MONJAYA BOY was held up for clear running approaching the 300m and leaving that point C. Munce was obliged to stop riding and shift in after MONJAYA BOY improved on to the heels of the tiring MYSTERIOUS MAN.
Approaching the 100m MONJAYA BOY improved on to the heels of FLAMING AURA, which was racing greenly, and as a result C. Munce was forced to stop riding and shift to the inside to obtain clear running and in doing so inconvenienced FINE GOLD (Michael Palmer).

Goold reported that MYSTERIOUS MAN raced ungenerously during the early stages and when placed under pressure near the 400m failed to respond and in his opinion was reluctant to stretch out over the concluding stages. Trainer A. Jenkinson confirmed his disappointment in the performance and could offer no tangible explanation other than that the gelding may not have appreciated travelling down from Rockhampton for this event. Stewards afforded apprentice J. Noonan the opportunity to comment on the performance of MORE BUBBLY, which was below market expectations. He stated that after travelling well during the early part of the race the filly responded to his riding rounding the home turn and at that point he felt he was in contention to run a placing, however after passing the 200m MORE BUBBLY proved very disappointing and failed to finish the race off. Trainer’s representative Mr B. Killion was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance and in view of the filly’s recent form, it will be sent for an immediate spell.
Stewards sought an explanation from G. Cooksley regarding the performance of OPEN HEART, which was below market expectations.
