Jockey Wolfgram advised that the horse travelled reasonably during the early stages however at the 600m when asked to improve into the race the filly failed to respond and proved disappointing. P. Wolfgram further added that the horse had worked well during the week and based on its trackwork he had expected a forward showing today. Ms Sears stated she was at a loss to explain the poor performance of COMMERCIALLY as the horse had worked well in preparation for today’s event and had expected a forward showing. Ms Sears however advised that, in her opinion, COMMERCIALY may have been affected by the heat. A post race veterinary examination of COMMERCIALLY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

K. Banks, rider of TELLINTAIMZ, reported that after being slowly away the gelding raced ungenerously with its head in the air in the early stages and resented racing between runners, which was the reason she settled further back in the field than anticipated.
A post race veterinary examination of THE NAKED COWBOY, which compounded over the final stages, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Subsequent to the event, trainer M. Goodwin advised it was his intention to have a further veterinary examination carried out on THE NAKED COWBY and that he would advise stewards of the results of such examination. Stewards questioned jockey K. Banks and trainer N. Hilton regarding the disappointing performance of ROCKEM. Ms Banks advised that after missing the start, ROCKEM was under pressure throughout and, in her opinion, only ran on fairly in the straight. Trainer Mr N. Hilton stated he was not entirely disappointed with the performance of the horse, which was having its first start and coming into the race without a trial and, in his opinion, would derive benefit from the race.

I LOVE TOBOUGGIE was declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 11 am after receiving advice from trainer D. Baker that the gelding had sustained a significant stone bruise and was unfit to race. Mr Baker was advised that he would be require to provide a veterinary clearance for I LOVE TOBOUGGIE prior to its next race start.
SHEZA FLASHLADY (K. Yoshida) overraced in the early and middle stages.
Stewards questioned trainer T. Sears and jockey K. Yoshida regarding the disappointing performance of SHEZA FLASHLADY. Jockey Yoshida stated that after beginning well his mount mount overraced in the early and middle stages of the race. He further added that after he elected to restrain near the 900m, from this point the filly failed to travel well in the race and as such proved disappointing. Jockey Yoshida further added that SHEZA FLASHLADY was up in class as well as up in the weights today, which may have contributed to the poor performance. Trainer Mr T. Sears advised that SHEZA FLASHLADY had worked well in preparation for today’s event and as such expected a forward showing. He added he felt the tempo set in the race was to the filly’s detriment, which resulted in it not finishing the race off as he expected. Mr Sears undertook to report to stewards any abnormalities which become apparent in the days following he race. He further added that SHEZA FLASHLADY would be sent for an immediate spell. A post race veterinary examination of SHEZA FLASHLADY failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Trainer E. Ropiha was advised that GOLDEN GLEAMS, which was found to have the presence of blood in one nostril following the event, would be required to gallop 1000 metres satisfactorily in the presence of a steward prior to its next race start.
Stewards questioned jockey J. Kehoe in relation to the tactics adopted on HEZA GURU, in particular in the early and middle stages of the race when he pressured his mount to obtain a forward position in the lead. Jockey Kehoe stated he was instructed to lead on HEZA GURU and in an attempt to follow instructions he continued to challenge for the lead until a point near the 900m where he was able to obtain this position after jockey K. Yoshida was able to restrain SHEZA FLASHLADY, which had been overracing. Stewards were critical of J. Kehoe’s ride in that it lacked judgement in that he should have endeavoured to restrain his mount when an opportunity arose for him after leaving the winning post on the first occasion, and in future he would be expected to show more initiative in his races.
