Apprentice L. Tilley was fined $200 for failing to claim down to his riding weight on AIN’T SHE SWEET (Race 2), CANSHEBEE (Race 4), JUST AS SWEET (Race 5) and MURPHY’S SUNRISE (Race 6). In assessing penalty, stewards took into account L. Tilley’s previous good record in relation to these matters.

Race 1: Mainz Developments Class 3 Plate – 1300m
Connections advised that UNPUBLISHED CRITIC, which led last start, would be ridden with cover if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
MAY RAIN (L. Tilley) began awkwardly and lost ground.
SPOT ON MAGGIE (R. Goltz) was slow to begin.
After being caught wide early, LIGHTNING VAULT (S. Bogenhuber) was ridden forward and obtained a position outside the leader near the 700m.
Passing the 600m, UNPUBLISHED CRITIC (N. Tomizawa) was momentarily forced to steady to avoid the heels of MAY RAIN.
Rounding the home turn, SPOT ON MAGGIE was momentarily forced to race in restricted room to the inside of SIPPIN’BUNDY (A. Fancourt), which shifted out abruptly and made contact with MAY NELLY (M. O'Brien).
ON ICE NOW (J. Orman) and MAY NELLY raced wide for the majority of the race.
On return to scale, jockey R. Goltz advised stewards he was held up for clear running and unable to improve on SPOT ON MAGGIE from the 400m until near the 200m, however when ridden along over the concluding stages, the mare failed to respond to his riding and, in his opinion, proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of SPOT ON IMAGE revealed mare to be significantly lame in the off hind leg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for SPOT ON IMAGE prior to its next race start.
Race 2: Charlton Tyre Service BM80 H'cap – 1200m
After riding in this race, apprentice M. McKenzie became ill and was stood down from his engagement on POCILLO in Race 3 and was replaced by A. Fancourt, and by B. Newport as the rider of HAPPYANDYOUKNOWIT in Race 6.
BLOODED (S. Drake) jumped with its head in the air and lost ground.
M. O’Brien, rider of CAPPIN JACK, lost the use of her near-side stirrup iron shortly after the start and after being unable to regain the use of that iron she removed her right foot from the stirrup iron, placing her at a significant disadvantage for the remainder of the race.
Approaching the 400m, STARSTREAMED (G. Geran) was disappointed for a run between NEW DAY RISING (N. Yamada) and TEA TATTLE (C. Spry), both of which shifted ground, and as a result was forced to ease.
Rounding the home turn, STARSTREAMED was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running.
In the early stages of the home straight, TEA TATTLE, when attempting to obtain a narrow run between CAPPIN JACK and BLOODED, shifted out and made contact with BLOODED.
Near the 200m, CAPPIN JACK, when tiring, shifted in and made contact with STARSTREAMED.
Stewards questioned S. Bogenhuber in relation to the disappointing performance of SPIRIT OF LIBERTY. Miss Bogenhuber advised that she obtained a good position outside the leader throughout the event, however when placed under pressure rounding the home turn, her mount failed to respond to her riding and proved disappointing. Jockey Bogenhuber further advised that, in her opinion, the mare may have come to the end of its preparation.
R. Goltz reported on returning to scale that COUNTERSPY had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
Race 3: XXXX Gold Class 1 H'cap – 1100m
BOURGEOIS BABE (G. Geran) was slow to begin.
POCILLO (A. Fancourt) began very awkwardly and got its head up at the start and shifted in, making contact with FLYING RYAN (J. Orman) .
Near the 900m, POCILLO got its head in the air whilst being steadied. RELEVANT GIRL (B. Ainsworth), which was racing back and to the inside of POCILLO, also got its head up when being restrained and shifted out across the heels of POCILLO and lost ground.
RELEVANT GIRL (B. Ainsworth) hung out rounding the home turn and shifted wider on the track.
POCILLO (A. Fancourt) was held up for clear running and unable to be tested over the final 100m of the race.
BARE FEET (D. Green) hung in under pressure in the home straight.
J. Orman, rider of FLYING RYAN, was reprimanded for excessive use of his whip on a horse out of contention.
SEIZE THE FIRE (L. Tilley) raced wide for the majority of the race.
Race 4: 102.7 FM Class 2 H'cap – 1625m
The start was delayed slightly when MY MIRAGE proved difficult to load.
ILLUDE (D. McIntosh) was slow to begin.
Approaching the 1500m, SEXTANT (K. Yoshida) was tightened for room and was forced to ease when racing between ROCKLEA RAIDER (M. O'Brien) and KING OF JACKS (J. Orman), both of which shifted ground. ROCKLEA RAIDER raced wide for the remainder of the race.
Near the 1400m, CANSHEBEE (L. Tilley) made contact with the running rail and became unbalanced.
STEEL TO THE HEEL (G. Geran) raced ungenerously whilst being restrained in the early stages of the event.
After being caught wide in the early stages, MY MIRAGE (B. Ainsworth) was allowed to stride forward to obtain a forward position near the 900m, however was forced to continue to race 3 wide for the remainder of the race.
SEXTANT (K. Yoshida) hung in badly when placed under pressure in the home straight.
STEEL TO THE HEEL shifted out rounding the home turn to obtain clear running and in doing so forced KING OF JACKS (J. Orman) and ROCKLEA RAIDER wider on the track.
On return to scale, L. Tilley reported that, in his opinion, CANSHEBEE felt short in its action following the event. A post race veterinary examination of CANSHEBEE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 5: Wimmers Soft Drinks Maiden H'cap – 1625m
Connections advised that from the wide barrier AHA I SEE will attempt to be ridden in a more forward position on the pace if circumstances permit. The horse subsequently obtained a midfield position.
STAR THOMAS (D. McIntosh) was slow to begin.
POET LAUREATE (R. Goltz) was slow to begin and as a result settled further back in the field then anticipated.
Near the 1300m, STUCK FOR WORDS (S. Bogenhuber) was momentarily tightened for room and forced to ease when SHINZIGZAG (B. Evans) shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Leaving the 1300m, MATAWIN (B. Powell) was tightened for room and forced to check when racing between PAPAL APPOINTMENT (K. Yoshida), which shifted out marginally, and SHINZIGZAG, which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
Approaching the 1000m, SPRUNGYA (N. Ogura) made contact with the running rail, and then shifted out, making contact with DR JAZZ.
Near the 900m, SPRUNGYA again shifted out and made heavy contact with DR JAZZ (J. Orman) , forcing that runner wider on the track. In the circumstances, N. Ogura, rider of SPRUNGYA, was reprimanded and advised to show far greater care to his fellow riders.
Leaving the 800m, JUST AS SWEET (L. Tilley) improved on to the heels of DR JAZZ, resulting in JUST AS SWEET clipping the heels of that horse.
POET LAUREATE was held up for clear running and unable to improve from the 500m until near the 300m.
Race 6: Hot FM Maiden H'cap – 1300m
The start was initially delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate trot and dog race.
The start was further delayed with MUSICIAN proved difficult to load.
NOTHING BUT GLORY (M. Abe) was slow to begin.
LA BELLA GRACE (T. Brooker), MURPHY’S SUNRISE (L. Tilley), HAPPYANDYOUKNOWIT (B. Newport) and OUR BOY (N. Yamada) were all tightened for room on jumping away between NORTHERN CULTURE (A. Fancourt), which jumped with its head in the air, and EXCEEDINGLY BAY (D. Green), which shifted out.
CARNCOTTON (M. O'Brien) jumped inwards at the start and made contact with BILLABONG BIRD (J. Orman).
Near the 900m, EXCEEDINGLY BAY (D. Green) and LA BELLA GRACE were both tightened for room between PISTOLPACKINGPENNY (S. Bogenhuber) and NORTHERN CULTURE, which hung in despite the efforts of its rider.
LA BELLA GRACE shifted in abruptly near the 600m, and then shifted out, taking MUSICIAN (R. Payne) wider on the track.
BILLABONG BIRD (J. Orman) was held up for a short distance rounding the home turn.
Near the 600m, OUR BOY (N. Yamada) was momentarily forced to steady when racing to the inside of HAPPYANDYOUKNOWIT, which shifted in.
Leaving the 100m OUR BOY shifted in and away from EXCEEDINGLY BAY, which shifted in marginally. A short distance later, PISTOLPACKINGPENNY shifted out whilst tiring, resulting in OUR BOY being forced to shift out abruptly to avoid that runner’s heels and in doing so made heavy contact with EXCEEDINGLY BAY, which became unbalanced, and was forced to steady further to avoid the heels of BILLABONG BAY, which shifted in under pressure. Whilst stewards noted the incident was one of some significance, they were unable to attribute fault to any one rider, however did advise jockey S. Bogenhuber to exercise more care for initially allowing her mount to shift out under pressure , and also advised jockey N. Yamada to exercise more care for the manner in which he shifted out after being awkwardly placed at the heels of PISTOLPACKINGPENNY.
Approaching the finish line, CARNCOTTON was forced to steady to avoid the heels of PISTOLPACKINGPENNY, which shifted in when tiring.
NORTHERN CULTURE hung in throughout the race.
Stewards questioned trainer K. Geran in relation to the seemingly improved performance of LUCKS IN. Miss Geran stated that at its most recent start the gelding was forced to race wide throughout after beginning awkwardly, and furthermore had lost its off fore plate in running, which she felt was to the horse’s detriment. Miss Geran further advised that in her opinion the step up in distance today was to the advantage of LUCKS IN, which had been working well in preparation for today’s event. Stewards noted he explanation.
A post race veterinary examination of PISTOLPACKINGPENNY, which performed disappointingly, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer’s representative Mr N. Cameron undertook to report to stewards any abnormality which becomes apparent in the days following the race which may have had a bearing on today’s performance. A swab sample was taken.
Race 7: Membership Now Avail QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1100m
JANDY GIRL (G. Geran) and TIERES ROCK (B. Evans) were tightened for room at the start between LITTLE MOUNTAIN (R. Goltz) and WHATEVER WILL BE (C. Spry), which shifted out away from RAZZLING DAZZLER (N. Tomizawa), which jumped outwards.
Near the 700m, JANDY GIRL hung out across the heels of LITTLE MOUNTAIN and was forced to steady.
