer L. Wheeler agreed with the assessment of the apprentice that the gelding failed to handle the rain-affected track.
Race 5: SEA VISTA DEVELOPMENT QTIS 3YO H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Excellent Dane 2nd – Volkhere 3rd – Gotta Be Lucky 4th – Jet Star Girl
SUITE HEAVENS (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
JET STAR GIRL (G. Cooksley) was crowded for room on jumping away between SINGLE IN LONDON (E. Wilkinson) and IN A STORM (P. Keane) which shifted out.
Approaching the 1200m BOLD AUSSIE (L. Cassidy) had to be steadied when tightened for room when racing between VOLKHERE (D. Browne) and RESTLESS HEART (G. Killen), which shifted out.
Leaving the 600m BOLD AUSSIE attempted to shift out from the heels of EXCELLENT DANE (J. Byrne) and in doing so made contact with JET STAR GIRL.
Rounding the home turn IN A STORM was inclined to lay in across the heels of SINGLE IN LONDON.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of IN A STORM, apprentice P. Keane was of the view that the horse failed to run out the 1400m of today’s event on the heavy track.
Race 6: BIG KART TRACK CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Spring Queen 2nd – Lunar Cycle 3rd – Soul Crusade 4th – Eastern Dreams
As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, J. Byrne was substituted as the rider of SOUL CRUSADE. Subject to any further submissions from R. Wiggins, a fine of $100 will be imposed.
COASTAL (J. Taylor) was caught wide in the early stages of the event before being allowed to stride forward and obtain a position in the lead near the 1400m.
FUNDED (L. Finlay), SPRING QUEEN (A. Spinks), LUNAR CYCLE (B. Richardson), EASTERN DREAMS (Michael Palmer) and OCTDEHERE (T. Bell) raced wide for the majority of the event.
Leaving the 300m A. Spinks (SPRING QUEEN) had his whip knocked from his grasp by apprentice B. Richardson (LUNAR CYCLE).
T. Bell reported that OCTDEHERE was inclined to hang in when placed under pressure in the straight, resulting in him being unable to fully test the horse.
Apprentice D. McWhinney was transported to hospital following the running of Race 6 after complaining of severe abdominal cramps. A medical clearance will be required before apprentice D. McWhinney again rides.
EASTERN DREAMS lost its off hind plate in running.
Race 7: ANMEL CHERRYPICKER HIRE CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Comahni 2nd – Danish Whiskey 3rd – Supreme Affair 4th – Signified
DANISH WHISKEY (K. Wharton) was slow to begin.
DANEOMITE (L. Rolls) and ISSUES (E. Wilkinson) raced wide throughout.
C. Munce reported that SIGNIFIED failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions.
DANISH WHISKEY lost its near fore plate in running.
Race 8: CHAPS MENSWEAR CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – All The Torque 2nd – Love That Chick 3rd – Kistamon 4th – Cavalryman
Subject to any further submissions from trainer R. Cameron, a fine of $200 will be applied regarding the late scratching of AMETSIS at 8.08 a.m.
Trainer L. Birchley advised that it would be the intention to have CAVALRYMAN (G. Colless) ridden further back in the field than most recent starts, in a midfield or worse position. The horse was ridden accordingly.
FARTHER O'REILLY (L. Finlay) was slow to begin.
The saddle of LOVE THAT CHICK (R. Hancock) shifted forward in the early stages of the event and as a result R. Hancock was obliged to allow the horse to stride forward.
Approaching the 1200m FARTHER O'REILLY had to be eased to avoid the heels of CAVALRYMAN which shifted in.
Stewards questioned apprentice A. Badger and trainer N. Doyle regarding the disappointing performance of WILD PROMISES, and in particular the reasons for the horse losing significant ground near the 800m as a result of the horse losing contact with the main body of the field. Apprentice Badger stated that the horse had a tendency to lay in for the majority of the event and at a point near the 800m appeared to struggle in the going and hung in badly despite her efforts. Trainer N. Doyle confirmed his disappointment with the horse’s performance and in the absence of any further reason was of the view that WILD PROMISES failed to handle the prevailing track conditions and as a result advised stewards that it would be his intention not to race the mare again on tracks of a similar rating in future. A veterinary examination of WILD PROMISES revealed no abnormalities at the time of examination. After considering the matter, stewards, in view of the undertaking by trainer N. Doyle, took no further action in the matter other than to advise the trainer should anything come to light in the next 24 to 48 hours that may have affected the performance of WILD PROMISES, he should advise stewards immediately.
CAVALRYMAN lost its near fore plate in running.
