Punter's Guide to Thoroughbred Tracks
What is your background in Queensland Racing?
I’ve been with horses all my life. I grew up on a big property out here when I was young and they used to breed thoroughbreds. I just went on from there. I had my first picnic race ride when I was about 15 and I’ve been training since I was 20, which was 40-odd years ago. I’ve trained in Mutuburra all my life and we’ve recently moved to Ilfracombe after I retired and have been battling a bit of illness.
Tell us about your operation? How many horses do you have in work and how many staff do you employ?
The wife mainly helps me and there’s a couple of stable hands that give me a hand now and then, but it’s mainly her and I most of the time. I have six in work at the moment.
What do you love about racing?
It is such a good interest and you meet lots of good people in it. I loved riding too.
Tell us about the horse you have qualified for the final?
Kakakenny – Career: 25-7:2:1
He’s a progressive horse but he’s had some trouble with his feet. We’re hoping he goes well down there but it’s going to be tough. On his day, he has a scintillating burst at the finish. The day he won in Longreach, that last furlong I couldn’t believe it!
What do you think of the Battle of the Bush concept and what it would mean to win?
It would make my life for me really. All these years I thought I’d never ever go to Brisbane with a horse. It would really just top my life off. It’s a dream. There’s a lot of people heading down from out in the country, a lot of interested followers and they cant wait to go either.
