On Tuesday 1st September, Stewards and Dr. M. Lenz, Queensland Racing Limited veterinarian, conducted out of competition testing on a number of horses from various trainers in the Rockhampton area engaged to race at this meeting.
Race 1: Qld Training Solutions Pty Ltd Maiden Handicap – 1100 metres
1st – HOT ‘N’ BOTHERED 2nd – KALKIE MISS 3rd - LONG ROAD TO GLORY 4th – SHERBROOKE
THE COMMUNICATOR (M. Cant) began awkwardly.
MAKKA PAKKA (N. Patchett) and SLASBERG (N. Evans) were slow to begin.
When Jockey A. Pattillo was to be overweight, stewards accepted his explanation for his inability to make the weight and permitted him to ride HIS MOTHER’S SON half a kilogram above its declared weight when there was no other rider available.
Stewards opened an inquiry into an incident that occurred near the 700 metres which resulted in Jockey N. Evans being dislodged from SLASBERG. After considering the evidence of all riders involved in the incident, viewing the official video films and acting on their own observations, stewards were of the opinion that near the 700 metres SHERBROOKE (D. Green) shifted in marginally and brushed BUTTERFLY LOUNGE (D. Tanti), which shifted ground inwards, despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in MAKKA PAKKA (N. Patchett) shifting in abruptly away from BUTTERFLY LOUNGE and tightening the running of SLASBERG, which blundered and dislodged its rider. THE COMMUNICATOR (M. Cant) and HIS MOTHER’S SON (A. Pattillo) which were following were inconvenienced as a result and forced wider on the track. Stewards were satisfied that no one rider was responsible for the incident and took no action.
N. Evans was attended to by the race day ambulance officers and was cleared to continue riding.
Race 2: Best Doors QTIS 3YO Handicap- 1000 metres
1st - HEADHUNTER 2nd - DIABLE 3rd - HOMBRE WARRIOR 4th – MULE FORTY SIX
LUSSORIAN (D. Tanti) began awkwardly.
At the start HEADHUNTER (L. Dillon) shifted in and made contact with MULE FORTY SIX (A. Pattillo).
Near the 700 metres GOD’S WINDOW (T. Bannon) commenced to lay out, forcing GOLDEN QUALO (D. Simmons) wider. GOLDEN QUALO then raced wide for the remainder of the event.
Race 3: Thrifty Car Rental Maiden Handicap – 1300 metres
1st - FLASH ROMEO 2nd – WESTERN YORK 3rd - SESAME STREET 4th – BRAVE KALA
Trainer Mr D. Young was reprimanded under L.R.70 for failing to declare Jockey D. Tanti as the rider of TARVOS by the prescribed time.
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Jockey N. Patchett in relation to him being dually engaged on JAIMEE’S WAY and WESTERN YORK. A. Taylor was substituted as the rider of JAIMEE’S WAY.
At the start MY BEAUTY (App. J. Kropp) shifted in and made contact with JEN’S AGENDA (L. Dillon).
Shortly after the start JAIMEE’S WAY (App. A. Taylor) was tightened for room between BRAVE KALA (J. Stephens) and BUCHANAN BOY (M. Cant), which shifted in.
Approaching the home turn STIRLING GLANCE (T. Bannon) which had to be steadied to avoid the heels of the tiring MY BEAUTY (App. J. Kropp), shifted out and hampered JAIMEE’S WAY (App. A. Taylor) and SESAME STREET (D. Green).
For a major part of the straight, TARVOS (D. Tanti) was held up and unable to obtain clear running.
BUCHANAN BOY (M. Cant) and WESTERN YORK (N. Patchett) raced wide throughout.
Trainer J. Wiggington was reminded of his obligations under AR 117 (3) after JEN’S AGENDA was transported from the track prior to the ½ hr time requirement to remain on course post-race. Mr. Wiggington indicated that it would be his suggestion to connections to retire JEN’S AGENDA after the mare finished a distant last.
Race 4: Piranha Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd Class 1 Handicap- 1300 metres
1st – SEVENTEEN BLACK 2nd - PRANK CALLER 3rd - BELLARA GOLD 4th – BILLY THE MOUNTAIN
On jumping BILLY THE MOUNTAIN (N. Patchett) was tightened for room between BALLINDALLOCH (App. J. Kropp) and PULSIFY (App. A. Taylor), which began awkwardly and shifted out.
PREFERENCES (N. Evans) was slow to begin.
In the early stages, PRANK CALLER (L. Dillon) over-raced.
Approaching the 700 metres SEVENTEEN BLACK (A. Pattillo) shifted out to avoid the heels of BELLARA GOLD (D. Tanti), taking WANGARATTA WAHINE (T. Bannon) wider on the track.
When questioned about his riding of the fifth placegetter, BALLINDALLOCH, in the straight, Apprentice J. Kropp explained that the horse raced fiercely in the middle stages. He added that at the top of the straight he obtained a clear run and in his opinion his mount ran home fairly, however it was inclined to lay in over the final 100 metres. Stewards accepted that BALLINDALLOCH did race hard in the middle stages, however they reminded Apprentice Kropp of his obligation to ride his mounts so as not to leave his riding open to question.
A post race veterinary examination of PULSIFY revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. As this was PULSIFY’S second bleeding attack, connections were advised that the gelding would now incur a life ban from racing in Australia (AR53A). A swab sample was taken.
Race 5: Keel Bros Wholesale Distrubutors Class 3 Handicap- 1800 metres
1st - LA PIAZZA 2nd - RUN AND GUN 3rd - TOMKINS 4th – THE REHEARSAL
GOGGLER (L. Dillon) began awkwardly.
HARDLY A GAME (App. J. Kropp) began awkwardly and lost ground.
At the 700 metres GOGGLER (L. Dillon) was checked when tightened for room when racing to the inside of THE REHEARSAL (A. Pattillo), which shifted ground slightly before being corrected by its rider. Jockey A. Pattillo was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
When questioned about the seeming improved performance of LA PIAZZA, trainer Mr P. Brennan) stated that he believed that the addition of blinkers to the horse’s gear today and the fact that the horse was able to take up a more forward position in the race resulted in LA PIAZZA’s improved performance. He added there had been mitigating circumstances for the horse’s most recent runs, which led to the horse getting further back than had been anticipated. The stewards noted the explanation.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of GOGGLER, L. Dillon stated that in his opinion the gelding failed to run out the distance of today’s race. L. Dillon further added that he had suggested to connections that the horse would be more suited over shorter distances than today’s race.
Race 6 Aussie Tender Centre Class 2 Handicap- 1100 metres
1st - PROUD ZAHA 2nd - FALVEROSA 3rd - LARRY’S SONG 4th – DEXTRUS

Trainer Mr R. Walsh was fined $50 under A.R. 140A for presenting PROUD ZAHA (D. Simmons) in other than its correct gear.
ALL ROYAL (J. Stephens) was slow to begin.
At the 700 metres CLEAR CONSCIENCE (N. Evans), which began to over-race, shifted out and had to be steadied from the heels of GEOMAR (D. Tanti).
Jockey C. McIver, the rider of DEXTRUS, was cautioned under A.R. 137A (1) (4) (b) in that his whip hand was above the shoulder over the concluding stages.

When Jockey N. Evans became indisposed, M. Cant was substituted as the rider of ANDURIL and permitted to ride 1/2kg overweight.
At the 700 metres ANDURIL (M. Cant) hung out across the heels of WESTERN CHAT (D. Simmons) and had to be checked. ANDURIL has then continued to hang out and lose ground, and approaching the home turn again had to be checked from the heels of HATANGI (J. Stephens).
Over the final 150 metres LOOSE UNIT (A. Pattillo) laid in under pressure.
When questioned about the disappointing performance of WESTERN CHAT, Jockey D. Simmons explained that the horse had travelled well in the lead, however when placed under pressure on rounding the home turn the gelding failed to respond to his riding.
