TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB
SATURDAY 14TH JULY 2001

Stewards: D Griffiths (Chairman), W Bethel, J McIntosh, P Cooper
Rail: Out 4 metres from the 1000 metres to the home turn and 3 metres in the straight.

RACE 1 2YO BREEDERS’ PLATE 1200 METRES 9 STARTERS
Jockey R Gallacher replaced G Kliese on ANOTHER SOUTHERN when Jockey G Kliese could not make the weight. G Kliese was fined $100 AR120(b). GRASON and PRINCE CLANG were both slow to begin. Approaching the 900 metres ANOTHER SOUTHERN shifted in placing POWDER PUFF GIRL and LA SOEUR which checked in restricted room. At an Inquiry Jockey S Watkins advised that LA SOEUR had baulked of its own accord and lost ground. Jockey R Gallacher (ANOTHER SOUTHERN) was reprimanded for causing the initial tightening. AR 137(a). PRINCE CLANG had a tendency to hang out throughout the event. GRASON raced greenly throughout the event and hung out making the home turn. This was brought to the attention of Trainer M Farrell. PRINCE CLANG and NORTHALEA bumped on two (2) occasions over the final 150 metres. An Inquiry will be held at a time and date to be fixed into a report from the starter that Jockey J Graham (ALBERT’S BLAZE) had disobeyed a direction.

RACE 2 CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1000 METRES 10 STARTERS
After being slow to begin TOP CITADEL was hampered by TURNPIKE which shifted in at the start. BALMORAL DRIVE over raced in the early and middle stages of the event.

RACE 3 OPEN HANDICAP 2100 METRES 12 STARTERS
At the 500 metres LET IT RIDE was checked off the heels of RACY DANCER when held up for clear running and unable to improve. A short distance later CHELLE’S PRIDE lost ground when racing between TOGNOTTI and RACY DANCER. At an Inquiry Jockey R Gallacher (CHELLE’S PRIDE) advised that CHELLE’S PRIDE when tiring commenced to hang in and that he checked the horse to avoid any tightening to runners to his inside.

RACE 4 MAIDEN HANDICAP 1640 METRES 9 STARTERS
MALTESE MEILEE was held up for clear running from the 550 metre mark and failed to secure the same until approaching the 250 metres.

RACE 5 CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1640 METRES 10 STARTERS
IGNATIONAL commenced to over race making the first turn and steadied away from the heels of ENVINO VERITAS. MAS FINA was held up for clear running making the home turn. Approaching the 200 metres MAS FINA was disappointed for a run. As a consequence Jockey R Ryan attempted to take a run to the inside of CROUTON however was again disappointed when CROUTON shifted in marginally.

RACE 6 CLASS 6 PLATE 1400 METRES 14 STARTERS
SWITCH MAKER was a late scratching at 2:25pm by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Bookmakers were ordered to draw a line and deductions of 8 cents the win and 9 cents the place on all bets made above that line were imposed. At the 1300 meters PIMPALA SPIRIT, BROTHER and ENSIGN all received severe crowding from AMPEZZO which shifted in. At an Inquiry Jockey D Bradbery (AMPEZZO) advised that he had initially been dictated in by DEVIL’S DEN (S Watkins). After taking into account all the evidence the Stewards granted Jockey D Bradbery the benefit of a grave doubt as to whether he had allowed sufficient room when crossing. Making the first turn ALLEZ SLEW improved to the inside of the heels of AMPEZZO where there was insufficient room and had to be steadied. Approaching the 900 metres TRAVELLIN’ MAN and BROTHER had to be steadied when YOUNG BRAVO shifted in. Jockey B Appo (YOUNG BRAVO) was advised to exercise care in similar circumstances. After passing the 300 metres DOWN PAYMENT had to be checked when it improved the inside of DOLLINGER which shifted in. Jockey G Kliese (DOLLINGER) was cautioned in relation to this incident.

RACE 7 LIGHTNING OPEN HANDICAP 1000 METRES 12 STARTERS
MISS FRILLY SOCKS jumped out and collided with BOWASTA at the start.


RACE 8 3YO HANDICAP 1400 METRES 14 STARTERS
Approaching the 1250 metres FAITHFUL ROSE shifted in and bumped STARASH which in turn was taken in onto TOBIANA. SOVEREIGN ROAD and JAZZAD which were racing to the inside of these runners were also crowded for room as a consequence. Jockey M Gray (FAITHFUL ROSE) was reprimanded and advised to allow more clearance when crossing. At the 900 metres FLYING ASCOT shifted in hampering POLISH COUNT. JAZZAD which was trailing POLISH COUNT had to be steadied. Jockey P Cullen (FLYING ASCOT) was cautioned in relation to this incident. At the 600 metres HEEL RUNON hung in onto FUME and BUNDALEER. FUME hung in down the running and as a consequence Jockey J Cairns was unable to fully test that gelding to the finish line.

RACE 9 CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 METRES 14 STARTERS
Apprentice L Buckingham (HARPOON) was reprimanded for only claiming 2.5kg of her 3kg allowance. (AR92). PEE JAY BLUE jumped awkwardly taking FLYING TOMBA out onto EVENSONG. CLYNSCO also jumped awkwardly and collided with LUBERTUS who was taken out onto TOP KNOCK. At the 1100 metres FLYING TOMBA had to be checked when racing between PEE JAY BLUE which shifted out marginally and HARPOON (Apprentice L Buckingham) which shifted in. Whilst it was established that PEE JAY BLUE by shifting out had contributed to the incident Apprentice L Buckingham (HARPOON) was none the less advised to allow sufficient clearance when crossing in future. At the 250 metres EL ALAMADOR which was tiring shifted in and away from EBIT. FLYING TOMBA was held up for clear running in the straight. Jockey S Watkins (FLYING TOMBA) was severely reprimanded for failing to weigh in for 4th . AR144.

ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED

General: Trainer J Wills was fined $100 by being negligent for failing to renew her licence for the current season. AR8(e).
