Jockey P. Cullen was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 550 metres he permitted FROG to shift outwards when insufficiently clear of ARROWIN (J. Stopps), which had to be checked and lost its position in the field. Jockey P. Cullen was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Saturday 25th October 2008, up to and including 1st November 2008 (2 NQ meetings).
TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB, TUESDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2008:
Jockey P. Cullen pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct under A.R.175(q). Jockey Cullen was suspended from riding in races for a period of one calendar month, to be served cumulatively with the suspension imposed at Bowen on 4th October 2008, in accordance with A.R. 196(2). The suspension is to commence at midnight on 1st November 2008, up to and including midnight on 1st December 2008. In addition, stewards imposed a fine of $1,000. Acting under LR36(h), stewards suspended the fine for a period of 12 months.
Race 8: Pro Liquor Solutions Class 1 Handicap, 1000 metres:
Jockey I. Toward, the rider of GENERAL SPARK, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 300 metres he directed his mount outwards when insufficiently clear of BEAU REGIS (P. Cullen), which was forced out across the running of MENORAH (G. Cullen), which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of BEAU REGIS. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for 4 NQ meetings, a period to commence at the expiration of the suspension imposed following Race 8 today, that is, at midnight on 1st November 2008, up to and including midnight on 18th November 2008.
Late Riding Changes:
When Apprentice M. Speers failed to arrive on course by the prescribed time, due to transport difficulties, and no Apprentice rider was available, Jockey I. Fry was substituted as the rider of NUCLEAR DRAMA in Race 6. Apprentice Speers was informed that he must furnish stewards with documentation supporting the reason for his failure to fulfil his engagement.
When Jockey T. Pannell was to be overweight, the following substitutions were made: Race 1, Jockey G. Lemos to ride D’LORDSON; Race 2, Jockey J. Long to ride RUN LIKE A DHEER; Race 4, Jockey J. Long to ride CALCURBY. Jockey Pannell was fined $300 under A.R.120(b).
Race 1: Distribution Direct Maiden Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – D’LORDSON 2nd – PEOPLE’S CHOICE 3rd – STAWELL DASH 4th – ESTRATA
On jumping ESTRATA (C. Eaton) and D’LORDSON (G. Lemos) came together, resulting in D’LORDSON being taken out and brushing QUARRYMAN (A. Spinks).
For the majority of the event NEBO (I. Toward) and CHEDDITE (G. Kliese) raced wide.
Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight STAWELL DASH (I. Fry) was held up and unable to obtain clear running .
Rounding the home turn ESTRATA (C. Eaton) improved up onto the heels of PEOPLE’S CHOICE (F. Edwards) and had to be steadied.
After straightening for home CHEDDITE (G. Kliese) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of NEBO (I. Toward).
Near the 150 metres NEBO (I. Toward) had to be checked to avoid the heels of STAWELL DASH (I. Fry) which, after commencing to lay out from the 500 metres, shifted out abruptly after rounding the home turn and continued to lay out for the remainder of the race. In the incident Jockey Toward accidentally dropped his whip. QUARRYMAN (A. Spinks), which was following, was also hampered in consequence. Jockey I. Fry was reprimanded as stewards were of the opinion that he erred by electing to use his whip in the right hand although STAWELL DASH had exhibited a tendency to lay out.
Race 2: Dennis Payne Transport Maiden Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – MEDOWIE OPAL 2nd – FLY TO WIN/HELLO BOSS (DH) 4th – MISERLY
When the start was effected LEICA CROWNIE (S. Kaya) and CLASSIC ONE (N. Day) stood flat-footed and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr F. Wieland was advised that LEICA CROWNIE (S. Kaya) must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a jump-out before being permitted to race again.
At the start LIKE A DHEER (J. Long) was tightened for room between IDEALLY READY (A. Spinks) and SYMPHONY HALL (F. Edwards), which was taken out by HELLO BOSS (P. Cullen), which began awkwardly.
HYPATICA (J. Felix) began awkwardly and then was inclined to lay out for the majority of the event.
FLY TO WIN (Apprentice J. Wood) was held up and unable to obtain clear running from rounding the home turn until after the 200 metres.
Following the race trainer Mr J. Manzelmann reported that CLASSIC ONE (N. Day), which performed poorly, may be suffering from a seasonal condition. A post-race veterinary examination of CLASSIC ONE (N. Day) did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. However the veterinary surgeon confirmed the trainer’s opinion that the horse may be suffering a seasonal condition.
Race 3: Townsville Customs & Forwarding Class 1 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – ENDANGERED 2nd – FINAL ROAR 3rd – LACHLANS LAGOON 4th – THE CAT’S BACK
HANURABI (Apprentice P. Edwards) began awkwardly, raced ungenerously in the early stages, and near the 600 metres shifted out away from the heels of LA SCALA DIVA (C. Eaton) and in doing so forced KEEN ON YOU (P. Cullen) wider on the track.
At approximately the 1200 metres GILDING THE LILY (G. Cullen) had to be steadied when tightened for room by ÉCLAIR FILANTE (I. Toward), which in turn was taken in by LACHLANS LAGOON (G. Kliese), which was taken in slightly by ENDANGERED (A. Spinks). Jockey A. Spinks was reprimanded.
In the early and middle stages LA SCALA DIVA (C. Eaton) raced wide.
Near the 500 metres GILDING THE LILY (G. Cullen) improved up onto the heels of ÉCLAIR FILANTE (I. Toward) and had to be steadied.
At about the 450 metres FINAL ROAR (N. Day) was placed in restricted room between ZIVADOR (J. Felix) and KEEN ON YOU (P. Cullen), which shifted in slightly.
Approaching the 200 metres LA SCALA DIVA (C. Eaton), which was weakening, had to be eased momentarily to avoid the heels of FINAL ROAR (N. Day), which shifted out to improve.
Race 4: Trailer Sales NQ Pallarenda Stakes QTIS 2YO Maiden Plate - 1000 metres
1st – KISS ME KATY 2nd – SIENA’S PRIDE 3rd – APACHE PUP 4th – SASSY ‘N’ BRASH
After arriving on course SASSY ‘N’ BRASH was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that the filly had sustained a laceration to the lateral near hind cannon when being unloaded from the float, but was fit to start.
On jumping JUSTABITOFSILVER (G. Lemos) was severely hampered when tightened for room between KISS ME KATY (I. Fry) and APACHE PUP (G. Cullen), which shifted out.
At the start HAILING (G. Kliese) and CALCURBY (J. Long) brushed.
In the early stages JUSTABITOFSILVER (G. Lemos) raced ungenerously.
Near the 200 metres HAILING (G. Kliese), which shifted ground rounding the home turn, shifted in, resulting in CALCURBY (J. Long) being taken in away from HAILING, and in YEAH MATE (A. Spinks), which was following, having to be steadied to avoid the heels of CALCURBY.
When questioned Jockey N. Day and trainer Mr T. Rowe were unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of JESSE GIRL. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Mr Rowe undertook to inform stewards should anything be amiss with the horse in the days following the event.
Race 5: Trailer Sales NQ Weight for Age - 1000 metres
1st – MINI VIEW 2nd – CAPTAIN WHELAND 3rd – TIPPU TIP 4th – HOW GOOD IS HE
On jumping TIPPU TIP (F. Edwards) and NASTY LION (I. Toward) made contact.
Stewards questioned Jockey T. Pannell, the rider of GUNNERS BARRACKS, as to his failure to take a run to the outside of HOW GOOD IS HE (P. Cullen) and to the inside of MINI VIEW (N. Day) shortly after straightening. Jockey Pannell stated that he believed that at that stage of the race his best option was to endeavour to find runs to the inside. Stewards advised Jockey Pannell that in their opinion he had made an error of judgment in that he should have endeavoured to shift MINI VIEW out slightly, which would have enabled him to persevere in obtaining a run between HOW GOOD IS HE and MINI VIEW.
Race 6: Haughton Engineering Class 2 Handicap - 1000 metres
1st – BIG BANANA 2nd – ELVIS AARON 3rd – NUCLEAR DRAMA 4th – DEMOS
SIMONE’S GOT CLASS (S. Kaya) began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with DEMOS (C. Eaton).
On jumping MEDOWIE STORM (Apprentice P. Edwards) shifted out and made contact with AFTERMATH (G. Kliese).
DIAMOND PURSUIT (J. Felix), BEAUCAPPA (G. Cullen) and CAPITAL FLOW (Apprentice J. Wood) raced wide throughout.
Jockey G. Cullen, the rider of BEAUCAPPA, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at the 600 metres and make contact with POWER LINES (P. Cullen), resulting in MEDOWIE STORM (Apprentice P. Edwards) being tightened for room and taken in onto SIMONE’S GOT CLASS (S. Kaya). MEDOWIE STORM and SIMONE’S GOT CLASS bumped on several occasions and as a result MEDOWIE STORM lost its position in the field.
At about the 200 metres SIMONE’S GOT CLASS (S. Kaya) shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of BEAUCAPPA (G. Cullen). SIMONE’S GOT CLASS then shifted back in and had to be steadied off the heels of CAPITAL FLOW (Apprentice J. Wood).
Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of DIAMOND PURSUIT (J. Felix). After taking evidence from Jockey Felix and trainer Mr E. Sewell, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed.
Race 7: Dennis Payne Transport Class 4 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – KANETOSHI KING 2nd – PUDDYTAT 3rd – LOW PROFILE 4th – MOTEUR LISSE
WISHFORADIAMOND (T. Pannell) and KANETOSHI KING (Apprentice J. Wood) bumped on jumping.
YOUBEAUT (D. Evans), which blundered slightly at the start, was further hampered shortly after the start when tightened for room between GROMM (F. Edwards) and HIGHER YIELD (N. Day), which shifted out abruptly. YOUBEAUT then over-raced until near the 600 metres and near the 100 metres had to be steadied off the heels of SATZERO (J. Felix).
Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of YOUBEAUT (D. Evans). After taking evidence from Jockey D. Evans and trainer Mr D. Hansen, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination of YOUBEAUT did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
Race 8: Distribution Direct Class 3 Plate – 1200m
1st – DRAGONISI 2nd – LUCKY RULER 3rd – SUNNY WILL 4th – DIAGRAM
Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey D. Simmons, the rider of DIAGRAM which finished fourth, against LUCKY RULER (F. Edwards) being declared second, and SUNNY WILL (I. Toward) being declared third, alleging interference inside the final 100 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the official patrol films, and taking into account their own observations, stewards found that near the 100 metres DIAGRAM was inconvenienced when LUCKY RULER shifted in slightly and SUNNY WILL shifted out. However, taking into consideration the margins between the horses involved, stewards could not be satisfied that had the interference not occurred DIAGRAM would not have finished ahead of SUNNY WILL or LUCKY RULER. Accordingly, both protests were dismissed and the placings ordered to stand. Subsequently
Jockey I. Toward pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the 100 metres he allowed SUNNY WILL to shift out when insufficiently clear of DIAGRAM (D. Simmons), which had obtained a run between SUNNY WILL and LUCKY RULER (F. Edwards). As a result DIAGRAM had to be checked. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight Saturday, 18th October 2008, up to and including midnight on 1st November 2008 (2NQ meetings).
FOR NOW (C. Eaton) began awkwardly and made contact with GENERAL SPARK (Apprentice J. Wood).
On jumping LUCKY RULER (F. Edwards) was hampered when crowded for room between GAFFE (M. O’Connell) and SUNNY WILL (I. Toward), which shifted in.
In the early stages DIAGRAM (D. Simmons) over-raced.
Approaching the 1100m, DRAGONISI (N. Day) shifted in and tightened the running of CROWNALOT (P. Cullen), which had to be steadied.
Passing the 500 metres UNTOUCHABELLE (App. P Edwards) which was laying out, had to be steadied off the heels of CULLENARY (I. Fry), which was taken in slightly by SUNNY WILL (I. Toward). A short distance later, DIAGRAM (D. Simmons) had to be eased when over racing on the heels of UNTOUCHBELLE (P. Edwards).
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
