GENERAL

As S. Galloway was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Apprentice A. Allen was fined $100 for failing to produce a letter of authority.

Race 1: SKY RACING MAIDEN PLATE - 1800m
1st – Oriental Grace 2nd – Excalibre 3rd – Persian Book 4th – Paulina

As L. Cassidy had not arrived on course in time to fulfil his engagement, apprentice T. Harrison was substituted as the rider of ORIENTAL GRACE. L Cassidy was subsequently reprimanded.

LALUN LOVER (M. McKenzie) was slow to begin.

BEER WITH FRIENDS (L. Cheshire) had a tendency to lay in from the 400m onwards.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Palmer regarding the disappointing performance of LOCHTORIO. He stated that after travelling comfortably in a favourable position throughout, when asked for an effort rounding the home turn LOCHTORIO failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing in the run to the line. He added that the horse may not have run out a strong 1800m, however could offer no further explanation. Trainer G. Heinrich’s representative Mr A. Parker indicated that the horse would be sent for an immediate spell. A swab sample was taken from LOCHTORIO.

Race 2: ST CLAIR SHEETMETAL CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m
1st – Tom’s Luck 2nd – Feisty Lady 3rd – Harrisville Toff 4th – Dixie Flyer

Trainer J. McLachlan advised that TOM’S LUCK (A. Taylor), which was slow to begin last start and settled in the second half of the field, would be ridden in a more forward position today if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

HARRISVILLE TOFF (J. Byrne), THE BEST (C. Munce), SMART COOKIE (R. Jamieson) and SKUKUZA (T. Harrison) were slow to begin.

Stewards sought an explanation from C. Munce regarding the below market expectation performance of THE BEST. He stated that whilst he acknowledged that the gelding was not suited to today’s 1000m event, he was of the view that THE BEST did not finish its race off well and he was disappointed with the overall performance. Trainer B. Laming stated that in his opinion the horse is now looking for more ground and he would look to stepping the horse up over 1400m if possible and could offer no explanation for the poor performance other than the unsuitable distance.

Race 3: TACOMA PLUMBING & DRAINAGE P/L QTIS 3YO MAIDEN HP - 1000m
1st – Buddy Rocks 2nd – Malibu Dancer 3rd – Mashona 4th – Sharday

MALIBU DANCER (C. Munce) was slow to begin.

RUSTIC PLAY (M. O'Brien) jumped away very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, losing ground, before racing ungenerously throughout. Trainer H. Richardson was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of RUSTIC PLAY.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 2.

Race 4: CNW ELECTRICAL & DATA SUPPLIES MAIDEN H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Get On 2nd – Storm 3rd – Red Face 4th – Love hearts

On jumping away STORM (J. Taylor) was tightened for room between SHOW COAST (T. Harrison) and LOVE HEARTS (G. Colless), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

CHEEKY ORDER (R. Wiggins) jumped away awkwardly.

LOVE HEARTS (G. Colless) hung out throughout the race, made contact with SHOW COAST on a number of occasions approaching the 800m. Following this LOVE HEARTS continued to lay out and approaching the 400m took CHEEKY ORDER wider on the track, and near the 100m shifted out making heavy contact on two occasions with CHEEKY ORDER, causing both horses to become unbalanced and resulted in LOVE HEARTS being unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that LOVE HEARTS must barrier trial satisfactorily prior to its next start.

Near the 400m STORM, which improved to the inside of GET ON (J. Byrne), had to be steadied when that horse shifted in under pressure.

Over the concluding stages CHEEKY ORDER had to be steadied when tightened for room between LOVE HEARTS, which shifted out under pressure, and BUAKAW (K. Wharton), which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider after having been inclined to lay in from the 300m onwards. This also affected jockey Wharton’s ability to fully test BUAKAW over the concluding stages of the race.

Stewards questioned trainer D. Hansen regarding the tactics on COPPIN (D. Missen), which raced outside the lead today, which is in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Mr Hansen advised stewards that at its two most recent starts it has always been the intention to ride forward, however circumstances had not permitted this. Given the circumstances, stewards reminded Mr Hansen of his obligations under the rules.

A post-race veterinary examination of COPPIN (D. Missen) revealed the gelding to have pulled up distressed and suffering from the thumps. Trainer D. Hansen was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for COPPIN prior to its next start.

Race 5: NIAGARA FURNITURE FINISHES PTY LTD CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Heir Express 2nd – Rogertheredneck 3rd – Lady Fleming 4th – Corston

LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE (E. Wilkinson) was a late scratching at 2.51 p.m. by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice that the horse was lame. Trainer T. Miller was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on LUCK’S ON OUR SIDE be refunded in full, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

0 cent in the dollar for the Win – HEIR EXPRESS
7 cents in the dollar for place of winner – HEIR EXPRESS
8 cents in the dollar for 2nd place – ROGERTHEREDNECK
6 cents in the dollar for 3rd place – LADY FLEMING

NORTHERNER (J. Taylor) and UTILISM (R. Wiggins) were slow to begin.

UTILISM overraced during the early stages.

Approaching the 1000m ROGERTHEREDNECK (T. Huxham) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of LADY FLEMING (P. Hammersley). A short distance later P. Hammersley, the rider of LADY FLEMING, steadied the pace, causing ROGERTHEREDNECK to overrace and shift out to avoid that horse’s heels, which as a result caused FERTIRO (A. Taylor), which was racing to the outside, to be steadied. P. Hammersley was severely reprimanded for this incident.

OH SUNDAY (B. Derbyshire) hung out throughout the event.

CORSTON (L. Tarrant) raced wide throughout.

R. Wiggins reported to stewards his disappointment in the performance of UTILISM and added that the gelding overraced during the early stages and when asked for an effort after passing the 400m became awkward in its action, racing with its head in the air and appeared to resent being ridden aggressively, however he could offer no further explanation for the performance.

Race 6: ALL PEST QLD CLASS 4 H’CAP - 1800m
1st – Collector 2nd – Mightysui 3rd – Toy Ruler 4th – Zenawomann

The start of this race was delayed when TOY RULER (G. Goold), which lost a plate en route to the barriers, had to be reshod.

MIGHTYSUI (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.

WORLD BY NIGHT (A. Spinks), which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start by LOTS OF HEART (E. Wilkinson), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted in.

LOTS OF HEART raced wide during the early stages.

WORLD BY NIGHT raced wide throughout.

Apprentice G. Goold, the rider of TOY RULER, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 500m after improving on to the heels of LOFTY'S MATE (T. Harrison), and after remaining there for a number of strides, he elected to shift out in an attempt to obtain a position behind FUMA (C. Munce), resulting in COLLECTOR (J. Byrne) being taken out on to the rightful running of LOTS OF HEART, which was tightened for room between COLLECTOR and MIGHTYSUI, which was racing to the outside, resulting in LOTS OF HEART being checked and losing ground. Apprentice Goold’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 14 October, and expire at midnight on Wednesday, 24 October 2012.

G. Colless, the rider of MANZANO, reported that the gelding became awkward in its action over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of MANZANO failed to find any abnormalities.

C. Munce reported to stewards that FUMA may not have appreciated today’s firmer racing surface as it did not stretch out comfortably throughout the event.

Trainer B. Brown advised stewards that WORLD BY NIGHT, which weakened badly over the concluding stages, would now be sent for a spell.

Race 7: QFFS & PRIME FOOD SERVICE MEATS BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP - 1200m
1st – Bellantina 2nd – Spurtastic 3rd – Sheedy 4th – Western Shadow

SHEEDY (R. Jamieson) overraced during the early stages and as a result improved to the inside of SPURTASTIC (G. Killen), which resulted in NAYNAY (A. Spinks) being forced to race in restricted room for a short distance leaving the 800m.

DANEODIN (M. Hellyer) raced wide throughout.

SHEEDY had difficulty obtaining clear running from the 300m until leaving the 100m.

Race 8: OFFICE NATIONAL CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m
1st – Tango King 2nd – Miss Margani 3rd – Tax Evader 4th – Spurfect

Trainer J. McLachlan advised that SPURFECT (P. Hammersley) would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. Despite being ridden aggressively the horse could not muster sufficient speed to take up a forward position and therefore raced in a midfield position.

Rider L. Cheshire advised stewards that connections had asked her to ride MISS MARGANI closer to the pace today. The horse was ridden accordingly.

NOT A LADY (A. Spinks) was slow to begin.

SAN FERNANDO (J. Taylor), which was slow to begin, tailed off in the event and was inspected by the veterinary surgeon who reported that he could find no abnormalities at the time of inspection.

Shortly after the start TAX EVADER (G. Goold) shifted in and made contact with the hind quarters of TANGO KING (A. Allen) and had to be restrained.

JOH THE PAINTER (T. Harrison) raced wide throughout.

DON’S SURPRISE (M. Hellyer) overraced for a short distance approaching the 1200m.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the performance and handling of TAX EVADER. Evidence was taken from trainer J. Caught and rider apprentice G. Goold. Of particular concern to stewards was the positioning of TAX EVADER in the early stages when racing in a midfield position, which is in contrast to the horse’s previous racing pattern in that it has led. Apprentice Goold was also asked to explain his reasons for allowing MIRROR MAN (K. Wharton) to cross his running approaching the 800m and furthermore he was questioned regarding his failure to shift out away from MIRROR MAN to secure clear running rounding the home turn when it appeared he had opportunity to do so, which resulted in him being held up for clear running in the home straight until leaving the 200m where he was obliged to stop riding and direct his mount out. Mr Caught advised stewards that he had instructed apprentice Goold not to lead as it had not been his intention for the gelding to lead in its previous starts. Apprentice Goold stated that he was satisfied that TAX EVADER was travelling well approaching the 800m and had relaxed and he did not wish to bustle the horse to attempt to hold MIRROR MAN out as he believed this would cause the horse to overrace. He added that the reason he did not shift wider on the track near the 600m was that TAX EVADER stepped in abruptly near the 500m and shortly afterwards DON’S SURPRISE improved quickly to his outside and this caused him to be unable to shift wider without causing interference to DON’S SURPRISE. Apprentice Goold further added that with hindsight he would have been better served shifting to the outside of MIRROR MAN at that point. Stewards considered the explanation and advised apprentice Goold that given his instructions, they were satisfied with his riding during the early stages, however believed he had erred at the point approaching the 500m by not positioning his mount outside MIRROR MAN. In the circumstances, taking into account the relative inexperience of apprentice Goold and the circumstances leaving the 600m, stewards were not satisfied that the error should result in a charge under the rules, however apprentice Goold was admonished and instructed that he should show more initiative in similar circumstances. Trainer J. Caught was reminded of his obligations under the rules to notify stewards of any alteration in tactics.
