Subject to further submissions from B. El-Issa, a fine of $100 will be imposed for his failure to fulfil his engagement on DEFAULT. G. Killen was substituted as the rider of that runner.

VICTORY HOTEL – Overraced for a short distance passing the 1600m.

ELECTRIC DEE JAY – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight. L. Cassidy advised stewards that in his opinion the gelding did not run out a strong 1800m. Lost its off hind plate in running.

DEFAULT – Retired from the event after passing the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the horse had suffered a bleeding attack. Trainer D. Gardiner was advised that DEFAULT will be ineligible to race for a period of 3 months, and before starting again must gallop satisfactorily over 1000m in the presence of a steward.

Race 2: SEAVIEW RESORT APARTMENTS MAIDEN H'CAP – 1600M

LADY DALCATRAZZE – Shifted out near the 200m when weakening, made contact with another runner and became unbalanced. Trainer P. Campbell will be advised that in light of today’s performance a warning would be placed on the horse and should it perform in a similar manner, consideration will be given to barring the horse from TAB venues. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken.

WHAKATOI – Commenced to overrace when the pace slackened leaving the 1000m. Held up after entering the home straight. Tightened for room near the 200m and made heavy contact with other runners. Stewards asked apprentice S. Fawke to explain his tactics during the middle stages when near the 1000m his mount commenced to overrace due to the pace slackening, and his reasons for not allowing the horse to stride forward rather than attempt to restrain when he had opportunity to improve his position at that point of the race. Apprentice Fawke explained that with hindsight he realised that this was an option he should have taken and accepted that he had erred at that point of the race. Stewards agreed with apprentice Fawke, however felt that the error in judgement was not so unreasonable as to hold him culpable under the rules and took no further action. Lost its near fore plate in running.

SEE CRUISE – Commenced to overrace when the pace slackened leaving the 1000m, and shortly afterwards was ridden aggressively to take up a position outside the lead approaching the 600m.

EYEFORIT – Held up rounding the home turn and continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running until the 100m.

CIRCUIT BREAKER – Slow to begin. Stewards questioned M. Cahill regarding the performance of this gelding, which took no competitive part in the event. He stated that the horse raced greenly and despite his urgings would not stretch out. He added that the horse hung from the 800m until entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards advised trainer R. Heathcote that in light of today’s performance CIRCUIT BREAKER would be required to officially trial prior to its next start.

THREE BEERS PLEASE – Raced wide throughout.

DUAN MAJOR – Slow to begin.

COLD BLOODED – Apprentice S. Fawke reported to stewards that he was obliged to pressure the horse throughout the race in order to hold a position at the tail of the field. He added that the horse raced greenly throughout, however responded to his riding over the concluding stages and was doing its best work in the final 100m. He added that he was pleased with the performance and indicated that the horse would benefit from a step up in distance.

TANZANITE – Stewards questioned trainer S. Kendrick regarding the tactics adopted on the horse, which led in today’s event, which was in contrast to the horse’s most recent start. Mr Kendrick indicated that it had not been his intention to lead, only to be positive out of the barriers. Stewards then questioned L. Tarrant regarding the tactics. He indicated that after giving the horse a push out of the barriers it responded quickly and in order to cross horses to the inside he allowed the horse to stride forward and take up the lead. The explanation was noted.

Race 6: RAY WHITE CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M

NO MAGIC NEEDED – Slow to begin. Had to be restrained from heels leaving the 800m and raced wide. C. Munce stated that he had wanted to position his mount closer to the lead, however it could not muster early speed from the wide alley and he felt that this was as a result of coming back from 1400m last start. He added that the horse was under pressure rounding the home turn and was disappointing. Trainer B. Baldwin expressed his disappointment in the performance and added that it was now his intention to step the horse up in distance. Mr Baldwin undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.

IONA FAST ONE – P. Holmes lodged an objection against LUCKY LEISH being declared the winner, alleging interference between the 400m and the 200m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, stewards did not believe that IONA FAST ONE had suffered any inconvenience as a result of any shift by LUCKY LEISH and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry P. Holmes was fined $200 for lodging what stewards deemed to be a frivolous objection.

GENTLE GIANT – Slow to begin.

OMISSION – Tightened for room near the 200m, taken out across heels, lost ground and had to be checked. P. Holmes, the rider of IONA FAST ONE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he directed his mount out around heels, causing the tightening to OMISSION.
