Race 1: BLACK TOYOTA CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Ablackahawka 2nd – Back To Abilene 3rd – Arctic Grey 4th – Gotadollar
Track temperature: 24 degrees Celsius
BLACK LEG BAY (D. Robinson), ABLACKAHAWKA (N. Tomizawa), GOTADOLLAR (M. O'Brien), SILVERADO (A. Best) and BIG MAX (J. Brown) were all tightened for room at the start between FLINDERS ROCK (R. Goltz) and ARCTIC GREY (S. Bogenhuber), which began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, almost dislodging its rider. As a result of this incident SILVERADO and BIG MAX both lost ground.
The saddle on SOSUEME (N. Yamada) shifted forward near the 1300m when the horse was being restrained, placing the rider at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
Near the 400m BLACK LEG BAY had to be eased when disappointed for a run between BACK TO ABILENE (J. Johnson) and BIG MAX, which shifted out. Apprentice J. Brown (BIG MAX) was reprimanded for permitting her mount to shift out when insufficiently clear.
BACK TO ABILENE (J. Johnson) laid in under pressure in the straight.
When asked to comment on the performance of BLACK LEG BAY, jockey D. Robinson advised that the colt was bumped heavily at the start, which resulted in his mount becoming unbalanced for a short distance in the early stages. He added that the horse travelled well during the middle stages of the event and when asked to improve into the race from the 500m it was disappointed for a run and lost its position at that point. Jockey Robinson further added that the horse worked home fairly to the line and whilst on face value its run may have appeared disappointing, he was not entirely dissatisfied with the performance as the horse had encountered interference at different times during the event. Stewards noted his explanation.
Race 2: RUBY RED FARMING MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M
1st – Diamond Delight 2nd – Magnetic Miss 3rd – Red Cashel 4th – A Snip Of Gold
Track temperature: 20 degrees Celsius
Shortly after the start TIME FOR INDI (N. Yamada) made heavy contact with FAIRY ROGUE (J. Letherby) when taken out by DIAMOND DELIGHT (N. Tomizawa), which shifted away from MAGNETIC MISS (J. Brown). Both FAIRY ROGUE and TIME FOR INDI lost ground as a result of this incident.
For a short distance leaving the 800m BULLOVA LADY (G. Geran) raced in restricted room between FAIRY ROGUE and DIAMOND DELIGHT. A short distance later DIAMOND DELIGHT improved on to the heels of MAGNETIC MISS whilst hanging out and was forced to ease.
Near the 650m A SNIP OF GOLD (A. Best) shifted out to improve and made contact with BOM CHICKA WAH WAH (J. Hoopert), forcing that runner wider on the track.
RED CASHEL (M. Dorrington) hung in during the middle stages of the event.
RED CASHEL was held up for clear running for a short distance leaving the 300m.
Near the 200m SET THE BAR (S. Bogenhuber) had to be steadied when tightened for room between MAGNETIC MISS and DIAMOND DELIGHT, both of which shifted ground marginally.
Approaching the 150m RED CASHEL had to be momentarily steadied when SET THE BAR laid in under pressure.
Race 3: OAKEY NEWSAGENCY QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M
1st – Carlson's Treasure 2nd – Players Choice 3rd – Casual Connections 4th – Todline
Track temperature: 20 degrees Celsius
GENERAL SON (S. Bogenhuber) reared over behind the barriers, dislodging its rider. As a result of jockey Bogenhuber being unable to fulfil her engagement following this incident, GENERAL SON was declared a late scratching at 6.21 p.m. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on GENERAL SON be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
30 cents in the dollar for the Win #2 – CARLSON'S TREASURE
23 cents in the dollar for place of winner #2 – CARLSON'S TREASURE
26 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #4 – PLAYERS CHOICE
26 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #12 – CASUAL CONNECTIONS
A veterinary examination of GENERAL SON following the incident revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg.
PLAYERS CHOICE (S. Richardson) was hampered at the start by TODLINE (G. Geran), which jumped in.
ZAHA ROYALE (J. Brown) began awkwardly.
Approaching the 900m APACHE CLOUD (R. Goltz) was momentarily tightened for room between BONTEENA (D. McMaster), which shifted in and away from TODLINE.
As the pace of the race steadied near the 800m both APACHE CLOUD and CASUAL CONNECTIONS (J. McKinnon) were forced to steady to avoid heels.
PLAYERS CHOICE brushed the running rail near the 400m.
ZAHA ROYALE hung out rounding the home turn.
In the early stages of the home straight PLAYERS CHOICE was inclined to lay in and away from CASUAL CONNECTIONS which was racing to its outside.
CARLSON'S TREASURE (N. Yamada) shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages of the event.
Following this event jockey S. Bogenhuber was examined by ambulance officers and cleared to fulfil her remaining engagements.
Race 4: MCCORMICK INDUSTRIES CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1300M
1st – Korgold 2nd – American Eagle 3rd – Run Away Ruby 4th – Eskervinth
Track temperature: 20 degrees Celsius
BALLARD BOY (S. Bogenhuber) was slow to begin.
A. Best (LENTINI MIST) dropped his whip near the 100m.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of KORGOLD, trainer P. Wallace stated that in his opinion the gelding was better suited dropping back in class tonight from its most recent start at Toowoomba on 25 April. Mr Wallace added that whilst the gelding's most recent form on the cushion track was a little disappointing, he advised that it generally races well on this surface. Mr Wallace further added that the gelding had worked well in preparation for tonight's event and he was not entirely surprised by the improved performance. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 5: GED COSGROVE MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1625M
1st – Macca's Express 2nd – Uncle Jan 3rd – Second Go 4th – Run Jake Run
Track temperature: 19 degrees Celsius
Trainer R. Hawkswell advised that it would be the intention to have ARTSECRETS (C. Eaton) ridden in a rearward position, however the rider will be instructed that if the horse commences to overrace she is to allow it to stride forward.
FAMOUS FORTUNE (R. Goltz) jumped out at the start and made contact with UNCLE JAN (G. Geran) which became unbalanced.
When asked to comment on the tactics adopted on BLOODHOUND, in particular the reason for it leading in tonight's event, which is in contrast to its regular pattern of racing back in the field, jockey N. Tomizawa advised that BLOODHOUND has a tendency to be slow to begin, however tonight jumped well. Jockey Tomizawa added that it was not his intention to assume the leading position, however BLOODHOUND commenced to hang out and race keenly rounding the turn at the 1300m and as such he was forced to have the gelding racing in a forward position. Jockey Tomizawa further added that the horse hung out for the majority of the event. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 6: K & R PLUMBING SUPPLIES CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1000M
1st – August Bishop 2nd – Top Of The Rock 3rd – Razor Gang 4th – Diamond Heist
Track temperature: 16 degrees Celsius
MISS KNIGHTMARE (C. Eaton) was tightened for room at the start between RAZOR GANG (J. Hoopert) and TOP OF THE ROCK (G. Goold), which jumped in. As a result, TOP OF THE ROCK became unbalanced and settled further back in the field than anticipated.
When asked to comment on the performance of TOP OF THE ROCK, apprentice G. Goold advised that the filly began awkwardly and shifted in at the start and as a result he was forced to straighten the filly and as a consequence lost some ground. He added that from this point he elected to ride the horse along in an endeavour to comply with the trainer's instructions to lead if possible. Apprentice Goold stated that at a point near the 700m he improved to the outside of DIAMOND HEIST (R. Goltz) and anticipated that jockey Goltz would go to the fence which would allow him to race outside the leader AUGUST BISHOP (K. Yoshida), however DIAMOND HEIST persisted to his inside and he was forced to race three wide from this point. Apprentice Goold further stated that the filly ran on fairly in the home straight, however when pressured with the whip for a short distance inside the 100m, in his opinion it failed to respond and he elected from this point to ride TOP OF THE ROCK out in a strong hands and heels fashion in the run to the finish. He further added that given the pressure he was forced to place on the horse in the early stages and also the fact that the horse raced wide for the majority of the event, the filly's run peaked near the 50m. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 7: HANNA'S TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN PLATE – 850M
1st – Mac's Addiction 2nd – Tingle 3rd – Sandy Illusion 4th – Roscity
Track temperature: 14 degrees Celsius
SUNDAY BONNET (J. Johnson) was slow to begin.
SANDY ILLUSION (R. Goltz) hung out for the majority of the event and rounding the home turn shifted wider on the track, forcing TINGLE (A. Best) and ROSCITY (N. Yamada) wider on the track. Stewards advised tainer S. Watkins that the gelding will be required to barrier trial prior to its next start. A post-race veterinary examination of SANDY ILLUSION revealed no abnormalities.
Approaching the winning post TINGLE laid in under pressure, resulting in SANDY ILLUSION having to be steadied to avoid that runner's heels.
