Race 1: McNally Family Class 6 H'cap – 1800m
1st – Trajet 2nd – Flying Dynamite 3rd – Billum 4th - Lohan
Approaching the 1600m, MUSIC MAESTRO (J. Hoopert) was steadied when racing between LOHAN (G. Cooksley) and TRAJET (C. Munce), which shifted out when inclined to hang. TRAJET continued to hang and overrace until approaching the 1300m.
Race 2: Beach To Bush Cleaning Class 2 H'cap – 1600m
1st – Tax Evader 2nd – Albion 3rd – Gypsy Heart 4th – I Excel
Stewards questioned apprentice K. Matheson regarding the tactics adopted on TAX EVADER. Of particular concern to stewards were his actions during the early stages when it appeared after initially having an opportunity to stride forward to a position in the lead he failed to do so and then restrained TAX EVADER at a point approaching the 1200m which allowed MACHO CAT (R. Hancock) to improve to his inside. Apprentice Matheson explained that he had not been given specific instructions as to where to position the gelding, and after beginning well was not intent on leading and therefore elected to steady, however TAX EVADER lost ground quicker than anticipated when restrained. Stewards advised K. Matheson that his ride during the early stages lacked initiative and when he restrained approaching the 1200m he did so too quickly and allowed his horse to be in a position which allowed MACHO CAT to improve to his inside, however in the circumstances stewards did not deem his actions culpable under the rules.
Stewards questioned R. Hancock regarding his actions from the 800m in that he rode vigorously from that point when positioned outside the lead when it appeared he had opportunity to steady his mount and settle in this position. Stewards were concerned his actions had a detrimental effect on both MACHO CAT and ALBION. Jockey Hancock explained that he is of the opinion that MACHO CAT has a tendency relax quickly in its races and felt that pressuring the horse from that point would benefit the gelding’s chances in the event. Stewards advised jockey Hancock that his ride lacked judgement and would have been better served by easing his mount at the 800m rather than riding the gelding along, particularly when MACHO CAT commenced to lose ground prior to the home turn.
Race 3: Impact Office Supplies Class 3 Plate – 1300m
1st – Merryanna 2nd – Wind Wand 3rd – Fist Of Fury 4th – Mountain Of Gold
Due to transport difficulties, A. Hearn was unable to fulfil his engagement on MOUNTAIN OF GOLD and was replaced by R. Jamieson.
THREEBYTWO (D. Browne) overraced during the early stages.
Near the 400m, MERRYANNA (D. Tanti) shifted out to secure clear running and in doing so made heavy contact with COUNTRY PRINCE (R. Hurdle).
Race 4: Shadforths Civil Engineering Class 1 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Man Of Money 2nd – Mount Morgan 3rd – Harrisville Toff 4th – My Mirage

Trainer D. Deans was reprimanded for failing to produce the Document of Description for I GOT EXCITED. Trainer D. Deans was advised that I GOT EXCITED would not be permitted to start until the registration papers for I GOT EXCITED are produced.
Trainer R. Maund was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for PERSIAN EYES by the prescribed time.
The start of this race was delayed when HEARTFELT QUEST (C. Munce) required farrier attention for both hind legs.
SAMMY LOU (T. Harrison) and I GET EXCITED (K. Matheson) jumped away awkwardly, made contact with the barrier partition and lost ground.
SPINNING HEART (R. Myers) hung out throughout the race and near the 200m was tightened for room after improving to the inside of the tiring SAMMY LOU (T. Harrison), which laid in under pressure.
J. Stanley, rider of SIPPIN’BUNDY, reported to stewards that at no stage during the event did the gelding travel comfortably and was inclined to lay out rounding the home turn, and when placed under pressure in the home straight failed to run on. Trainer Mr E. Hayes confirmed his disappointment in today’s performance, adding that the gelding had worked well in the week leading up to today’s event, and that he had also supported SIPPIN’BUNDY. A post-race veterinary examination of SIPPIN’BUNDY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities apart from a small abrasion on the near-side hock. In light of today’s performance, stewards advised Mr Hayes that SIPPIN’BUNDY would be required to officially trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to its next race start.
Stewards questioned D. Browne regarding the performance of BULLET ONE. He stated that after obtaining a favourable position he pressured the gelding approaching the home turn, however the gelding failed to run on and was very disappointing over the concluding stages. He added that, in his opinion, the weight impost of 59 kilograms may have had a bearing on today’s performance, however he could offer not further explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of BULLET ONE revealed the gelding to have a slower than normal recovery rate. Trainer T. Sears undertook to advise stewards of any abnormality that comes to light in the coming days which may have had a bearing on today’s performance.
Race 6: Steuler Kch Australia Maiden Plate – 1200m
1st – Bruntwood 2nd – Peterbonetti 3rd – Black Money 4th – Sargenolly
The start of this race was delayed when SARGENOLLY proved difficult to load. Trainer M. Kropp was advised that a warning would be placed SARGENOLLY regarding its barrier manners.
ROCK QUIZ (G. Killen) blundered badly on jumping away and shifted in, making contact with PERSIAN EYES (K. Wharton). As a result of this, both horses lost ground.
SARGENOLLY (T. Harrison), which was slow to begin, was slightly hampered shortly after the start between DECOOLCAT (R. Hancock) and PETERBONETTI (T. Huxham), which shifted out.
Near the 800m, PETERBONETTI shifted in of its own accord, making heavy contact with the running rail, and as a result lost ground. BRUNTWOOD (E. Wilkinson), which was following, was then obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of PETERBONETTI, and in doing to forced DECOOLCAT wider on the track.
A. Taylor reported that BLACK MONTY overraced during the early stages.
Both ROCK QUIZ (G. Killen) and DECOOLCAT raced greenly throughout.
Race 7: Raw Group Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Miss Margani 2nd – Hushofexpectation 3rd – Get On 4th – Chief Bright Star
STREET MASTER (M. Hellyer) and GET ON (T. Harrison) were both slow to begin.
HUSHOFEXPECTATION (D. Browne) was held up from the home turn until leaving the 300m.
L. Tarrant, rider of the 4th placegetter, CHIEF BRIGHT START, pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b), in that he failed to ride his mount out to the finish of the race and was fined $200. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account apprentice Tarrant’s relative inexperience and furthermore could not be satisfied that his actions had cost his mount 3rd placing.
When questioned regarding his actions during the early stages of the home straight, L. Tarrant, rider of CHIEF BRIGHT STAR, stated that he heard a call from the rider to his inside, T. Harrison (GET ON), and he elected to shift out as he was of the belief that jockey Harrison was being tightened for room, however in directing his mount out, this resulted in E. Wilkinson, rider of FRAYED, having to shift out to avoid the heels of CHIEF BRIGHT STAR. In all the circumstances, stewards were satisfied that L. Tarrant’s actions could not be considered careless.
A post-race veterinary examination of STREET MASTER, which tailed off, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
